Foster Parenting: Reaching Out to Support Displaced Children
By Anne S. Robertson
  • increases in the number of child abuse and neglect reports, increases in the rates of re-entry into foster care, increased amount of time that children spend in care, decreased support from other systems such as mental health and juvenile justice systems, and increasingly complex and changing needs that may be manifested through emotional/ behavioral problems, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS infection, and medically fragile or physical handicaps.
With the growth in the population of foster children, as well as the increased level of expertise required for support, most states work throughout the year to find and train good foster families. However, Debbie says that despite the lengthy application process and other procedures, placements don't always work. In fact, after her first year as a foster parent, she almost gave up. The two siblings who had been placed in her family simply needed more than Debbie and her husband could provide. The placement team decided to move the children to a residential treatment home that provided more intensive structure and support. The next child that the Calhoun's fostered was a teen who needed a father and a family. This child did well and has since entered college on a scholarship. Seeing the success in their teenage foster son encouraged the Calhouns to take more foster children. Currently, the ages of their children range from 5 weeks to 22 years.

Foster families are people who take children in need of temporary care into their homes to provide day-to-day care and nurturing. Each child in foster care should have a plan that will let him or her grow up in a permanent family. For many children, the plan is reunification with the birth parents. In these cases, foster families may work with the birth parents as well as with the child, helping them both learn the skills they need to live together again. Foster parents need to be able to love the children who live in their home, and let go of them when it is time to send them back to their parents. For other children, reunification will not be possible. For them, the plan may be another kind of permanent living arrangement such as adoption, guardianship, long-term kinship care, or permanent foster care. Foster parents may become adoptive parents or maintain other kinds of formal or informal ties with the children they parent. Every state has its own rules about foster parenting. However, the chances are good that YOU can be a foster parent in your state.

Q: Who do I call to become a foster parent?
A: list of counties is available online. This list of private agencies is a good place to start. Private agencies usually will only license you if they feel you live in an area that they currently service or can service in the future. You may have to call around to determine if an agency services your community. And in some counties, the local mental health center may also license and train foster parents, such as Adult and Child Mental Health Centers. After you determine who you are going to call, your first questions should be:
Q: Do you have an orientation process for people wanting to become foster parents, and if so, what is it?

So, you are thinking about becoming a foster parent. I am sure you have read in the newspaper lately that there is a tremendous need for foster parents. Now, you are at a point in your life where you feel you would like to open your home to a foster child. And, as you listened to the evening news, you wondered how you could get involved and how you could make a difference in the life of a child. More importantly, you are wondering if you are ready to become a foster parent.
Foster parenting requires certain skills and personal qualities. Two important qualities are patience and a genuine concern for the child. These will come in handy when you face the challenges of parenting the foster child. Another important one is commitment. Many of these children have learned not to trust adults. As a result, they will put your trustworthiness to the test and your commitment to that child will demonstrate how much you really do care. Throughout your foster parenting experience, you will need to educate and equip yourself with the knowledge and skills necessary to parent needy children. Most foster family agencies will provide regular training for you. In order to help you make this important decision, I have a list of questions to ask yourself. Answering these questions will give you an idea if you are ready to become a foster parent. Here are the 8 questions to ask yourself:
1. Are you looking for an opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of a needy child?

The young inmates now being warehoused like cattle in brutal government institutions will finally be allowed to live like humans. Other beneficiaries of Foster Care will include the homeless street-children sleeping in sewers as well as the sickly-handicapped-crippled living with their parents in poverty. Funding for truly effective Foster Care Agencies will come from re-channeling the millions of dollars presently being embezzled annually at these "orphanages" by all levels of bureaucrats. Hopefully, the savings from a non-graft system will be sufficient to fund medical attention and therapy for all children. Click here to go to White House.

What is Foster Care? Foster care with Logan County Children's Services is the full-time, temporary care of a child (birth to 18 years of age) in a family foster home that has been certified according to guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. This child cannot stay in his/her own home due to serious family problems, and there is no suitable relative available to provide for him/her. The child may have been a victim of abuse or neglect or may lack adequate care from his/her parents through no fault of their own. foster care is a way to provide for this child on a full-time, temporary basis. How do these children come to our agency? Some families voluntarily seek help from Children's Services and ask that a foster home be provided for their children until their crisis is over. The Juvenile Court also may place children under the temporary custody of the agency. The rules affecting children coming into foster care are set and monitored by federal and state laws. What kind of behavior can be expected from foster children?

When a baby is screaming in pain as he goes through drug withdrawal, it's natural for a person to want to hold and comfort the baby. However, in the early days, it is crucial to the baby's well-being that he have as little stimulus as possible. You can turn his head away from you and let him face a blank space. Avoid bringing him face-to-face with you OR putting him in an up-to-the-shoulder hold. Leave the overhead lights turned off. Keep music out of his room. Avoid wearing strong perfume. Limit the number of people in the room and the amount of handling he gets. Foster Parenting

    99. Allegations: The Freddy Gruger Of Foster Parenting
Allegations The Freddy Gruger of foster parenting. How many times throughoutour foster parenting career do we hear the phrase at risk children ?
    http://foster.freeyellow.com/freddy.htm
    Allegations:
The Freddy Gruger of Foster Parenting by Barbara Leiner
When we first enter the world of foster parenting, we are excited, enthusiastic, naive, willing and eager to meet the challenges that face us. We plunge into this endeavor with the expectations of making a better life for a child, and, sometimes a whole family. How many times throughout our foster parenting "career" do we hear the phrase "at risk children"? Do we ever hear "at risk foster parents"? No. If prospective foster parents knew the perils that lurched inside this crazy world of caring for abused and neglected children, would many continue the recruitment process? I wouldn't think so. Still, I wonder why so many foster parents stay in a field that can turn our world upside down at the whim of one person. I am talking about erroneous allegations. An allegation of any nature is devastating and hard to pull one's self back into the mainstream of everyday life. We are never the same after an accusation a little disappointed, frustrated, confused, embarrassed, hopefully much wiser and that proverbial wall gets a little higher. Accusations can happen to any of us at any time. The neighbor doesn't like foster children living next door to their "perfect" children; thinks it lowers property value. The foster child that thinks he/she will be sent back to live with their biological family if they convince the social worker the foster father has molested them or the foster mother hits them and deprives them of food. Vulnerability is a foster parent's middle name. We are forever and always "at risk".

foster parenting. There is absolutely no person more valuable to a rescueorganization than a foster parent. Would foster parenting be for me?
    http://www.caninecrusaders.org/foster.htm
Foster Parenting There is absolutely no person more valuable to a rescue organization than a foster parent. In fact, animal rescue would be all but impossible if it weren't for the caring souls willing to open their hearts and their homes to these animals in desperate need of a temporary safe environment.
    Frequently asked questions about fostering:
I don't have the time to keep a dog forever. Would foster parenting be for me?

We are often approached by people who wish to help the animals but don't have time to volunteer every weekend or don't have the resources or time to care for an animal permanently. Fostering is a perfect opportunity for those unable to volunteer in other areas to make a positive contribution to the life of a needy animal, and is most definitely a worthwhile and noble act of kindness.
What does a foster parent do?
Foster parenting entails nothing more than allowing an animal who is in the rescue's system to stay in your home and receive the love, nurturing and daily care that any animal deserves until he or she finds a permanent home. Although we can never guarantee how long this will take, the average is several weeks, however it could be as little as a few days or as much as a few months. A foster parent has the right to discontinue fostering at any time for any reason, so if you feel that you're no longer able to be a foster parent you are always given the option to stop.
Canine Crusaders provides all medical care, food and other necessities for the animal. All you need to provide is a safe, loving environment until he or she is able to find a permanent one.
