    Extractions: by Marie Fraser, Genealogy/Newsletter Editor, Clan Fraser Society of Canada This article was inspired by CFSC member Duane Simpson of Surrey, BC who suggested that we profile a person associated with one of the Fraser septs, who had made a significant contribution to the early development of Canada. Sir George Simpson was the Hudson's Bay Company governor of Rupert's Land, and his cousin Thomas Simpson was a HBCo fur trader and the explorer credited with discovering the North West Passage. Sir George Simpson [c.1787-1860] Marjorie Wilkins Campbell wrote several books about the independent fur traders from Montreal, who banded together in 1779 to form a commercial empire that spanned the continent, before it merged with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. Simpson triumphed over the Nor'westers by employing a battlefield dictum followed by his idol, Napoleon: One must never interfere with the enemy while he is in the process of destroying himself Simpson’s ruthless treatment of Native women has been well documented. On 21st May 1821 he wrote to London from Fort Wedderburn: "Connubial alliances are the best security we can have of the goodwill of the Natives. I have therefore recommended the Gentlemen to form connections with the principal Families immediately upon their arrival, which is no difficult matter as the offer of their Wives & daughters is the first token of their Friendship & hospitality." Even before joining the HBCo, Simpson had already acknowledged two daughters born out of wedlock in Britain. [Isabella married James Cook Gordon, a Scottish solicitor, and Maria married Donald McTavish in Inverness.] Between his arrival in 1820 and his marriage in 1830, he had at least five other children by four women. Betsey Sinclair bore him a child but he soon tired of her. Margaret Taylor gave him two sons. He also had at least two other simultaneous affairs [and a child each] with Mary Keith, and with his Montreal mistress, Ann Foster. His sex-object attitude to women was largely responsible for the breakdown of marriage

The last member of the English school whom I need mention here is Thomas Simpson , who was born in Leicestershire on August 20, 1710, and died on May 14, 1761. His father was a weaver and he owed his education to his own efforts. His mathematical interests were first aroused by the solar eclipse which took place in 1724, and with the aid of a fortune-telling pedlar he mastered Cocker's Arithmetic and the elements of algebra. He then gave up his weaving and became an usher at a school, and by constant and laborious efforts improved his mathematical education, so that by 1735 he was able to solve several questions which had been recently proposed and which involved the infinitesimal calculus. He next moved to London, and in 1743 was appointed professor of mathematics at Woolwich, a post which he continued to occupy till his death. The works published by Simpson prove him to have been a man of extraordinary natural genius and extreme industry.     Extractions: Thomas Simpson is best remembered for his work on interpolation and numerical methods of integration. His first job was as a weaver. At this time he taught mathematics privately and from 1737 he began to write texts on mathematics. He also worked on probability theory and in 1740 published The Nature and Laws of Chance. Much of Simpson's work in this area was based on earlier work of De Moivre Simpson was the most distinguished of a group of itinerant lecturers who taught in the London coffee-houses. He worked on the Theory of Errors and aimed to prove that the arithmetic mean was better than a single observation. Simpson published the two volume work The Doctrine and Application of Fluxions in 1750. It contains work of Cotes . In 1754 he became editor of the Ladies Diary The following description of Simpson by Charles Hutton (made 35 years after Simpson's death) is interesting It has been said that Mr Simpson frequented low company, with whom he used to guzzle porter and gin: but it must be observed that the misconduct of his family put it out of his power to keep the company of gentlemen, as well as to procure better liquor.

I n a desert when there’s still far too little Farscape book material outside of non-canon novels, I end up buying these books when I see them. The main difference with this volume compared to the last two is this one has an 8 page colour insert showing some of the key cast and make-up effects. Other than that, it’s pretty much a mix of episode guide with interviews. There’s a chapter devoted to the animation episode - together with character designs - as well as the usual extensive look at the effects. A real tour de force for any Farscape fan. If you’re a fan, then you’ve probably got a copy by now, especially if you want a first edition. The earlier editions have gone into reprint a long while back. Some of my criticism from the previous volumes still stands. What’s the point of having an episode synopsis which doesn’t go right to the end? More so when you turn the page and there’s the start of the next episode. It’s hardly like it should spoil any surprises for any fan of the series.

Thomas Simpson is most famous for promulgating "Simpson's rule", which is a method of numerical approximation for a definite integral, and is often a student's first formal introduction to numerical analysis (found in Mathematical Dissertations ). Simpson, the son of a weaver, was self taught in mathematics. In 1736 he moved to London, worked as a weaver and taught mathematics in his spare time. By 1743, he was Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Academy at Woolwich. The exhibit has a variety of Simpson's books. The subjects covered include the figure of the earth, tides, astronomical refractions, extraction of roots, summation of series and "some new and very useful improvements in the inverse method of fluxions."
