TREASURE HUNT HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT INTRODUCTION It's easy to sit back and do nothing about the environment! Unfortunately for us all, the more apathy we show, the quicker our environment will deteriorate. In this Treasure Hunt you'll find ways in which you can help. TASK Your task is to make a list under these headings:
  • WAYS I CAN HELP PERSONALLY; WAYS I CAN HELP AT HOME; WAYS I CAN HELP IN THE YARD; WAYS I CAN HELP IN THE CAR; WAYS I CAN HELP ON VACATION; WAYS I CAN HELP WHEN SHOPPING; WAYS I CAN HELP TO SPREAD THE WORD; WAYS I CAN HELP AT SCHOOL.
You should include at least three items under each heading. If you think you're too young to help with some of these things (because only your parents are old enough to do them), you can still help by educating them. Some of your answers may commence with 'I can make sure my Mum/Dad always ............' The Bag Bed
Eco-friendly practices for the classroom

Write a poem?

Ways to help the environment
...
Here's where you can find some help
CONCLUSION As you've discovered, there are many ways you can help the environment. Just one person can make a difference.

SUBJECT SAMPLER ENDANGERED SPECIES INTRODUCTION Did you know that:
  • for every species that is alive today, perhaps a thousand more have lived previously and become extinct the current extinction crisis is unique the causes of the crisis are the activities of a single species: human beings current rate of extinction appears to be hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of times higher than it would be if there were no humans the species that are most likely to survive mass extinctions are cockroaches and weeds human beings have created the factors that threaten so many species today, and human beings can create the solutions that will reverse the current extinctions crisis
There's no getting away from the fact that we, as human beings, are involved in animal endangerment. As is says above, we caused it, we can help to fix it. In this Subject Sampler, you'll learn about how a group of people helped one species to survive and flourish. When you have completed the activities, write a paragraph answering the question: What changes did the people of Meeps Island make to ensure the frogs survived? Legend of the Flying Frogs
  • (Part 1) How do we know about the story of the flying frogs today?

Goals
The objective of the Atmospheric Environment Programme is to inform, facilitate and interact with policy processes aiming to reduce atmospheric pollutant emissions to levels that limit their impacts on the environment. It involves research and activities to assess, quantify and model emissions, impacts and emission mitigation options, and link this information to policy processes at different scales. Further activities enhance the capacity of countries (particularly in Asia and Africa) to identify atmospheric pollution reduction strategies and implement international agreements. Approach The Programme deals with air pollution problems at a range of different scales: local air pollution relating to urban and peri-urban issues;

Becoming VR-Savvy: Middle School Girls Learning and Building Virtual Worlds Together
Fall 2002 - Spring 2003
Umesh Thakkar, NCSA and Graduate School of Library and Information Science (principal investigator); Renee Cooper, Kevin Erlinger, and Pam Van Walleghen, Urbana Middle School (participants); and Alan B. Craig, Kalev H. Leetaru, and Amanda L. Stephano, NCSA (participants)
A recent report by the American Association of University Women confronts the question of what changes are needed in the computer culture to improve its image, repair its deficits, and make it more appealing to girls and women (2000, p. viii). The report recommends Fluency with Information Technology (or FITness). Fluency requires gaining of three kinds of inter-dependent knowledge: intellectual capabilities, information technology concepts, and information technology skills. The VR-Savvy pilot project provides seventh- and eighth-grade girls from Urbana Middle School with opportunities to collaborate with each other and their teachers in technology, science, and art to design and create their own virtual worlds on the Illinois Prairie. They use the virtual reality (VR) CAVE at NCSA. The project will develop technological fluency for both girls and teachers.

Soil and Environment Activities
The following activities are designed for you to study how sol and the environment affects agriculture. Try some or try all of the tasks. Some of these ideas are taken from the Agriculture Saskatchewan series by Saskatchewan Education.
Activity 1: Soil Texture Recognizing soil texture and its related characteristics is very important in production decisions made by producers every year. Obtain dry samples of sand, silt and clay. Record your findings in a journal writing format.
Using the samples of sand, silt and clay, rub a pinch of each between the thumb and forefinger? Which is the smoothest? the coarsest?
Place a pinch of one of the samples in the palm of one hand and add two drops of water from an eyedropper. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the water with the soil. Describe how the sample feels when wet. Repeat with the other two samples.
Place no more than three to five grains of salt in the palm of one hand. Using an eyedropper, add five drops of liquid laundry starch. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the salt and liquid starch. Add three drops of white glue and mix. Compare this mixture to the mixtures produced in part B. Add two more grains of salt and mix. Describe the effect of adding more salt.

Environment Theme Activities
Knowledge of the environment is critical to understanding an archaeological record for two related reasons. First, the environment of a place and changes in the landscape through time selectively preserve and destroy archaeological sites. For example, knowledge that Mississippian sites are not found in certain parts of the valley in meaningless unless you know the landform in that part of the valley was available for Mississippians to occupy. Second, the environment offers insights to the cultural and social decisions any group of people make. That is, it presents both opportunities and risks to people that change through time as the environment changes and that change as new social systems and technologies develop. In essence the environment often sets boundary conditions for many of the social and cultural decisions a people make to adapt to and utilize resources. The following questions and activities encourage you to think about how opportunities and risks associated with living in the valley may change through time and from one location to another. They also encourage you to consider how environmental variables influence human decision-making. Essay Questions
  • How do we know that the Mississippi River has changed its course through time?
