Quebec (keh-BEHK) is Canada's oldest city, founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Its name was an adaptation of the Algonquian word meaning "the river narrows here"Champlain chose this spot for the settlement because the high cliffs and narrowing of the St. Lawrence River offered excellent natural and strategic defences.
Couriers de bois
At one point, King Louis XIV had French women sent to New France as wives for the men who inhabited the fledging settlement. These filles de roi
In the 18th century, the city of Quebec finally began to grow. With a larger population, industry and trade flourished. Couriers de bois continued to bring pelts and furs into the marketplace to trade for other goods which they could take back into the wilderness. Stores and workshops were built on the river's edge in the Lower Town.

History of the CFS in Quebec
The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1999. With one hundred years of experience in developing Canadian forest resources, the CFS has become a major player in the national and international forestry community. The text that follows outlines the history of the organization's involvement in Quebec, provides a brief sketch of its activities in the province and describes some of its employees' main achievements. We do not intend to provide an exhaustive list of the accomplishments that have allowed the CFS to be a major forestry stakeholder, but rather to give a glimpse of some of the most significant ones. EARLY HISTORY The story of forestry research at the CFS began in , when the Canadian government created the Forestry Branch of the Department of the Interior, which would later give rise to the Canadian Forest Service. The branch was mandated to carry out forestry research in the strict sense, while research in entomology and pathology was assigned to the Forest Biology Section of the federal Department of Agriculture.

King of the North
An important figure in Quebec's history at the time the Laurentians was colonized: was Father Antoine Labelle, nicknamed "King of the North". In 1840, the dispute between land lords was at its worst, causing many of the younger generation to flee towards the United States. It was at this time that Father Labelle canoed up the North River to seize Pays-d'en-Haut, the north of the Laurentians, believed by his people to be the promised land. We credit Father Labelle for the founding of the "Ptit Train du Nord" of which, since 1909, has permitted stronger economic ties between once isolated communities and Montreal, and today is a scenic 200km bike trail.

In Smith 1975 (FTTAAATW) [Smith 75b] , there is a blue ensign pictured with the former arms of Quebec. In Gordon (Gordon, W. If not, which one would be correct?
Luc-Vartan Baronian - 22 January 1998 Gordon is correct. The Canadian provincial badges, including Quebec, were each included within a white disc on the blue ensigns. I presume that you are referring to the illustration on pages 186-187 of Smiths' FTTAAATW [Smith 75b] which show alternating red and blue ensigns. This illustration seems to be more decorative than authoritative.

A Bit of History: Once Upon a Time, l Went Cross-country Skiing in Québec
Scandinavian cross-country skiers laid out the first ski trails in Québec nearly a hundred years ago. Some of these trails still exist, such as the Maple Leaf, laid by the Jackrabbit himself, which is part of a network of trails winding through Val-David in the Laurentians
The history of skiing began with Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith-Johannsen, one of the legendary figures responsible for the immense popularity of cross-country skiing in Québec. Born in Norway in 1875, he immigrated to Canada in 1901 and worked as a railway equipment salesman. Since his job required that he travel to remote locations, he travelled by ski , which is how he explored the Laurentians. Many of the trails he made back then still exist today. The Aboriginal people called him "Wapoos" (jackrabbit) because of his ability to walk on the snow. To raise awareness of his favourite sport, he founded many cross-country ski clubs throughout the Québec territory. He died at the age of 111, having made his mark on the history of cross-country skiing in Québec.

As the English attitude towards Acadians intensified in the early 1750's, more Acadians moved westward to join with other Francophones. When the deportation started in 1755, many Acadians sought refuge in Quebec. When 2000 Acadians escaped to Ile St. Jean, about 600 of the sick and elderly were sent to Quebec. And when Louisbourg fell in 1758, many of the Acadians on Ile St. Jean fled the island and headed to Quebec. One of his former colleagues at the Petit Séminaire, J-Adrien Boivin, has made himself a place in the building industry. He is the one who built Lévis Tardif at the corner of Adolphe-Routhier, and later, Jacques Gagnon at the corner of Louis-Fréchette. Michel Doyon notices that there are many tourists at Lévis Tardif. Once houses are put up on chemin Sainte-Foy, between Sir Adolphe-Routhier and Ernest-Gagnon, and once he sees these houses for sale, he tells abbey Adolphe Doyon at the Séminaire de Québec about his idea and the abbey lends him $3 000. He pays $15 000 for the 725 (1215), and gives the money he borrowed as a cash-down. As soon as he is set up, he quickly notices that he must absolutely buy the 735 (1223) too if he doesn't want to be caught between two neighbors who surely won't like the activities which will be going on in his new acquisition. This time, he manages to borrow the 6 000 $ he needs as a cash-down from the authorities at the Séminaire de Québec, thanks to his brother Jean-Luc. They are equal owners of this new property. Jean-Luc will hand his share over to Michel on March 13, 1972, copy registered in Quebec on March 15, 1972 (n. 714 131). The brothers promise to pay back the loans granted by the abbey Doyon and from the Séminaire de Québec . No mortgage, no garanty other than their word. Michel Doyon does not have a lot of money set aside. He must now furnish his two houses and get them ready as soon as possible. One of them, the 725, is ready in early July of 1947; the other, one month later. All the furniture are bought on credit at Légaré's. Simone Coderre, his wife, makes the curtains and takes care of the decoration. Hiring people to help is too expensive. He therefore goes to his father, his brothers and sisters for help and convinces them to move from St-Benoît. He also asks his brother Jean-Luc and his friend François Marier for help.

Christopher Hibbert has a phenomenal knack for taking historical data and restructuring it into readable and entertaining fare. In Wolfe at Quebec , Hibbert once again proves his talents for writing entertaining, yet accurate, history books. In this short work, Hibbert chronicles Major-General James Wolfe's leadership at the battle for Quebec at the decisive engagement fought between the British and the French on the Plains of Abraham. When the battle ended, Quebec was to fall to English hands, and Wolfe, at the advanced age of 32, was destined to die from the wounds he received in the battle.
Wolfe is an intriguing character who has been virtually overlooked by history. Some books offer a romanticized version of the man, after all there is nothing more heroic than dying write after you commanded and won a decisive victory. But for the most part, if he is even mentioned at all, it is simply as a British commander who fought the French during the French and Indian Wars. Overall, our knowledge of Wolfe has also been colored by the lack of information that has been available about the man himself, as well as his military exploits. In writing Wolfe at Quebec , Hibbert has made use of many previously unstudied documents, including military records, diaries, letters, ship logs, and eyewitness reports to help reconstruct the man, and the battle. Hibbert was also granted unprecedented access to the material belonging to the Wolfe family.

    The largest winter carnival
Since the beginning of our French colony, the habitants of New France formed a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. Already at this era, this intense period of revelry was designated as the Carnival - a word of Italian origin that signifies Mardi Gras. The tradition of celebrating at the end of January until mid-February is a custom long in progress. From one winter to the next, the Carnival's programme of activities was enriched. We have since added even more popular activities, such as winter sports, snow sculptures, and activities based on the Quebecois folkloric lifestyle, such as canoe and dogsled races.
The Quebec Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world today, and is third on the Top list of Carnivals, following the famous carnivals in Rio and New Orleans.
