Product Description
How much visual information is needed for image recognition? A pretty small quantity of data will go a long way for the brain and the computer, both of which take shortcuts for the sake of speedy comprehension. In the Jpegs series, German photographer Thomas Ruff exploits this imprecision in digital technology, locating online jpegs and enlarging them until the pixels emerge in a chessboard pattern of near abstraction. A closer look at these images reveals that, in addition to the degeneration of the image into a digital grid, the color and brightness generated by the algorithms of the compression also become visible. Many of Ruff's works in this series focus on idyllic, seemingly untouched landscapes, or conversely, on scenes of war and nature disturbed by human manipulation--subjects ill suited to disruptive pixelation, and therefore perfect for Ruff's purposes. Taken together, these images constitute an encyclopedic compendium of contemporary visual culture that also engages the history of landscape painting. A fittingly deluxe and oversize volume, Jpegs is the first monograph dedicated exclusively to this monumental series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
This is a very large and oversized book which helps add to the painterly qualities of these images. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed looking at these since I wasn't expecting much. The colors are vivid and these make you question whether you are looking at a photo or something else. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Page turner
This was a fun book to read. Kind of predictable, and could have omitted writing their full names all the time. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the storyline in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre At Best
When things are too good to be true, they almost always are and that is the premise of this rather unrealistic book. It starts out well and the story is strong for the first half of the book. The story centers around Gunn Henderson, an enormously successful salesman, who receives an excellent job offer with perks far beyond anything that he had ever expected. As with something this good, there are always many things that will be expected of him as well as sacrifices that will be made by his family. The story loses its momentum when the writer begins explaining the machinations as well as the motivations of the characters behind this elaborate charade. The story is so far fetched that it is laughable in many ways. It is somewhat like a poor B movie, at the sake of being impolite to the genre. Although this book is placed in the Suspense Category, it never really makes it. The characters are not well developed and it is difficult to comprehend one who is successful in his line of work making such a radical career move. All in all, this is fast harmless reading ehich, if taken as such, is passable escapism. It would be folly for the reader to for much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect crime
Since the first page till the end, this book has the perfect crime, "More know the devil for old than for devil", is the first book that I read that since the beginning is telling you part of the finish, that keeps you interested in the story all the time, and as I like from many writers, T.W. Simpson doesn't put Sam like a woman that doesn't know what to do and how to handle any particular situation, I like when the women can defend their selves alone or almost alone, and at the end you will see how to do a perfect crime... many times.

SIX STARS FOR THIS ONE

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
Typical story. Evil suburban man Good suburban woman. Every cliche of horror was used in this book.

This book is not worth reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars How Did This Guy Get Published?
For those of you expecting a thrilling, gripping novel, you will be thoroughly disappointed if you read this obscene, often boring, and absurd romp through amoral sex and the business world (which the author knows very little about, by the way). The characters are typical, though because Simpson is as untalented as he is perverted, he manages to make them ten times more boring than if they'd been modeled by someone else. For some reason, he believes he can make up for his lack of interesting content by repeating the full names of his characters and their alternates without cessation. This grows dull rather quickly, as does his writing style (if it could be called that), his plot (or the lack thereof), and the entire mess in general. If anyone has enjoyed this "book" (is it even?),I seriously question their ability to form any sort of opinion at all. If you haven't had the misfortune of reading this waste of paper and ink, then please don't make the mistake of doing so now. ... Read more

Product Description
A uniquely terrifying thriller that breaks all of the commandments...with a vengeance.

Not since Cain and Abel have there been two brothers like...The Hancock Boys.

What if two identical twin brothers decided to share a career, a family, a wife, a life? That is exactly what the Hancock boys decided to do. They took turns playing the role of the perfect husband, father, and bestselling novelist while the other lived out his wildest fantasies. It seemed the perfect setup. But what if one of them pushed the game too far? What if there was someone out there who knew their secret?

And, worst of all, what if one of the brothers suspected the other of teetering on the edge of sanity? The Hancock boys both know their game is coming to an end. And they have the perfect plan to protect their marriage, their skyrocketing career, and their very lives. The two men must become one. But which brother is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice? And with so much at stake, can either truly trust the other?

"Simpson has a terrific story to tell and plenty of talent to pull it off."

4-0 out of 5 stars You will know the end
The story of this two brothers is amazing. Nevertheless you'll know the end of it at half book and that makes you lose some interest in the book. It has too many coincidences but the book will keep you reading all the time. It has to many characters and that makes the book a little hard to read. The point that I didn't like it and at the end I did, was their wife, since the start of the book I had a question: how two men can do exactly the same to a woman in bed? And the second question was: how a woman can't feel the difference between two men in bed? You will see the answer at the middle of the book. One of the answers I won't tell you which is amazing and the other is that either John and Will are really stupid or their wife is.

4-0 out of 5 stars quick and entertaining...
A nice quick read that will hold your interest when you have time to kill. It took awhile to get used to all the character points-of-view but it all came together nicely in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good read!
This book was a really good book that I've read in a while. The plot is not difficult to follow and the book is really well written. This is the first book i've read by this author but I'm definitly going to read more books by him. You will not be disappointed when you read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complicated plot, but good read nonetheless
Simpson's book is probably too complicated for its own good, but this should stand as testament to his abilities as a writer. Never does the book become hard to follow. In fact, it reads quite quickly. I finished it in a day or two and have since ordered more books by the same author (as it is my understanding that previous outings are more literary). We'll ignore the implausibility of its subject matter. This book is quite a page-turner!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT READ!!!
This book - by FAR - has been the BEST I've read in a long, long time!I LOVED the way the author put the story together, by using 'flashbacks' here and there to get the story across and how certain characters met each other long ago, and things that happened to them long ago.The actually story itself takes place in a three day period...

This was a quick read, but also very riveting!I just did NOT want to put this book down. This one will definately be a keeper and will be read again!! ... Read more

Product Description

Making Murder takes readers deep into the work of Thomas Harris and his iconic creation, Hannibal Lecter—one of modern fiction's most unforgettable characters. A former crime reporter, Harris's exhaustive research techniques have included extensive time with the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit studying actual serial killers. Like no other available volume, the book explores the dark heart within Harris's novels—the unflinching look at evil that makes them so much more than just "good reads."

Making Murder looks at all five of Harris's novels, starting with the suspenseful terrorist thriller, Black Sunday, then moving through the quartet of books in which Hannibal Lecter gradually moves from malevolent presiding spirit to unsettling, recognizably human protagonist. Author Philip Simpson looks at the critical response each book received and explores the works themselves in terms of story, characters, writing style, allusions and symbols, and themes. An introductory chapter provides insights into the author's life, publishing history, and significant cultural impact.

Product Description
Paintings from more than forty years of work have been gathered for this first publication of Thomas T. Wilson’s work. His distinctive mark as a painter emerges from this juxtapostion of commissioned portraits, self-portraits, and landscapes.

Trained as an artist at the University of Illinois, Yale, and the University of Oregon, Wilson came to the Northwest to settle in Port Townsend, Washington, in 1960. In 1962, the year of the Seattle World's Fair, an exhibit of New York School painters brought the work of Motherwell, Johns, and Rauschenberg to local attention. A "Northwest School" of Tobey, Callahan, Graves, and Anderson had already been identified in a Life magazine article, and a new generation of local painters was developing.

Well aware of the art scene both locally and nationally, Wilson developed his own subject matter and style. He maintained the traditional concerns of a painter, but also saw the canvas as part of the work, and not just a window for an illusion. Looking through pages of the book, the reader will see a constant movement toward simpler and larger paintings.

Soon after Wilson’s move from Oregon to Port Townsend to live and work, he was discovered by discerning collectors. He brought a sympathetic eye to the Northwest landscape and climate, and his large paintings were a complement to the Northwest domestic architecture just then emerging. He painted portraits of his friends. They told their friends about Wilson, and soon he was painting people who wanted portraits congenial with their taste for modern abstract painting.

Post World’s Fair and pre-Microsoft Seattle was a time of significant cultural growth in all the arts--theatre, opera, dance, music, and architecture. Many of the people who were part of this growth sat for Tom Wilson and the portraits form a valuable record of Seattle’s recent history. Wilson has captured a society in the cultural world it helped create. ... Read more

If you are from Seattle it is a great reflection of his works. As family members we love to read about his history and review his works. This is a great book to read about an amazing painter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A special place.
I first met Tom Wilson when I was in college during the late sixties. I first heard about this book at a reception hosted by Anne Gould Hauberg three years ago (2006?).

This book is a gem. Maybe you need to study photographs of some of the people in Tom's portraits to get an idea. This is way better than John Singer Sargeant. Tom goes beyond what they look like and zeroes in to who they really are.

You should get this book. And he has some really great stuff on parts of trees. ... Read more

"Travellers Krakow" provides a detailed insight into one of Europe's emerging destinations, one of the real architectural gems of central Europe. Krakow was Poland's royal capital for five centuries and is now one of the nine European Cities of Culture. The art scene is the very soul of Krakow. Krakow's atmosphere is vibrant, alive and timeless. The highlights include: The great market square, the Rynek Glowny, is lined with bustling cafes and bars; the road winding south of the Rynek, ul Grodzka, is packed with shops and restaurants; the panorama of the city from the Zygmuntowska Tower is amazing. You can admire the grandiose memorial to Poland's 19th-century national poet Adam Mickiewicz. It also includes: The exquisite Romanesque church of St Wojciech, and the great Gothic tower of the old town hall; Sukiennice, a long, elegant cloth hall which, by day, is full of souvenir shops; upstairs is an art gallery. You can visit Krakow's Jewish district, Kazimierz, with its landmark buildings. The varied countryside offers several national parks which cover forests, rivers and rolling hills. This book has a great twists and tells the story of this mans life through a journal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor book, poor writer, poor Ellen
Well at first you will think that is an excellent book, I can't tell you why I finished the book it really doesn't worth it, nevertheless the finish of the book is excellent but you can imagine the end when you are at half of the book. The main story could be written in half of the pages of the book and when you reach the end you just can't believe that the police and all the people who lived with Adam didn't know what he did.
Poor Ellen and all the women that have to live like her.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good solid story!
If you are looking for a quick, enjoyable read and don't set mountain-high standards for your literature, you will enjoy this book. It's not cream-of-the-crop, but it's better than going and spending [...]to see this week's new awful flick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clever Disguise
The Editor is filled with lusty details, psycho-analysis, and dives right into the mind of Sam Adams, the narrative and "editor".Told in first person and written as one would write a journal, the story starts off slowly, giving the autobiography of the narrator. But it moves into another plot, as the story unfolds. The past is mixed with and affects the present. The editor/narrator jerks the reader along, painting one picture after another, one story after another. We get to understand his mind, his experiences, the pain he's suffered. But is that pain handed to him by the gods or is it self-inflicted. Do we have an objective account, the truth, or does he know that someone else is reading his diary? Should we really feel sorry for him, or mutter "tisk, tisk" at the game he is playing in his mind....and with you?Of course, this book is by Thomas William Simpson. And, just like his other books, he keeps us guessing to the end. This is another book well written by Mr. Simpson.
