Extractions: N O T E S As those who stayed awake in high school geometry class know, a Moebius Strip is a geometric loop with just one surface and one edge. It can be easily made with a strip of paper by twisting it once, then taping the ends together. The film premise is based on an idea by legendary French graphic novelist Jean "Moebius" Giraud, whose works are often favored by the Heavy Metal crowd. No stranger to Hollywood, Giraud has produced conceptual designs and storyboards for such sci-fi classics such as Tron, Alien, The Abyss, The Fifth Element, and Rendezvous with Rama. Bringing even more Hollywood firepower to the table is veteran screenwriter James Cox, a Disney pro whose credits include Fern Gully. Rounding out the team is Frank Foster, a former Senior VP at Sony Pictures, who is co-producing and directing the feature. In what is promised to be a brand-new premise not based on any of Giraud's books, the film is about a physicist named Simon Weir, who gets trapped in a space-time portal he created, so his son sets out looking for him, traveling by numerous planets with strange sights and giant, alien beings. Think of it as a Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale in a MYST setting. One hundred percent 3D, CGI animation started in March, 2001 in China, with a crew of 150 animators and a budget of $6 million. Giraud, who supervises the production from Paris, created 400 sketches as inspiration for the animation.

It is said that if the neutrino is massless (which now seems in doubt) then neutrinos only come in one handedness (I think "chirality" is the proper word). But is this really true? I was thinking about Mobius strips and non-orientable surfaces in general. I thought I heard someone say once that if the universe were a non-orientable surface, then it would be possible for an object to make a trip "around" the universe and thereby change its handedness. A right-hander could make the trip and become a lefty. So, I would think that a neutrino could make the trip and become a neutrino of opposite chirality. Am I right about this effect of travelling through a Mobius-like universe? If so, does that mean that the standard model is only consistent with a non-Mobius topology? Daryl McCullough CoGenTex, Inc. Extractions: Thru the Moebius Strip By Joe Fordham T o aficionados of the comic book and visual arts worlds, designer Jean Giraud Moebius needs little introduction. From his early comic strips for the French satirical magazine Hara-Kiri, through the creation of his Western hero Lieutenant Blueberry and the co-founding of Metal Hurlant magazine in 1975, Moebius became widely known for his elegant, highly detailed visual style and offbeat sense of humor. National Lampoon's Heavy Metal magazine, an American version of Metal Hurlant, brought Moebius' art to a wider stateside audience, particularly with his science fiction and fantasy stories Arzach and The Airtight Garage. Moebius became part of the design team involved with director Alejandro Jodorowsky's legendary attempted adaptation of Dune. The collapse of that legendary mid-'70s project led Moebius indirectly to a brief stint on Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), whose samurai-armored spacesuits bear a distinctly Moebius feel.
