POST-CLASSICAL SCIENCE: AN OVERVIEW
I. Alexandrian-Hellenistic Science A. The Museum of Alexandria and the institutionalization of knowledge. Center of Classical research which provided the beginnings of institutional science. Emphasis placed on scholarship and textual criticism. Strong neo-platonic bent (that is, more mystical interpretation of Plato) Important scientific thinkers. a. Ptolemy: synthesis of mathematical-observational astronomy. b. Diophantus: development of algebra. c. Galen: medical thought, anatomy, physiology. II. Roman Science A. A rather superfical record-keeping encyclopedic tradition (pliny, Seneca, Boethius, Varro, etc.). B. A dilettantish approach to Greek science among the elite, typified by handbooks dealing only with the product of Greek inquiry; emphasis on rhetoric. C. Lack of origional scientific-philosophic though. D. Some translations to Latin of Greek mathematics and Aristotelian metaphysics (Boethius). E. Emphesis was on technology: aquaducts, water wheel (Vitruvius), military applications, agriculture. F. Apparently no conscious decision to apply scientific thought and knowledge to social problems accompanied this technology.

native simplicity of feeling which sometimes reminds the reader of Homer.” Most readers will probably adopt a view between these extremes. Bradshaw expresses the humblest opinion of his own abilities, and he certainly had no delicate ear for rhythm. His sincerity is abundantly evident, and his piety is admitted even by John Bale,i hostile as he was to monkish writers. W. Herbert2 thought that a Lyfe of Saynt Radegunde, also printed by Pynson, was certainly by Bradshaw. The only ‘extant copy is in the Britwell library. Pynson’s edition of the Holy Lyfe is very rare, only five copies being known,. A reprint copying the original type was edited by Mr.Edward Hawkins for the Chetham Society in 2848, and by Dr Carl Hortsmann for the Early English Text Society in 1887. An excellent Memoir of Henry l3radshaw, by Mr G. W. Prothero, appeared in 1888. See also C. F. Newcombe, Some Aspects of the Work of Henry l3radshaw (‘905). i Scriptorum Illustrium, cant. ix. In 1339 he was again in his bishopric. Thereafter his name occurs often among those appointed to treat of peace with Philip of France, and with Bruce of Scotland. It appears that he was not in Parliament in 1344. Wasted by long sicknesslonga infirmitate decoctuson the 14th of April, 1345, Richard de Bury died at Auckland, and was buried in Durham Cathedral. Abstract Is Jesus the Son of God despite his Incarnation ? On the answer depends, according to s. Basilius, the interpretation of the Nicene Creed (325) : either the council would make a compromise with paganism, or it collects the most extraordinary part of Christian faith. In order to show how the Scripture prescribes to see God superabundant when He enters into an alliance with man, the bishop of Caesarea resumes the Origenian problem of the names of Christ. Abstract In Boethius, philosophy, in the classic sense of love of wisdom striving towards the contemplation of God, gives rise to three disparate attitudes : the first is philanthropy, the second is marked by a contraction of the preceding impulse, and the third carries out a radicalization. What governs such an evolution is perhaps a turn of epistemologic character, when Boethius, being no more transmitter of Greek knowledge, is dealing with the divine rather than with what sets us on the way towards Him.
