Recreation and Leisure Studies
Department web site The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies presents an integrated approach toward this academic field as a response to the growing importance of leisure and recreation in personal lives and communities. The theoretical curriculum of leisure studies challenges students to understand the meaning of leisure in our culture as impacted by sociological, psychological, theological, historical, philosophical and economic influences. This foundational multi-disciplinary approach is integrated within the recreation curriculum to prepare students to plan, organize and lead recreation programs in myriad settings. Because of the diversity of recreational services, students are encouraged to double major or declare a minor which will complement their interests. There are many professional opportunities directly related to leisure and recreational services. Gordon’s recreation and leisure studies graduates have successfully entered the recreation profession and have progressed in their leadership roles as well as pursued graduate degrees. Professional possibilities include: community recreation, YMCA, after-school recreation programs, corporate recreation, resort and commercial recreation, camps, therapeutic recreation, recreation for special populations, and outdoor adventure programs. The department also has a very active and diverse internship/cooperative education placement program which transitions students from the classroom to the work environment.

http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~dsuarez/physeduc/reclgen_develop.htm
Choosing your topic
Depending on the course you will have to choose a topic. This can be as easy as getting interested in a specific recreation topic through reading an article, watching a television documentary, or observing a recreation related behaviour in person.
You will need to become familiar with some classic studies on your topic. This background research can be gained by reading your textbooks, required course readings, and by consulting library Reference sources. Pay particular attention to studies dealing with principles, theories, hypotheses, and models as well as typical research methodologies used with your topic. Stating your questions
Once you have sufficient knowledge of the background research on your topic you will be ready to ask some investigative questions. A research statement should now be formulated. This should be brief, to the point, and must identify the variables used in your study if applicable. Refining your topic
After you have stated your research problem you must then present your hypothesis, or expected results based on some theoretical construct and/or the results of previous studies. This process is not strictly linear, following exact steps, but rather integrated with your initial library research. Starting with general questions and consulting encyclopedias and textbooks, for example, your ideas will gradually take shape.
