1-0 out of 5 stars How to raise quiet, manipulative christian kids
- Some good points in the book but a writing style that would even make Kathy Lee Gifford gag.

- Not sold as a "Christian" book but is heavily slanted that way.

Overall, I feel these techniques, if taken as the absolute facts in which they are portrayed, will make your children quiet, well behaved, law abiding and brain dead.It claims to encourage thinking for yourself but if someone gives you two choices that amount to the same thing, are you thinking for yourself or just being manipulated? And you're being taught how to manipulate others. Most of their advice boils down to saying "You can walk to your room or I can carry you there" rather than "Go to your room."All of the better advice in the book can be found in many better books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting with Love and Logic
Wish I had this book 10 years ago before my youngest children were born...or even before my teenagers were born!Simple, easy to use methods to interact with your children that don't involve yelling (or even raising your voice). The hardest part is getting rid of my old habits in order to incorporate the ones from the book that actually work! This book has been a Godsend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I Love this book! the principles are really so simple but so effective! I can see the difference in my kids already.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Advice for parenting
I'm horrified, no...saddened, that so many reviewers have rated this book so highly. What kind of children are we raising in society if these are the methods many think sound sensible.
My review is not as sophisticatedly sounding as the other 1-starers. And, I refuse to waste too much of my time, reviewing this book as I did reading it.
Let me just simply say.... the book should have been called: "Parenting to develop children with the character of a marshmellow".

5-0 out of 5 stars a realistic and helpful parenting book
My husband and I took the Love and Logic class to help us with our eight-year-old son, who was talking back A LOT.The class was good, and inspired the purchase of this book. The book has proven quite effective, getting my husband and me on the same page (no pun intended!) so we can be consistent in our discipline.Love and Logic is about giving kids choices, therefore some control, and holding them accountable. We have been slowly implementing the ideas and are having success!!I would definitely recommend this book, but suggest taking the class if you have the opportunity, to give you the background knowledge to support your learning. ... Product Description
Most people entering the profession of foster parenting become quickly disillusioned when they realize that parenting children is only half of their job descriptions. The other half is survival in the foster care system itself! There is plenty of training available for parenting difficult children, but no one prepares foster parents for what comes along with their foster children, namely, a whole entourage known as the foster care treatment team!

Foster Parents require much more than parenting skills to achieve success and longevity in today's foster care world. The goal of this book is to help foster parents improve the climates where they live and work, which in turn enables them to be available for needy children for the long run.

Foster care agencies experience huge turnovers in foster parents. That is because the majority of people entering this field have altruistic motives to help children succeed without possessing the knowledge they need to survive on the foster care treatment team.

Foster parents most begin to see themselves as equal professional member of their children's treatment teams. Living with foster children 24 hours a day, seven days a week makes the foster parents the highest level of experts about those children. The problem is that they are not recognized as experts by the other members of the team!

This book will help foster parents take a more aggressive approach to educate themselves about the inner workings of the foster care system and be able to make better sense of why the other players on the team do what they do. The author's insight as an adoptive and foster parent, and also as a foster care social worker provides information to the reader from both prospective. It is a must read for all foster and adoptive parents and social workers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless! Rules to LIVE by.
This book is definitely the one to live by if you want to raise responsible, caring, and independent children! It's a struggle to change how you've lived in the past, but having this book at your side will keep you on track. My daughter was very surprised when I told her I was only going to be her 'consultant' on issues that came up everyday, and I let her know that I trusted her to make the correct decisions after asking my advice. She knows she will have to deal with the consequences that arise from her choices. I believe that this will get her ready for being on her own soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Practical and insightful. Many good ideas in the book.If you need some ideas to help your teenager or soon-to-be teenager become responsible before and after leaving home, this book will give you great ideas, including sample conversations to model.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Helped me to stop hovering over my child and give him the freedom to make his own choices.Great help.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book hits you right between the eyes, where you need it!
I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents, and anyone else involved with teens and pre-teens. It contains hard-hitting examples and advice for dealing with "teen-age thinking" in such a way as to encourage teens' development of responsibility for their own actions and making plans for the consequences of their choices. I bought it on the recommendation of a psychologist as a gift for a struggling single parent of a 14-year old who is living "on the wild side."

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents of pre-teens & teens!
This book so helpful & useful.I've used a couple of the techniques on my 11 yr old son and they work great.
This is a must read for parents!
I've been recommending it to everyone I know. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchasing
Excellent book and was expediate in shipping. Thiese books were highly recomended and I can understand why. This really works! Buying from Amazon is a lot cheaper than purchasing from Love & Logic book store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
No clue what B. Breaux is on about...talk about misleading!A: they didn't review this book, B: among other things, Love & Logic has no connection to Focus on the Family (aside from both being based in CO one in Golden, the other in Colorado Springs), and C: neither Love & Logic nor Focus on the Family are anything close to being "extremist cults"...both are Christian based, yes...extremist or cult, no.

On to actually reviewing the book!

I have both this and the other "Parenting with Less Stress" books, as well as "Love & Logic Magic for Early Childhood", and while for my own personal style some of the ideas and examples presented are more harsh than I would utilize, the concepts underlying them are solid and work amazingly well.

There was a time I wondered if I was going to be able to get through the twos and threes, and thanks to the Love & Logic concepts, not only did we survive them....we enjoyed them!

Find the Love & Logic book geared for your needs (less stress, for early childhood, for teens, etc)...you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource but only if you want to find a stress free way to raise responsible, safe kids.
Not sure what the other reader was talking about.I am an agnostic so I am pretty aware of that kind of thing.I was also a teacher. Not only does Love and Logic work in the classroom but it does amazing things with my kids.I have 2 toddlers and I think the Love and Logic books and videos are an indespensible resource. It seems to me that the previous reviewer was just looking for a forum to rant about something totally unrelated to these books. He also wasn't reviewing this book - I guess some people will actually mislead people to try and get their voice heard. If click on "see my other reviews" under his name you will see that he has reviewed every book in the Love and Logic series with this rhetoric that is based on complete ignorance.Charles Fay and Foster Cline (founders of Love and Logic) are from Evergreen Colorado - not Colorado Springs and have nothing to do with the whole "family first" thing. There is no affiliation whatsoever.Again, not sure what the other reviewer was talking about - but it is a shame that he may turn people away from a resource that is the most effective tool I have come across to raise children who are responsible, able to make choices effectively, have great self-esteem, and to avoid all the arguments and power struggles that come with parenting.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is B Beaux's agenda?
Why is it ok for this individual to say Jim Fay has an agenda with "Focus on the Family" extrimist cult? This is the first time I have heard of them being an extrimist cult and I live in Colorado.Where does B. Breaux get this information?Especially since this person has bought many of his books based on the number of reviews, albeit, identical reviews that appear on all of the books supposedly purchasaed by B. Breaux.

Could it be that B. Breaux is using this as his/her own political platform instead of giving an honest review of the book.Obviously this person does not understand that you do not give the child a reason when using this approach because through the process the child acquires the logic on his or her own through the loving scenarios. While some of the techniques might not fit for every family, it is up to the individual who is reading the book to decide what does or does not go along with the family beliefs.I would hope B. Breaux does not read other parenting books and say, yes, this will all work for me.No one book is the know all and say all.

Additionally has B. Breaux not been in a store lately to hear how these mothers still exist in abundance. Is B. Breaux afraid to hear another way of doing things? Maybe B. Breaux should go hear Jim Fay speak in person. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but overgeneralizes....
I had always wondered why I had never been able to find a great book about foster parenting, and reading this book, I think I realized why.Foster parenting can be *so* different from state to state, and can even differ hugely within states depending on the county or program.

As a result, there's a lot of great information in this book -- but not all of it may be an accurate picture of what foster care is like where you live. Repeatedly throughout the book, I came across info that was presented as a universal truth of foster care that just is not true here where I am -- and it's not like our county is a unique little special snowflake, different than everywhere else.:pAs an example, the book states several times that foster parents have to pay for daycare out of their own pockets (and that's a cost that will almost always be greater than the monthly stipend), but in the two areas I've lived in most recently (and in different states), the foster care program does indeed pay all daycare costs in most circumstances. This wasn't the only thing, there were just lots of little issues like that.

At the same time, the book doesn't go very far past "intro" level stuff, which sets up an odd conundrum. The people who have enough background to know which information just doesn't apply in their area probably aren't going to get very much out of the book; and the people who will find the most new info in the book are probably also those who may not be able to tell which parts aren't relevant to their situation.

So, why did I give the book 4 stars instead of 2 or 3?Because I think for a very specific population, this could be a truly excellent book -- people considering foster care, who are just wanting to learn more about how it works and haven't taken the training classes yet. The other books that are out there are really focused on people who are already foster parents -- and often on foster parents who have taken on especially challenging children, to boot. It's great to have a book that I can pass on to friends who want to learn more about foster care that doesn't go straight into reactive attachment disorder, etc., but instead focuses on the broader issues about what foster parenting can be like.I'd feel totally confident passing this book on to people like that, I'd just do so with the caveat that some of the logistic information presented may not be true with their state/county/agency/program.I think this book can be a great starting point for people who have been thinking about signing up for that foster parenting orientation session they've seen advertised at church or the library, but haven't felt comfortable taking the plunge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting Children with Health Issues
As a nurse that works with children with Congenital Heart Disease and many other health problems, I find that parents can be overwelmed with their child's disease process and put parenting on the back burner. Parenting doesn't mean being the bad guy. This book tells you how to parent with love, not anger and encourage your child to grow, mature and cope even in the face of critical health problems. Many parents tend to keep their child in the dark about their illness until they become young adults and then do not know why their child doesn't take over their own healthcare needs or doesn't know how to cope with their illness. Instead of reading the whole book which can overwelm many parents we encourage reading specific chapters first and especially read the stories. If you ever get a chance to attend one of the author's presentations jump at the chance to attend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Awaited Advice
As the mother of a child who has Cystic Fibrosis, I was so happy to begin reading this book and using it's suggestions immediately.I found that the advice, when applied correctly, really does work. Our CF respitory therapist recommended it to me, and it has been a great reference for me and my husband.I plan on sharing it with our extended family as well so they may have the tools on hand when needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing and peace making
This is the most helpful book I have ever read. My wife reads parenting books and luckily she left this one sitting on the table. I like that it's caring but not too sappy and the tools are simple and straight forward. This book has made a huge difference in the way I deal with our kids, all of them including the one with cystic fibrosis. I feel like I can handle things better because I know what to say and do when my kids are acting up instead of getting mad at them. Our kid with CF hardly ever fights with us about his medications now and he seems happier, too.I also don't fight with my wife about the kids as much. It has really helped us. Our home is so much more relaxed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wise guide for raising empowered children under difficult circumstances
This book is a profound yet practical guide to raising resilient children who have significant health issues. The publication of this book can best be described as a gift to families who are faced with far more complex challenges than are found in those with more typical children. These challenges include how to help children feel a sense of control, acceptance and hope while living with serious disorders. It provides a wise guide for helping raise children who are able to embrace life while taking good care of their health conditions. The book reflects a synthesis of the best in parenting skills along with a rich understanding of child psychology, family dynamics and a range of chronic disorders. This wealth of information is distilled for the reader in a format that is easy to follow; readers are provided with numerous examples of how to implement these insights. It is a unique and thorough guide to critical aspects of child-rearing that are just not found anywhere else. I regard this book as simply indispensable for families and professionals alike. It is a gem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Might be helpful to a prospective foster parent
As a foster parent of almost three years, this book had little new information for me.But it might be helpful to a prospective foster parent.

The content is superficial.(But what do you expect in 99 pp.?)The chapters on the licensing process, children's responses to foster care according to age/developmental stage, and foster parents' expectations are adequate introductions. "Working with Systems" (interfaces with agencies and other groups) says little that couldn't have been grasped through common sense. "Preparing [for the placement]," Emotional [Issues]", and "Dealing With Special Problems" are simplistic and suggest the average foster child will respond fairly quickly to firm limits and responses guided by attempts at understanding a child's behavior. For example, "Saying things such as, 'I'm glad to have you in our family,' or, 'You reallly do that great,' can counteract feelingsly of inadequacy."Perhaps, but the child who truly feels inadequate is probably going to act out that inadequacy for some time (and in very dysfunctional ways). Stahl writes, "As long as foster parents remember that their job is to provide a corrective experience.. and not to undo the effects of the child's history of abuse and neglect, they can do a more satisfying job and have more confidence in their parenting ability." That may be true in very temporary placements, but the longer you have a child in your home, the more invested you become in helping him or her heal.

In his closing chapter, Stahl indicates that recruiting more foster homes-- enough for every child who needs one-- willl help "guarantee the quality and quantity of service for the foster child in need."Personally, rather than recruiting others, I'd prefer to spend my time supporting foster care alternatives and preventatives (so that fewer children are removed from their homes) and working to increase supports to foster parents and services to foster children in currently-licensed homes.

Stahl writes like a consultant (which he is) rather than someone who's actually "been there," by opening his home to foster kids. This book is quick and easy to read, but I am much more enthusiastic about the work of Dr. Richard Delaney, and Vera Fahlberg's "A Child's Journey Through Placement." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for raising great kids without all the power struggles.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have kids, you need this tape!
As a Love and Logic instructor, a parent and school counselor, I am familiar with many of the L&L tapes and concepts.Because of this, it is unusual to have an "ah-hah" moment such as the one I had listening to "Homework Battles."As parents and educators, our dream is to find a way for our kids to do homework for their own benefit, and hopefully take ownership for grades, missing or late assignments, and to enjoy the benefits and fun of school. In an enjoyable and nonjudgemental format, the authors point out how parents can do the exact wrong things for the right reasons, making homework and grades into an adolescent power struggle or a drudgery by forcing our value systems and expectations down our child's throat at the exact time they are rejecting our values out of hand. The authors also point out how we, as parents, do not receive report cards in regards to our parenting skills, so we take ownership of our child's performance at school as a close surrogate. Bad idea, and fundementally counter-productive.

This tape helps parents focus on a child's strengths, thereby building self-esteem and a good self-concept, through placing ownership of the grades squarely on their shoulders. All the pizzaz is placed on the positives while only gently touching upon the student's weaknesses. The authors compare this with having your spouse review your output during your day when all you want is to come home to a safe, supportive house.Even with the spouses best intentions, how long would you stay married to someone who only concentrated upon your weaknesses?

Get the tape...it has changed how I work with parents, students, and my own children! It works, and it makes the whole process much more fun for the parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winning the Homework Battle
This tape was my first introduction to the Love & Logic program and now I'm hooked on the idea! The ideas presented in the tape are just what I needed to give me the freedom from my teenager's homework and turning the responsibility back to him!It all makes so much sense! Most parent's probably need to learn from these tapes that our responsibility to our children is to let them learn to take responsibility for their actions!!Excellent tape and they're fun to listen to! ... This book is full of the techniques that we have used successfully over the years. Many we have adapted to suit their needs and many we have made up ourselves. What we have become particularly good at is not giving up!A mother of two adopted children, Celia Foster has written "Big Steps for Little People" as a personal 'insider's guide' to parenting adopted children.Drawing on the hard-won wisdom gained in her own family life, Celia offers a thoughtful account of life with adopted children and examines the issues that many adoptive families encounter, including the development of children with attachment problems and how to tackle behavioural difficulties. She combines real-life anecdotes with suggestions and strategies that other parents can put to use. This book will be a great comfort and help to all adoptive families and offers insights for the professionals who work with them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
I really enjoyed this book because I have done so much reading on adoption and the problems that can arise. This family adopted and kept on going. They experienced so many different adventures, so many different ways to adopt/foster children. Sometimes enough is not enough and we realize that more is not too much. It's a great read. ...
