    Growing Green
    Project Description
    November 2002
Growing Green is a two-year law and policy reform project, funded in part by the federal Voluntary Sector Initiative, and is designed to:
    • develop concrete, practical law and policy models and reform proposals to reduce the ecological impact and increase the sustainability of Canadian food production regimes, and strengthen the capacity of voluntary organizations to contribute to the development of federal, provincial, and local/community-based agri-food law and policy.
Growing Green is a project of West Coast Environmental Law (WCEL), FarmFolk/CityFolk (FF/CF), and The Liu Institute for Global Issues. All three organizations will work collaboratively with (and share the project benefits among) dozens of affiliated farming, food, and voluntary sector organizations.
Growing Green will focus on federal, provincial and local law and policy as it applies to growing food in and around BC's urban areas. To acknowledge and build upon innovative ideas generated across the country, Growing Green will work with and seek advice from exemplary national organizations like the Toronto Food Policy Council and the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada.
Growing Green is based on the premise that many food producers wish to grow healthy food without compromising the ecological integrity of the land, water, and air or the sustainability of rural communities. Growing Green will ask: What can be done to remove barriers, correct perverse disincentives, address regulatory hurdles, or fill regulatory gaps in order to pursue the potentially enormous environmental and economic benefits associated with growing food in an environment-enhancing fashion?

If you prefer you may download this page as a Word document I Why Study Rural Land and Business Management at Aberdeen? This degree programme is the only one of its kind in Scotland, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduates therefore have the option of following a career in chartered surveying (Rural Practice Faculty) should they wish. The Department has an excellent reputation in the field of land and business management. We provide a supportive environment, with excellent teaching and research, in which students can pursue their individual interests. Students also benefit from our strong links with the land and business professions, and easy access to rural areas of Scotland. What is Rural Land and Business Management? It is concerned with the management of land, its related business activities, and interests. It integrates knowledge and skills from a range of disciplines to meet the future challenges facing land owners and land managers. Knowledge of traditional land management (agriculture, forestry, sporting) and emerging land uses (such as hotel developments, countryside access, steading conversions, and telecommunication masts) is combined with the business skills necessary for successful decision-making and business diversification. The rural land and business manager is concerned not only with practical land management but also with the financial, legal, planning and policy contexts within which decisions are made.
