4-0 out of 5 stars Baker's Rabbit seies strikes again
While the Colors, shapes, alphabet Rabbit books are the best, I find most anything in Baker's loveable Rabbit series fascinating and a joy to show to children.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of These Things Isn't Like the Others.
In this addition to Baker's Rabbit series, Gray Rabbit is trying to find his favorite book. He can't find it because all of his stuff is messed up. So he sorts through everything arranging his things into piles where they belong. However, in each pile there is one item that is out of place. This oddball leads to Rabbit's next arrangement until finally he has gone through everything and found his book. Kids love Alan Baker's Rabbit books and with the brilliant colors, vivid shapes, and concept lessons that they help teach, parents will enjoy the books as well. Great book for preschool to kindergarten children.

Product Description
A riveting account of the fearsome Scandinavian warriors who terrorized Europe for three centuries

Following the success of his The Gladiator and The Knight, historian Alan Baker now turns to the Vikings, the seafaring raiders who murdered and plundered their way across Europe and beyond from the ninth to eleventh centuries, eventually getting as far as Newfoundland in the west and Baghdad in the east. Organized in thematic chapters, The Viking brings these formidable warriors to life, describing their pagan culture and traditions, their ships and seafaring prowess, their great kings and chieftains, and their discovery of North America. Filled with fascinating facts and gripping tales of battle, it’s a must for anyone intrigued by berserkers, battle axes, and long ships.

Alan Baker (UK) is a historian and the author of The Knight (0-471-25135-6) and The Gladiator. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Viking culture.
This is a decent book for someone who wants to get an insight not only to Viking culture, but of the people living in Scandinavia during the Viking era. There is a very nice balance of history and culture going on to paint a picture of what times were like during this time period. The one thing I would change about this book would be the section on Viking religion. It tends to be fairly long, and would only appeal to someone interested in theology in general. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, yet charming
White Rabbit's Color Book is a simple, yet charming presentation of the color wheel.A curious white rabbit finds three tubs of paint; red, yellow and blue. "Sunshine yellow, she thought.Lovely.A quick dip and . . . " the book continues. After yellow, orange, and red,my children were able to predict what was going to happen next. The end was a surprise to them, and they were eager to attempt making the color white rabbit found to be "just right."

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book
I brought this book home from the library for my daughter, who is almost 3, and we probably read it 7 times the first day it was at our house. (I immediately ordered our own copy)

This is a very lovely, simple story about a white rabbit who dips herself in tubs of paint. The rabbit is adorable and has a very innocent/inquisitive look about her. The tale includes a wonderful lesson on mixing paint colors. It is written simply so a preschooler can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers more than the basics.
I recommend it in my latest parenting book, "Kindergarten Simplified," for several reasons. It is an easy way to cover learning the primary colors (and more) prior to kindergarten screening, it introduces the concept of how we can manipulate our environment (scientific), and the story in general will encourage the joy of reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok for toddlers
This is the only rabbit book that my son is not quite crazy about. The storyline is great just that some of the drawings are kind of scary. My son refuses to look at the frogs and the snakes page and he would quickly flip to the next number every time we reach those two. It's an alright number book for toddlers. I prefer the other books in the rabbit series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy a Jell-O advertisement
A book about a rabbit that makes Jell-O (purple, yellow, green, and red, to be exact). Most pages of the story talk about Jell-O.Give me a break. Why would I ever read this to my kids? Why use my precious time with my kids to fill their minds with garbage about brand-name sugary junk?I threw the book away.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of a Story.
BROWN RABBIT'S DAY is the first book in Baker's rabbit books that I have read that is more of a story than a book used to teach a concept. I guess the book does illustrate the concept of time somewhat since in almost every scene, Brown Rabbit's alarm clock can be seen showing the passage of time. But, the clock really doesn't have anything to do with anything else in the story. Basically Brown Rabbit is having a party for his friends and he has to get everything set up. He makes some jello. Then his friends arrive. They play some games and then they go home. Then Brown Rabbit lays down and goes to sleep. End of story. Children will enjoy looking through this book, but since it doesn't really have any lesson or concept to teach, I find that the book isn't quite as good as some of the other ones in the series. But, it's still one children enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For this and all the rabbit books
I am a Developmental Specialist and do Early Intervention with children 0-3 who have delays and disabilities. Some of my older 2's on the Autism Spectrum really enjoyed Gray Rabbit's 1-2-3! for it's simple language and counting concepts. After each reading, one boy enjoyed looking at the other books on the back cover so much that I started collecting them.Changing books can be hard on some children who prefer the familiar only. With the Rabbit series I was able to bring in many more concept books and they were readiliy accepted by my toughest listeners.Plus, as an educator who has to read/work with the books over and over and over, I find them charming and adorable and I never get tired of seeing them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover Shapes With a Brown Bunny!
For a toddler's book about shapes, this book packs a lot! There are bright colors, a clever discovery story in which our rabbit hero finds packages inside packages, and words that are fun to say (e.g., "Whoosh" and "Curly-wurly").There's even some droll humor as Rabbit is described as "rabbit-shaped!"Along the way, kids will see examples of a rectangle, an oval, a circle, a square, as well as a tube and other interesting shapes. Nice bright colors and a warm, soft-looking bunny make this 21-page book a winner!

Product Description
Take "a lively, voyeuristic glimpse into the ancient world" of the gladiator (Publishers Weekly).

Condemned and yet feared by emperors, almost certain to be slaughtered and yet adored by the masses, the gladiator was the superstar of his day. His existence was invariably short and violent, improved only faintly by the prospect of honor, wealth, and public attention. Yet men gave up their freedom to become gladiators, noblewomen gave up their positions to elope with them, and Emperors risked death to fight them.

This thrilling popular history of ancient Rome's gladiators charts the evolution of the games; introduces us to the legendary fighters, trainers, and emperors who participated in the violent sport; and re-creates in gripping detail a day at the bloody games. Alan Baker reveals the techniques of the training school, then sets us ringside to witness the torturous battles between bulls, lions, jaguars, and battle-hardened human beings. With each breathtaking scene, the complex culture of world that created and adored these bloody games between man and beast comes into clear focus. A work of history that reads like fiction, The Gladiator brings to life Spartacus, Commodus, Caligula, and all of the other memorable players of the nearly thousand-year-long gladiatorial era. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Secret History?
As a Latin student in high school I knew most of what the author has to say about gladiators, so what kind of "Secret History" can this be?

I agree with previous reviewers that the writing, organization, and production of the book are poor.Much of the book rambles onto subjects that are related primarily by being Roman.

The chapter on a day at the circus starts with a gratuitous piece of sexual sadism and continues with gore, cruelty, and bloodlust.Lurid is too pale a term.

If you know nothing about gladiators and want to learn, find a different book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for young readers, bad for well-read ones
This book reads like an undergraduate's thesis. The prose isn't terrible, but it isn't enthralling, either. The book is broken up into 13 chapters, each chapter beginning with gigantic, bodled, ugly-looking Roman numerals that take up half of the page.

In the introduction lies this tidbit which I wish I knew before I bought the book: "Since this book is intended as a popular account of gladiatorial combats, rather than an academic or scholarly study, i have not included numbered footnotes in the text..." The author then states that there is a bibliography and suggested futher reading page in the back of the book for interested readers. The bibliopgraphy and suggested reading page is lumped together, meaning that it is impossible to figure out which books were used in the making of this text, and which sources are there as suggestions for further reading, and may not have been looked at by the author. Along with the 16 book sources are half a dozen websites...ugh. I dunno, I guess this is good for young readers looking for a fun history book. There are some good passages here and there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intimacy of the Fighters in Ancient Rome
Since I was in my teens, movie pictures like "Spartacus", "Demetrius the gladiator" and "Quo Vadis?" inspired me with an inextinguishable thirst to know facts about Gladiators & Roman Circus.

I was able to find more than one book about Spartacus and his revolt (notably Howard Fast's "Spartacus"), but on gladiator's everyday life, origins, evolution among other issues, I was unsuccessful. Worst of all, the recent movie "Gladiator", renew my interest.

Finally I found this book at Amazon's Store (where else?).
It is at the same time an oasis for my thirst and a let down in some aspects.

First the bright side: Mr. Baker has done a very interesting research and shows his findings in a very amenable way.
All the main issues are addressed: origin of gladiatorial institution, organization, evolution and extinction. Weaponry, different kinds of fights, ceremonies, circus emplacement and a glossary of terms are included. A vivid reconstruction of what Circus was like is done in the chapter "A day at the Circus" and some other interesting items about these ancient warriors are also addressed.

The shadowy side: the edition and typography of the book is poor, it looks as it was given to press in a hurry (trying to catch with film success?). Some side stories are well known, other are not directly related with the main object of the book. Bibliography is scarce and no reproductions are shown.

Balancing pros & cons the book is a fairly good read for anyone interested in this particular subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, entertaing and oft shockingintroduction to the subject
My reading of "The Gladiator" was begun with a mote of lowered expectations. However, after reading the preface where the author clearly outlines that this is not meant to be a flawless historical tome, one can sit back, read , and enjoy this entertaining, lurid, and oft informative piece.

The world of the gladiators is often glorified; its virtues extolled where little attention has been paid to the societal motivations, public melieu of the time that fostered the growth of these "munus". The public's view of gladitorial events is rife with dichotomy. On the one hand, adoration is showered upon the contestants/slaves/prisoners, yet on the other, they are scorned, and sentenced to the most horrific of ends. It is this clearly outlined duplicity that personified the Roman Republic's transformation to Empire. Cities were stripped of their freedom; the last being Rome once the famed Rubicon was crossed by Gaius Julius Caesar, individuals subjugated themselves to the will of the state, and a people's bloodlust was satisfied. Rome's supremacy over nature and foe was best exemplified within the confines of the ring. To die under such circumstances was met with fickle resolve, even honor.

Yes, this book is often perfunctory, and written with the novice in mind. But it is at the task of introducing a casual reader to the period that it excels. Precious few books that aim for loftier goals achieve them in such fashion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read
I picked this book up with a passing interest in the subject matter. My knowledge on gladiators was basically limited to viewing movies such as Spartacus and Gladiator. So, I was interested in gaining at least a little deeper insight into galdiatorial contests. On that note this book did not disappoint me. It was written in a style and manner that kept my attention and allowed to get a broad overview on the subject without getting bogged down in detail.

If you are looking for a serious scholarly work, then you may be a bit disappointed (at least that seems to be the concensus from reading a few of the other reviews). However, if you are looking for a general overview and easy read, then I think you will find yourself happy with this purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fields Medalist
My copy of this book is worn out. It's hard to explain it's charm, perhaps it's the way it covers so much ground so quickly and fluidly (without leaving everything as an exercise for the reader). A particular emphasis on quadratics: residues, forms, class field - not surprising since the author himself won the Fields Medal for his work binary quadratic forms in 1970 and previously in 1966 proved a long-standing conjecture of Carl Gauss: The only imaginary quadratic fields with unique factorization are d = -1, -2, -3, -7, -11, -19, -43, -67 and -163.
