Chronically Canadian: A Canadian Football Revival 11/30/01. A canadian football revival. Itsa minor miracle thatcanadian football as a professional game is still alive at all. http://www.pressrepublican.com/Archive/2001/11_2001/11302001pb.htm
Extractions: Peter Black - "Chronically Canadian" A Canadian football revival Credit Jeff Giles with coming up with a "catchy" ad campaign that cleverly combined testosterone and patriotism. "Our Balls Are Bigger" was the boastful slogan of the Canadian Football League in 1996, a year when it was do or die for professional football in the country. Giles was CFL commissioner at the time, but nowadays hes the president of the Toronto Argonauts, one of the few teams in the league still struggling to turn on fans and turn a profit in a sports-mad market. Giles has just written a book about his experience in the CFL head office called, "Bigger Balls: CFL & Overcoming the Canadian Inferiority Complex." Oddly enough, the book is hitting the stands just as Canadas deflated football ego has been pumped up to bursting by this weekends big Grey Cup bash at Montreals Olympic Stadium. If they would have peeled the roof off the Big Owe during the game (which had been the plan so many years past), the folks in upstate New York may have been treated to the mighty roar of 65,000-plus delighted fans. That near-record crowd the all-time high for a Grey Cup was in 1977, also at the Big O, the year after the Olympics was the kind of celebration the CFL needed to reassure itself that better days are ahead. That it happened in Montreal, where the success of the revived Alouettes has become a legend of the sports-business world, is all the better for CFL fans across the country.
