Madison natives' road comedy film explores hockey obsession, growing up
By Rob Thomas
April 3, 2002 They accidentally left $50,000 worth of camera equipment by the side of the road. When the script called for a frigid Wisconsin winter, they got a balmy Indian summer. On the second day of shooting, the van carrying their principal actors crashed on the Beltline. Welcome to the world of independent filmmaking. But now comes the good part for the homegrown makers of the road comedy "No Sleep 'Til Madison," which was shot in and around town two years ago. They get to screen it for the first time before a sold-out audience Thursday, part of the opening-night events at this year's Wisconsin Film Festival. "The only people who have seen this movie are loved ones who are forced to say nice things about it," says Peter Rudy, a Madison native who co-wrote the film. "The fact that this movie sold out so quickly means there are going to be a lot of people who won't feel that obligation to be kind. It's going to be exciting to see a roomful of people reacting to our work." "No Sleep 'Til Madison" screens at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Orpheum Stage Door Theatre. While that screening is sold out, the movie could screen again Sunday if it wins a jury prize at the festival, and the filmmakers are hoping to schedule another local screening sometime down the road.

We have to start with the bus trip to South Bend. How about the bus driver getting pulled over an hour into the trip - nice job bussie. We get the pleasure of eating at the Home Town Buffet. Fletch ( Miguel Lafleche ) don't eat too much - you're already fat. Can't leave the Home Town Buffet without wishing a freshman happy birthday. This trip's birthday boy - Hot Rod (Pelley). "Happy 19th birthday to Ohio State forward Rod Pelley " was broadcast over the intercom.

The Spartans became a national power that season, when they won the 1966 NCAA Championship. This is the second installment in a four-part series looking at the history of MSU hockey. By CARRIE ELLETT
State News Sports Writer In 1950, a Michigan State College hockey team took the ice for the first time in almost 20 years. After being suspended in 1932, the sport was supposed to be reinstated in 1949. But Demonstration Hall was being transformed into an indoor rink with artificial ice, and the construction took longer than expected. So in 1950 the rink was finally completed and head coach Harold Paulsen began the task of building a competitive program for the Big Ten Conference.

W. Hockey Hits the Road
Weekend trip brings Red to Cambridge and Providence
By SARAH SPAIN
While the men's hockey team is battling Harvard and Brown in the friendly, fish-filled confines of Lynah Rink this weekend, the women icers will be facing those teams on the road. The games may not be as hyped on the women's side but the competition will be just as fierce the Crimson and the Bears boast two of the best records in the league.
After dropping two to ECAC powerhouse St. Lawrence last weekend, the Red (3-14 overall; 2-6 Ivy) will hit the ice tonight hoping to snap a five game losing streak. It won't be easy though, as both Harvard and Brown easily handled the women in November, handing them their first two losses of the season.
The Crimson (9-7-1 overall; 3-2-0 Ivy) is coming off a solid 7-2 exhibition win against Connecticut last weekend and sits at No. 12 in the National Pairwise Rankings. Last season saw Harvard qualify for the NCAA National Championship, but it lost two of the nation's top three scorers to graduation. With just two remaining seniors the team now depends on a strong class of juniors and one of the nation's top freshmen, Nicole Corriero. Corriero currently ranks fifth in the nation in points and third in goals scored. The Red will have to keep an eye on her as well as junior Kalen Ingram, who also sits in the nation's top 20 in scoring. Defensive intensity will be a huge factor in the game as well, as Harvard currently boasts the highest power play percentage in the nation.

Knights end hockey season with road win
C ICERO The Rome Free Academy hockey team ended a dreary season on a positive note on Friday night by defeating Cicero-North Syracuse, 3-2.
The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak and also ended a winless streak which had reached 12 games.
The Black Knights finished the season with a 2-11-1 Section III Division I record and wound up 4-19-1 overall.
"Definitely, it has been a long time since we've had a win," RFA coach Dave Petrelli said.
"It's a great thing to end the season on a positive."
Ryan Haley put the Black Knights ahead 1-0 at the 8:08 mark of the first period, scoring on the power play from Mark Barry.
After surrendering a second-period goal to the Northstars that tied the score at 1-1, Justin Marullo put RFA back on top at 5:43 with a goal assisted by Sean Barry.
In the third period, C-NS again rallied to tie the score at 2:20, but RFA answered back a minute later as Mark Barry scored the winning goal on the power play, assisted by Tom Wojdyla and Tom Sestito.
Matt Darois made 22 saves in goal to pick up the win for RFA.

Columnists Smizik: Hockey on road to financial ruin Thursday, July 04, 2002 Baseball has been spinning out of control for more than a decade, so no one should have been surprised this week when the New York Yankees felt the need to acquire an additional power hitter for their lineup, although they already led the American League in home runs by a wide margin. It will cost them about $13 million for 1 1/2 seasons of Raul Mondesi, a known attitude problem who is believed to be on the downside of his career. Not to be left behind, the National Hockey League which is in the early stages of spinning out of control and seems determined to outdo baseball's fiscal insanity opened its free-agency period with some stunning signings. Most notable was the $45 million paid to Bobby Holik, a very good but not nearly great player, by surprise, surprise the New York Rangers and $25 million paid by the Washington Capitals to former Penguin Robert Lang. Here's what we've learned from these transactions: *Money rules in baseball and hockey and New York teams have the most money.

The seven goals against match a season high for the Big Green and drop the team to 1-5 on the road. The loss also snaps a three-game win streak for Dartmouth, now 9-5 (5-3 ECAC).
In a wild second period that saw the two teams score six goals, the Knights took a 3-0 lead on a Randy Jones goal that caught a screened Big Green goalie Nick Boucher (12 saves) by surprise and beat him glove side.
Dartmouth came to life with a pair of goals in the next five minutes when Mike Murray tapped a Max Guimond feed out of the air and past a fallen Knight goalie Dustin Traylen.
Eric Przepiorka then fired a snap shot through a screen that beat Traylen high on the glove side for a 3-2 score. Pete Summerfelt and Murray assisted on the goal.
The Knights took a 2-0 first period lead on a pair of goals scored directly in front of the Dartmouth goal. Dave Reid chipped a loose rebound over the shoulder of Boucher for a one-goal lead at the 10:00 mark of the period and then Chris Bahen scored with just 55 seconds remaining in the stanza.
The Big Green returns to action on Saturday, January 11, against St. Lawrence for a 7 p.m. start.

In life, love and hockey, it's the little things that count.
The Princeton men's hockey team has made huge strides on both ends of the ice since the beginning of the season. Now, as they head into the season's stretch run, the Tigers will have to focus on the details of the game if they want to make a run in the playoffs.
Last weekend, Princeton (7-15-1 overall, 6-9-1 Eastern College Athletic Conference) played strong, discliplined and aggressive hockey, but came out of the weekend with only one point, losing 5-1 to Cornell on Friday and skating to a 3-3 deadlock with Colgate on Saturday. Friday's matchup with the Big Red (17-5-1, 13-2-1) was marked by tough bounces and missed opportunities. Just three minutes into the game, sophomore forward Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer took a pass from senior forward Brad Parsons and let a slapshot go. The puck beat Cornell goalie Matt Underhill only to deflect off the post into the corner. Cornell took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, as the Tigers were held scoreless despite putting ten shots on net. The score was 3-0 before Princeton finally got on the board with seven minutes, 28 seconds left in the second period. Senior forward Josh Roberts tallied the Tigers' lone goal, as Parsons and senior defender David Schneider picked up assists.
