Extractions: This book introduces its readers to the internet in small "bytes" using humor and simple, direct language. I am a non-techie who enjoyed it; and my early elementary-aged son loved it. I read some parts aloud to my husband (even less of a techie than I am) and we exchanged "aha's" with each other. All four of Art Wolinsky's books in the Internet Library series are winners. We are homeschoolers, and use these as our guide to computer science. Every other book we've tried on the subject assumed that you knew something about computers or computer jargon. It was very frustrating and even my son, who likes the computer, was becoming turned off to the subject. Then he found the Wolinsky books, and eagerly read them one after the other. Wolinsky assumes that you're reading his books because you want to learn about computers from the keyboard up. He gives clear examples, and even things to try on your own.

Extractions: This page last updated: 6th December 2002. ALAN BAKER: THE CAUSEWAY This is Alan Baker's first published collection. Taken individually, each poem might be found in any good poetry magazine; serious, intelligent, well-crafted work. One might single it out from among less well formed works in such magazines. A poem like THE HERMIT for instance (first two stanzas): Confronted with these twenty four poems - all of which invite praise - a reader may feel less than enthusiastic. Why? Well, in this collection, at least, there is no humour. The most serious poetry, in the hands of certain writers, can contain (and often does) a smile or two - even if they're merely wry. There are, of course, many poets who appeal to the general reader who don't use humour as a craft tool - Ted Hughes being one of them (in his adult poems, at least). What then does Ted Hughes have that Baker does not? - and I speak only of what I find in this first collection. What comes to mind, immediately, is passion - a hands on feel - that pulsates. pushes a poem along to its end. Baker distances himself too much from his subject. This is a writing personality that shows itself to be too earnest, too considered. A collection. however short, needs, not only a variety of subject matter (or varied approaches to the same subject) but a lightness of touch able to highlight the metaphor and imagery. A writer has to let up now and again. For me he is more successful when he uses rhyme - this from THE LOST WEEKENDS:

One of the reasons there are so few Alan Baker paintings in the marketplace is because their owners will not part with them. Another is due to Bakers incredibly high ethics in regard to producing a masterpiece with every work. Every so often he would clear out his studio and burn dozens of his works that he thought not to be good enough. He always said that when he died he did not want a studio full of rubbish getting onto the market. This is why we never see an average Alan Baker. Each work is of the highest of standard in keeping with the ethics of its creator. Bakers work is synonymous with refinement and quality. He is best remembered for his beautiful flower paintings poised against dark backgrounds. The inspiration for these works came from his very own planting of hundreds of camellias, azaleas, roses, native plants and cacti. In painting his floral arrangements he utilized the methods of the great masters of the past painting in good daylight from south to north and no reflected light and tone. He revolutionised the way artists after him approached their backgrounds. As he insisted backgrounds are considered a feature to help produce harmony of colour: -
