    Flags on helmets
All the CFL (Canadian Football League) teams receive funding from Ottawa to stick a maple leaf on the back of the helmet - I wonder if the Baltimore team did the year it was in the CFL.
Rob Raeside, 1 February 2001 While I cannot answer for the Baltimore team, but the Sacramento Gold Miners and the Las Vegas Posse (yes, there were more US Canadian Football League teams than Baltimore) had the maple leaf on their helmets and commercial sports gear (t-shirts and the like) and flew the Canadian flag at games. The flying of the Canadian flag may have been because most of the opponents were from Canada, I never saw a game between two US teams.
Michael P. Smuda, 1 February 2001 The flags on the helmets were not simply decorative. Only players of Canadian citizenship were allowed to have the Maple Leaf sticker on their helmets. This came into play with the "Canadian content" rules of the game, which stated that teams had to have a certain number of Canadians on the roster, and of those, a certain number had to be in play at any given moment. The U.S. teams (Baltimore, Las Vegas, Birmingham, San Antonio, Memphis, and Sacramento) were not subject to those restrictions as it would have been counter to U.S. labor laws, and I do not recall seeing maple leaves on their helmets.

Cultural Landmarks of Hamilton-Wentworth Canadian Football Hall of Fame Location: 58 Jackson St. West, Hamilton, Ontario In 1962, the City of Hamilton under Mayor Lloyd D. Jackson 's direction petitioned the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the privilege of housing the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. After Mayor Jackson 's successful presentation, the CFL awarded the city the right to build the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Since there was no building to store the CFL's memorabilia, the Hamilton Parks Board made an old residence near the Civic Stadium, now known as Ivor Wynne Stadium temporarily available. The items were displayed for the public until a few months later, when the Parks Board informed the CFL the building had been sold to the Hamilton Board of Education for the construction of a new secondary school. Therefore, a new building to store the historic football memorabilia needed to be found. After 1962, many proposals were presented suggesting the final location of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Seven years later, the City of Hamilton and the CFL decided to use the land beside City Hall and the Hamilton Public Library on Main Street West in downtown Hamilton. There were many obstacles to building on the site. The first of many problems was that the land actually belonged to the

    Canadian football
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Canadian Football is a form of football in which two teams of twelve players each compete for territorial control of a field of play 110 yards long and 65 yards wide. Teams advance across the field through the execution of short, distinct plays, which involve the possession of an oblate spheroid ball (a direct descendant of a size 3 rugby ball). Players advance the ball by carrying it in the arms or passing it to another player (only one forward pass permitted per football play). Three attempts, or downs, are allowed to move forwards ten yards, or the team with the ball must relinquish it to the other team. Canadian football is played at several levels in Canada. The professional league in which the sport is played is the nine-team

    Canadian Football
I am grateful to Mike Slater for providing the following information:- It would be correct (and proper) to include Canadian Football as a derivative of Rugby Football . It is played each year for the Grey Cup (note the spelling of 'grey' - not the American version, 'gray') It is taken from Earl Grey (of the tea family) who provided and inscribed the Championship Cup for Rugby Football to Canada. On the surface it is the same as American gridiron football and when I first saw the game I took it to be a rural version of American Football - not quite the league of the NFL. However there are differences - one more player (twelve as opposed to eleven) on the field which is 10 yards longer, and there are only three 'downs' to progress 10 yards (as opposed to four in the US version). In the NFL a rush of 3 yards will just about get you to the first down in 3 plays, then you have the 4th down to either punt or run the ball if your team is just short of the first down. Some teams play the game on the ground, grinding out 3-4 yard advances. Not so in the CFL - there are 2 downs to get 10 yards and then punt or play on the third. Fewer players and a larger field means more space - the game is faster, lots of passing and a much more open game. Canadian football is a distinct derivative of Rugby Football and a much superior version when compared with the American Gridiron.
