Product Description

Until a mere generation ago, black football players were largely unproven as quarterbacks since they were excluded from a position that demanded strategic thinking instead of brute force. So, talented players headed north, rising to stardom in Canada. John Danakas profiles the pioneering athletes who donned new team colours and changed their sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars black quarterbacks
Great read on how black QB's had to take the long road to play their position professionally

2-0 out of 5 stars Supposedly for kids, the whiny, left-wing liberal book waters down the CFL's great history...
William C. Rhoden, myslef and other authors have
tackled the subject of black QBs before and nei-
ther this author, nor Rhoden seem to present a
complete picture. Rhoden almost completely mis-
ses the CFL (and naturally, Arena Football), and
the Canadian author here, is very illiterate on
the NFL/USFL/Arena Football, the latter two of
these American leagues (and correctly the CFL)
have always been very fair to ALL QBs, let alone
just black ones.

Bernie Custis was just a very good athlete, more-so
than just a QB and was ALL-CFL at both QB and RB.
His career was very short because of a leg injury,
not prejudice. The problem with 'specially' books
like this Canadian entry on black QBs, which the
author has some sort of perverse fetish for, and
say, John W's book of the B.C. Lions is, both are
far leftists, who want to sensationalize the black
QB experience in the CFL to sell books. What do you
expect from frustrated Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans(?!),
who's fading franchise [no longer community owned!]
hasn't won a Grey Cup since 1990?

Product Description
North American football was born in Canada in the 1860s. For decades, though, the growth of Canadian football was slow to change from its rugby traditions. In recent decades, it has been in the shadow of its largest competitor, the National Football League. Although hockey is held up as Canada's number one sport, the CFL has enjoyed as rich and storied atradition in Canadian sports history. This book is not the usual general history detailing on-field accomplishments, Grey Cup winners etc. Instead, it combines an historical look through 2003 with discussion of continuous themes which have shaped the League. These include the role of the Canadian player, competition from other pro sports, the media's role in creating an image of the CFL, Canadians' attitudes towards pro sports, and how the CFL continually struggles to survive - often in spite of itself. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book on the CFL
First of all, Mr O'Brien's book is truly informative about the last couple of decades of the CFL's long history. Thus, if you are familiar with the league's early years, the text supplies an excellent (though sometimes "heavy" in details) history of the venerable Canadian institution. Quite a few questions and hypotheses about the social and national elements associated with the sport are offered always in an intelligent and well documented manner. It is unfortunate a prequel book (especially for the years following WWII up to Mr O'Brien's study) does not exist although the author includes a condensed history of the sport in the first chapters.

However, it would have been nice if a number of pictures had been included in the book. I suspect marketing/price reasons must have prevented the author to do so.

I highly recommend the book and hope that much more titles regarding the CFL would be available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't take it personally ... It's just business.

The book is designed to present a behind-the-scenes account
of the various peculiar business decisions made by the modern-era CFL ...
with particular attention given to the expansion experiment into the USA.

The CFL exists today
because of -- or in spite of --
these decisions.

If you're interested in delving into that sort of thing,
then this book is a very interesting read.

If you're looking for player stats and/or game highlights,
then this is probably not for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected For a CFL History
Being a collector of books on team histories, I bought this book expecting to see a year-by-year history of the CFL, team by team, along with many great photos. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. After browsing through this book and not finding what I was expecting, I returned the book for a prompt refund.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of the CFL
For those who want to know the history of football in Canada this book might be for you. It borrows from Frank Cosentino's two books ("Canadian Football: The Grey Cup Years" and "A Passing Game, A History of the CFL"). However, there is enough original research to make this book worth the buy. I heartily recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Aren't many books written about the CFL
As a previous reviwer mentioned this is somewhat of a hard book to read.I did not know that the CFL per se was not formed until 1958.I did not know that until the last couple of decades that all the western teams (smaller cities) except Vancouver were community owned teams.

I watched the Grey Cup growing up in the 60s on ABC Wide World of Sports.I remember the 1962 Grey Cup which was fogged out.It was between Winnipeg (Bud Grant's team) and Toronto.Through the years I've always followed the CFL whenever I could get it on cable.

For a football fan the first 6 or 7 chapters are the most interesting. There much emphasis on the American expanison in the mid-90s.The last six chapters or so would be enjoyed more by a Canadian, as it talks more about their culture.

Apparently there was a lot of mismanagement by the league & owners. The books provides a lot of recall about the promoters and charlatans who bought franchises in new sports leagues or expansions. They had balls, though more often than not very limited funds.

I visited Canada several times, but never picked up on the psychology of their citizens.Canada basically has an inferiority complex when thinking of itself compared to the U.S.The BoSox Yankee rivalry, as is most rivalries, is due to Bostonians self-perceived inferiority to New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely brilliant!
Not only does this capture a time (1945-70) when the CFL was great but it really shows how truly a special part of Canadian sports culture the CFL once was. Sure, the CFL has never gone away but in the days before cable TV and the NFL being beamed into every Canadian home, the CFL was all we had. Although I only experienced the period after this, it reminded me so much of stories my father used to tell of the greats--Jackie Parker, Normie Kwong, Sam Etcheverry, etc. It made the CFL's rich history really come alive and wish I could have been alive to see it all in its glory. ... Product Description
Normie Kwong's parents immigrated to Canada from China in the early 1900s. For them, and many other Asian immigrants, moving meant having to face both the government's anti-Asian policies and society's attitude of Chinese exclusion. But Normie overcame it all and, despite his small stature, in 1948 he became the youngest footballer ever to play in a Grey Cup game. Nicknamed the "China Clipper" as a nod to both his Chinese heritage and his record-setting speed on the football field, Kwong went on to become a hero and popular sports role model for generations of football fans in the West. After retiring from football, Kwong entered politics and was later appointed Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. [4.9] ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1995 Canadian Football League season is 87th in CFL history. Two more U.S.-based teams were admitted in the CFL with the Birmingham Barracudas and the Memphis Mad Dogs. In the off-season the Sacramento Gold Miners moved to San Antonio to become the San Antonio Texans. The Texans would play their home games at the Alamodome. In the previous season, the Las Vegas Posse, after a terrible inaugural season, ceased operations and folded. The Baltimore Football Club finally found themselves a new nickname and christened themselves the Stallions at the beginning of the second week of the season. With the admittance of Birmingham and Memphis, the CFL undertook a realignment; the league would now consist of a North and South Division rather than an East and West Division. All five U.S.-based teams would play in the South Division, while all eight Canadian teams would compete in the North Division. Five teams from the North division and three from the South would qualify for the playoffs. To make up for the disparity, the lowest-seeded North Division playoff team (which ended up being Winnipeg) played in the South Division playoffs. The city of Regina played host to the Grey Cup game for the first time. In the game, viewers at home and at Taylor Field witnessed the Baltimore Stallions defeat the Calgary Stampeders, 37-20, becoming the first (and as of now, the only) American...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2785676 ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been wwaayyyyy better. Leftist author brings production...
down quite a bit. Weirdo author sometimes attacks
Doug Flutie, by far the greatest player in CFL
history, and sometimes compliments him...strange.
Other leftist items in here that make you wonder
if the author is going through some kind of weird
crisis is the whining about how black cfl players
alledgedly 'suffered' so much. If that were true,
why did so many pour over the border to play in
this great league? The historical pieces about the
British Columbia Lions AS A TEAM, have obvious mer-
it, but the author should have kept his leftist
leanings and 'nambie-tambie' politics to himself
and this would have been a five-star CFL book. Oh
well - could have been a contender...

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike the Lions' history, this is simply brilliant
You have to love the amount of unreal research the author did. Also, the organization of the book flows as he basically focuses each "chapter" on a certain player, owner or other football topic. It could be a bit tighter but that's a moot point. He does tell it like it is/was and doesn't mince words. I can attest based on his observations of the brutal '70s that he is spot on on his take on that decade's characters.

Personally, any book on the CFLthat mentions Paul Brothers is worth its weight in ...well, not gold, if you know who Brothers was. I would have loved to read about Jim Evenson or Johnny Musso but those are pet faves. There is so much arcane but fascinating trivia packed in here, it is really a treasure trove of both sports and local Vancouver history from 1954.

What is pleasing is the author does not stop at the Lions and delves into local teams long gone in one section on the other sports teams in town. I would have loved to see a listing of Lions W-L and playoff records along with average attendance year to year just as reference points maybe in a glossary but again that's nitpicking.

Every Lions' fan should pick up a copy and there are hopes that the author may do a 50th anniversary update. ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1994 Canadian Football League season is considered to be the 41st season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 37th Canadian Football League season. The CFL admitted three more U.S.-based teams with the Las Vegas Posse, the Shreveport Pirates and the Baltimore Colts - making it 12 teams in total, six in each division. However, the Colts name was revoked from the Baltimore franchise due to a successful trademark infringement lawsuit, filed by the Indianapolis Colts, and played the entire season as the "Baltimore CFLers". The new teams would start play in 1994, with Las Vegas joining the Sacramento Gold Miners in the West Division and with Baltimore and Shreveport joining the East Division. In February, Bruce Firestone purchased the Ottawa Rough Riders from the Glieberman family. In May, the JLL Broadcast Group purchased the Toronto Argonauts. BC Place Stadium played host to the Grey Cup game on Sunday, November 27, making Vancouver the host city for the twelfth time-more than any other Western Canadian city. In the Grey Cup game, the hometown BC Lions were against the Baltimore CFLers, becoming the first ever Grey Cup game between a Canadian team and an American team. The Lions ended up defeating the Baltimore team by a score of 26-23, on Lui Passaglia's game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the game. Records: In a July 14, 1994 matchup of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos, Matt Dunigan passed for a remarkable 713 yards, setting a CFL record. Excerpt: A field goal in U.S. football and Canadian football is a goal that may be scored during general play ("from the field"). Execution of a field goal.A field goal may be scored by a placekick or the now very rare drop kick. The ball must pass "through the uprights", that is, over a crossbar that is 10 feet off the ground and between upright posts that are 18 feet 6 inches (5.64 m) apart, to count. Because a field goal is worth only three points, while a touchdown scores at least six (usually seven with the extra point), teams will generally only attempt a field goal in the following situations: Except in desperate situations, a team will generally attempt a field goal only when keeping a drive alive is unlikely, and their kicker has a significant chance of success, as a missed field goal results in a turnover at the spot of the kick (in the NFL) or at the line of scrimmage (in the NCAA). In high school, where a field goal that lands short is treated as a punt, most teams still opt not to attempt field goals from very long range, since field goal formations are not conducive to covering punts. Even under ideal conditions, the best kickers in the NFL have difficulty making kick...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8378967 ... Read more

Excerpt: NFL on NBC is the brand given to NBC Sports coverage of National Football League games until 1998, when NBC lost the NFL American Football Conference rights to CBS. NFL coverage returned to NBC on Sunday, August 6, 2006 under the title NBC Sunday Night Football, beginning its pre-season with coverage of the NFL Hall of Fame Game. The program (which has aired under numerous program titles and formats) actually goes back to the beginnings of NBC's relationship with the NFL in 1939, when they (technically, NBC's flagship station out of New York, which was then known as W2XBS) aired the first-ever televised pro football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the now defunct Brooklyn Dodgers football team. By 1955, NBC became the televised home to the NFL Championship Game, paying $100,000 to the league. The 1958 NFL Championship Game played at Yankee Stadium between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants went into sudden death overtime. This game, known since as the "Greatest Game Ever Played", was seen by many throughout the country and is credited with increasing the popularity of professional football in the late 1950s and early 1960s. From 1955-1963, NBC televised the NFL Championship Game, the precursor to the Super Bowl. The contract for the title game was separate than the regular season contract held by CBS, who started televising NFL game...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1942914 ... Read more

Excerpt: In the history of African Americans in the Canadian Football League (CFL), Black players and coaches received opportunities at a time when their counterparts in National Football League (NFL) still faced barriers. Prior to World War II African American athletes were barred from playing in major professional sports leagues. Although the NFL color barrier officially fell in 1946 quickly followed by the Baseball color line one year later when Jackie Robinson made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers these events were just the beginning of the struggles for African American athletes. Racial integration proceeded very slowly over the next two decades, and economists have shown that African Americans continued to suffer from various forms of discriminatory treatment. Beginning in 1946, a steady flow of African Americans began to migrate to the Canadian Football League which, at the time, was a legitimate competitor league to the NFL. In 1946, Montreal Alouettes GM Lew Hayman brought in Herb Trawick, making Trawick the first Black player in the CFL. Hayman, a New York City-born Jew, saw the way that Montealers had embraced Jackie Robinson with the Montreal Royals and believed the city was ready to accept a Black football player. In 1964, Tom Casey became the first Black player inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, three years before New York Giant Emlen Tunnell became the first black player in the NFL's Pro Football Hall of Fame. As Toronto Argonauts president in 1980, Heyman also hired Willie Wood as the first black head coach in the CFL. It was nine more years until Art Shell became the first black ...http://booksllc.net/?id=24414994 ... Read more
