5-0 out of 5 stars a different aspect

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book about an amzing team.
This book is wonderful! It gives all young athletes, like mysefl, hope for the future.Plus, this is a team that deserved to have their story told, and Mary Turco did a wonderful job at telling it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crashing the Net, my all-time favorite
Crashing the net is my all-time favorite book. This is a well written book that makes you feel that your really there standing beside K.L. or Cammi. It shows you the glory of being an Olympian and one day I want to try to play womens hockey in the Olympics. This book is one of the things that persuaded me! This book shows that anything is possible when you believe in yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book

3-0 out of 5 stars She Shoots.....She Scores!
Mary Turco captures the excitement that surrounded the first U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team.Unfortunately, the text wasn't quite as excited.Although the stories were interesting, they were dryly written. It washard to get behind these remarkable athletes as there just didn't seem tobe enough character developement. These wonderful gold-medal winners allhad to fight the prejudices against women's sports to follow their dreamsand serve as inspiration, but this aspect was barely touched upon.Thespirit of the 1998 U.S. Women's Hockey Team and their amazing journey wasnicely remembered and portrayed, but you will not find much of anythingelse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just like being there
Gary Mason does an outstanding job of making the reader feel like he is right there with the NHL "old-timers".Mason gives brief recaps of some of the careers of the ex-players, while also giving current stories of touring with the group. The players are colorful, poignant and interesting.Mason really gets the most out of them, balancing the old and new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Touuching - A Great Sports Book!
This is an undiscovered gem, not only a great hockey book but a very human book filled with laughter, sentimentality and even a little sadness. It's a great read......period.

It's the behind-the-scenes story of the 2001 Legendary Heroes Of Hockey trip across Canada.Gary Mason is a newspaper writer who accompanied this tour on two of its four week-long sessions. In the book, he talks about the games and strange little towns the tour visits.Mostly, though, he relates what these "old-timers" do best: tell great stories.

In this book, you get a bunch of fantastic lockerroom stories the players loved to tell and you get honest portraits of some of these great hockey players, from the controversial outgoing Tiger Williams, to the reclusive Marcel Dionne. Also Wayne Babych,Gary Nylund, Bobby Hull,Paul Reinhart, Jimmy Mann, Johnny Bower, Darryl Sittler, Gilbert Perreault and others spin yarns, sing songs, pull gags, pour down the beer and......yes, show they can still play great hockey in their "old" age.

All of the players reveal sides to them you may not know. All of them are articulate, funny, reflective men - a far cry from the semi-illiterate, goon-image many people may unfairly have of hockey players. They are the opposite, as Mason illustrates here in this extremely entertaining book. You'll have a new respect for NHL players.

These players are a dwindling breed: former pro stars who play mainly for the love of the sport and want to give something back to the fans who not only remember them but still revere them across Canada. These players didn't wear helmets and masks in their day and so their faces are as familiar to Canadians as baseball stars are to Americans. From small rinks in the middle of nowhere to big arenas, Mason makes us feel we are tagging along with the gang, enjoying the good times. There are tons of pranks (players just love pulling `em) and just good-natured camaraderie along the way. In the end, though, I found this a very touching book.

This is one of those rare books that made me sad when it was over.I hope Mason does this again with a couple of other groups because this was excellent reporting and reading. It's a very quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read
A very nice book on the little told world of oldtimer hockey tours.
There is one scene in the book, where the oldtimers play a gag on an unsuspecting rock singer on one of the teams that night, that is hysterical.
Overall, very worthwhile for hard-core hockey fans. ... Read more

Product Description
When the 2004-2005 NHL lockout was realized, Sweden, Russia, Switzerland, Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany eagerly absorbed foreigners and locals alike, as out-of-work NHLers looked to keep their game sharp and give back to the communities that taught them to play. Little did they know how much of the experience would prepare them for the "new" NHL.

Join them on this ultimate hockey road trip through Europe in the locker rooms, on the ice and in the streets. Sit behind Jaromir Jagr's mother in Kladno. Admire the Alps with Joe Thornton and Rick Nash. Walk through a pine forest to Peter Forsberg's childhood rink. Debate with Russian police at the Dynamo arena to meet Alexander Ovechkin before he became an NHL star.

And experience all the adventures of dozens of NHLers like Danny Briere, Martin St. Louis, Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexei Yashin, Mike Knuble, Henrik Lundqvist, Zdeno Chara, Daniel Alfredsson, Saku Koivu, Miroslav Satan, Martin Brodeur, Sergei Fedorov and Dominic Hasek.

The pain of lost dreams from a canceled season may be turned aside, but these experiences will never be forgotten. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book
This book is what it is: a fun, readable account of the European leagues during the NHL lockout.

The author certainly did a lot of work in putting this book together, and it shows. She includes lots of good interviews from lots of different places.I was particularly impressed by the chapter on Switzerland; the Swiss leagues are overlooked far too often in North America. It's equally impressive that she checked out hockey in non-traditional countries like Hungary, Belgium, and Norway.

Unfortunately, the editors here didn't do such a good job. There are typos galore, and the book's organization could be better (the "sex scandal" during the Sweden Hockey Games is mentioned at least twice, long before it is finally explained on page 134).Also, I feel like some things (eg. promotion and relegation, import rules, etc.) are, at times, dumbed-down for an audience that presumably doesn't know much about the politics of European hockey, while at other times it is presumed that the reader already understands certain concepts.

If you're an American with an interest in European club hockey, it seems like this is something you really should read.Otherwise, you can skip it.It was fun, but it could have been a lot better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirks of Euro Hockey
How do fans show their spirit in Europe?Which countries have hockey cheerleaders? Why do some players wear a yellow uniform during games? If you don't know the answers to these questions, this book is for you.The author attends games all over Europe and shares her unique experiences and observations about the Euro hockey infrastructure. She manages to interview many of your favorite players who chat about themselves, hockey and the NHL. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars What atrip !
This is a fabulous find - a 'road book' that appeals to hockey fans, travelers, and anyone who simply enjoys a good read.Ms. Sullivan's account of her criss-crossing of Europe duringthe
hockey lockout is humorous, knowledgeable, and very interesting.
We meet the stars of the NHL as real men, whose conversations and
opinions may surprise their fans. Still, you don't have to be a
hockey fanatic to love reading this book ! ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Street hockey (also known as road hockey, deck hockey, ground hockey, easy hockey, cosom hockey or ball hockey) is a type of hockey played on foot, without skates, usually on an outdoor surface (very often a street, parking lot, or other asphalt surface). It usually involves no contact and fairly small amount of gear to be worn. Depends on a persons preference to use certain gear like shin pads and such. Street hockey is most popular in Canada and parts of the northern United States. For example, it can be seen at outdoor roller rinks, city parks, and playgrounds of Montreal, New York City, Toronto, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Vancouver. The United States term street hockey is more closely related to that of the Canadian terms dek hockey or ball hockey. In Atlantic Canada, the sport is also often referred to as street hockey. Street hockey can also refer to roller hockey, when inline skates are worn to play otherwise the same game. ... Read more

Road Games is a passionate, engrossing and authoritative chronicle of the extraordinary 1992-93 NHL season, one that ended with an inquiry into whether or not the Ottawa Senators deliverately "tanked it" to secure their first overall draft pick of hockey's newest sensation, Alexandre Daigle. This was the season that Mario Lemieux's involvement in a sordid scandal was forgotten when he overcame cancer to win the scoring title; Doug Gilmour emerged as one of the game's finest players; and European stars Selanne, Bure, Mogilny and Fedorov rose to preeminence, while the North American hockey heroes-Gretzky, Lemieux, and Lindros-endured a season marked by injury, sickness, disturbing controversy and moving comeback. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Simply put: The worst hockey book ever written
How this book got written is BEYOND ME.It was boring. It was written by a radio guy.It gets into the monotonous details of NOTHING.You wanna go on the road with a hockey team? Who cares what the author saw at the movies between the morning skate and game time! What we want to know is what go-go bars they were in and why! We want people. We want dirt.Yeah, that's what happens on the road in pro sports...but he didn't have the guts to break the old credo of "What happens on the road stays on the road." Think of this as a black-lined secret government document for sports.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected
In the rough and tumble world of hockey what Berger produces is a fluff piece. I wanted to know what life was like on the road for an NHL team during a season but all i got from it was Berger's panoramic views from the window seat in the airplane. Who gives a crap what the city skyline was like? Instead of offering us a hard hitting account, he offers us with buddy buddy schmoozing with a couple hockey players and the coach. It was obvious that the players didn't want him around. Hardly ever did Berger give us accounts of him being with the players hangining out after the game or on days off. The closest thing to it was talking with Doug Gilmour on the street but he left in a hurry to go see his momma.(I thought he was supposed to detail the players and the team not his momma.) If i was going to request access to cover a team, i would lay down what i wanted to accomplish for the book and if i couldn't come to an agreement with the team, then i wouldn't produce a fluff piece just to let the world know i was around some hockey players. If Berger's goal was to remain buddies with the players and management, then what he should of done was chronicle another team not so close to his heart.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste (or waist) of time
My title says it all. There were so many spelling mistakes and/or typos (including the one above in the bio of Tie Domi) that I gave up half way through the book.If the author and/or the publisher couldn't bother toproduce a quality book I couldn't be bothered finishing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
Perhaps the most incredibly inane hockey book ever written

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is BEYOND brutal!
This is what happens when a radio reporter tries to write. Never have I read a more boring book in my life. Here's some typical portions from the book: "I got up. I ate breakfast and read the newspaper. There was astory about so-and-so. Then I went to the rink for practice. I talked toso-and-so about the game that night. Then I went back to the hotel. I wasbored, so I went to a movie. When the movie was over, I went back to myroom, grabbed my things and went to the rink." It goes on and on likethat.Really, folks, give this subject to someone who can actually WRITEand tells you about all the drinking and #$%@?! that goes with hockeypeople when they travel AND THEN you will have a book! I covered the NHLfor a long time. I know of what I speak. ... Read more

Product Description
Veteran sports journalist Howard Berger spent five seasons traveling with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. In l995, he wrote the very popular book, "On The Road: An Inside View of Life with an NHL Team." Since then, Berger has maintained the grueling schedule of a journalist covering a professional sports franchise, and has witnessed first hand many behind-the-scenes dramas, with access to and familiarity with all of the players, coaches and management of the Toronto Maple Leafs as well as their NHL opponents.

This new book records enormous changes with this team, led by the charismatic enforcer, Tie Domi, and the Swedish superstar, Mats Sundin. The new cast of characters includes goaltending sensation Curtis "Cujo" Joseph, brawling head coach Pat Quinn, and hockey legend Key Dryden as general manager and team president - as well as a fascinating group of veterans and wide-eyed rookies.

During the 1998-99 season the team switched from the NHL's Western Conference to the Eastern, reintroducing them to historic rivalries with Montreal, Boston and New York as well as increasing the frequency in which they compete against teams like the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers.

Howard Berger is a seasoned hockey journalist from Toronto. ... Read more
