Product Description

Health and Community Design is a comprehensive examination of how the built environment encourages or discourages physical activity, drawing together insights from a range of research on the relationships between urban form and public health. It provides important information about the factors that influence decisions about physical activity and modes of travel, and about how land use patterns can be changed to help overcome barriers to physical activity. Chapters examine:

? the historical relationship between health and urban form in the United States
? why urban and suburban development should be designed to promote moderate types of physical activity
? the divergent needs and requirements of different groups of people and the role of those needs in setting policy
? how different settings make it easier or more difficult to incorporate walking and bicycling into everyday activities
A concluding chapter reviews the arguments presented and sketches a research agenda for the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Public Health and Planning finally reconverge
This is a very well written and presented book about the physical elements of our community design that compel us to discriminate certain forms of transportation over others (i.e., motorized over car). The implications are about health--getting enough "moderate" exercise each day. "Moderate" exercise is more accessible than the various forms of specialized exercises we have (i.e., sports teams, going to the gym). Exercise can be utilitarian in nature--it doesn't have to be specialized. For instance, transportation can be a form of exercise. When it is utilitarian--built into activities we have to be doing anyway--it saves time, instead of being "another thing to add to the schedule" it is killing two birds w/one stone.

Certain features and designs in the built environment are more helpful in encouraging the general population to using forms of moderate exercise (i.e., walking, biking) as transportation.

The idea of "utilitarian exercise" is cool--I wish they would have talked more about other (nontransportation) forms, such as gardening, etc.

The book also contains an excellent but brief review of the history of community health and planning at the beginning--how "solving" the health problems of the past era have led to the health problems of this era. The goal this time is to find a real solution--not one that leads to different types of health problems all over again.

Most satisfyingly, it is very well written and easy to read through.Any jargon is well-explained, and it is kept to a minimum.Based on quantitative science, it never (to my recollection) leaps to conclusions its data could not support--rather the authors highlight questions which the data produce and need to be pursued further.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent but probably will be outdated in a few years
This book is one of the first to address the relationship between suburban sprawl and Americans' sedentary habits. The authors point out:
1) that Americans drive more and walk less than residents of other affluent nations
2) that Americans have become more sedentary and fatter in recent decades
3) that Americans exercise more when they live in more pedestrian-friendly environments, and
4) that Americans are unable to walk as much as they would like because most American cities and suburbs are built by highway engineers and government planners to discourage pedestrian traffic; streets are too wide to safely walk, zoning codes mandated densities so low that shops are often not within walking distance of residences, and federal housing regulation has encouraged streets to be disconnected to each other that nearly all journeys require a stop at a high-speed, congested arterial.
Because this book was built in 2003, the authors devote relatively little space to the connection between sprawl, lack of exercise and obesity. In recent years, some studies have begun to document this connection, and I hope that the authors come out with a second edition addressing these issues. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Earth Book for Kids: Activities to Help Heal the Environment
Prompt delivery and excellent condition. The child may be willing to read it through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I am teaching a class about the environment at a summer enrichment program and I bought this book to use as a classroom resource and to get some project ideas. I bought a few environment books for kids and this is definitely one of the best. Fir example, it it much better than "365 Ways to Live Green for Kids". This book is divided into five main sections: Energy, Resources and Recycling; Air, Land and Water; Plant and Animal Habitats; More Ways to Make Every Day Earth Day (which includes even more environmentally friendly projects); and Where to Write & Glossary (which includes resourced and places you can write to get more information). Most of the activities included in this book are targeted for kids 3rd grade and up, but there are also more than a few things you can use for kids as young as kindergarten or 1st grade. There are great tips for helping the environment and also ways to make things from recycled materials. The book is also really good at explaining how things work like the water cycle and wind and solar energy. One con about the book is that it was published in 1990 and needs an update. Many of the facts and figures about how much trash we accumulate or how many animals are endangered are no longer correct. Overall, though, I highly recommend this book for teachers and parents who want to make their children more environmentally-aware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Children, Parents and Teachers!!!
I was looking for a book to help get my children aware of our environmental problems, and help me teach them in a fun and exciting way! THIS IS IT! Easy workbook style. Easy Read, Fun projects that can be adapted to children of different ages! If you are teacher of young children, this book is a must! Help the young learn now and they will grow up into the next generation that will protect our earth! This book will definitely show children how they can start solving environmental problems right now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching children to respect the Earth
Linda Schwarz, along with her illustrator Beverly Armstrong, has written an activity book for children on how to care for the earth. In simple format, she defines the basic terms and ideas used in environmental study. She then offers a number of activities for understanding these concepts. For example, she describes acid rain, then gives instructions for a project to measure the amount of acid in your own rainfall. This is a useful idea book for children's rainy day or school projects from about third grade on. In fact, this would be a handy reference book any of us could use for quick definitions and helpful illustrations. It could help us better make our points in conversations and community discussions about environmental problems and what we can do about them. (Originally reviewed in The Auroran)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Source for Teachers!
This is a wonderful book for teachers to have for elementary age children when having a unit on Earth Day or celebrating Earth Day.Mainly it allows many different ways that children can help save the Earth. There are several sections of the book: Energy, resources, and recycling; Air, Land, & Water; Plant & Animal Habitat; and More Ways to Make Every Day Earth Day. Each of these sections provides simple facts and information while providing ways for children to help out or be actively involved in each particular topic. At the end of the book, there is a section called Where to Write & Glossary which provides a page on how to request for information and also provides many different resources/organizations that children can write to to obtain more information.I would definitely recommend this book for teachers to use for Earth Day units but also for children to read from if they are interested in helping save the Earth. ... I decided to start vermicomposting this month at both my home and my classroom. My kids at school (8th grade) are really excited about it.I bought this book for ideas to incorporate composting into my lesson plans. Some of the pages are geared toward younger students; however, there are plenty of pages that are appropriate for middle schoolers.

Product Description
The dwelling is a central setting in peoples everyday life. People use their dwelling and residential environment for a large variety of activities and purposes. The Meaning of Activities in the Dwelling and Residential Environment systematically relates activities, settings and meanings to improve the insight into people-environment relations which is called a meaning structure approach. Over 600 people, living in either a city centre, suburban or rural type of residential environment were asked about their everyday activities and the meanings thereof. The results show that meanings are important for the way in which people use their dwelling and residential environment. The meaning structure approach allows for a high level of aggregation identifying general meanings of the dwelling, such as a place to be together with family and friends. It also allows for a low level of aggregation, for example using Internet at home has become part of everyday life for many people, providing them with easy access to a wide range of information. This illustrates the usefulness of meaning structures as a tool for investigating people-environment relations.

Product Description
The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in the space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The manuscripts submitted to this Monograph are divided into the following parts: (1) solar surface magnetism, (2) solar magnetic activity, (3) dynamical response of the heliosphere, (4) space environment exploration and monitoring; and (5) space weather prediction. Papers presented in this meeting but not submitted to this Monograph are listed by title as unpublished papers at the end of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly an excellent resource for teachers and parents
Our whole school district has successfully used this book for the past 6 years as the foundation for our monthly parent volunteer-led natural science learning experiences in our thirty-five K-4 classrooms. The information is first rate, engaging, and there are multiple learning and teaching entry points for a wide variety of learners and presenters. We have especially appreciated the "do-able" quality of the activities.Materials needed are pretty straight forward and easily acquired. The best part for our parent presenters has been the tongue-in-cheek quality of the humor in many of the puppet shows.A hint:NEVER skip the puppet shows! They are the best starting points for the big ideas of the lessons. Also, make sure to read the 3 introductory essays for great supportive information to build confidence as a presenter or just as an informed parent working with one or two kids.

Yes, the drawings are truly excellent.Susan Sawyer is an artist worth investigating. Both she and the editor of the revised edition, Lisa Purcell, obviously love what they do and communicate that on every page. The margins of my well-loved copy are filled with ideas shared from children through the years. You'll do the same.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interacting With Nature
This Revised and Expanded Edition of Hands-On Nature is an engaging how-to activity book--for children and for anyone looking to bring them before nature, whether at home, school, camp, playground, hiking, a workshop, or other pursuit. Here is a practical guide for the environmental enthusiast. Page after page it exhibits a wide range of detailed illustrations in black and white, many that appear as works of art. The text is well-written and easy to follow and understand with keywords that are highlighted in bold type, easily directing the attention of the reader to an order of valuable terms and particulars on nature. The book is divided into chapters, namely: Adaptations, Habitats, Cycles, Designs of Nature, and Earth and Sky, with related subjects like birds, insects, plants, flowers, streams, earth, deer, logs, and clouds. The chapters are organized into two sections, starting with an informational essay to introduce each chapter, followed by an activity and experiment segment that may include a brief script for a puppet show or play, and a suggested reading list. This book was made possible with the help of a large group of teachers, professionals, students, and volunteers. It should be included in every family's collection of books to read and share.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like Project Wild you will love this book
Any Environmental Educator or Scout Leader who has ever gone to a programlike Geosphere, Project Wild, NatureQuest or Project Learning Tree willLOVE this book.

Everything is organized by lessons and activities thatare coded to match certain skills like Predation, Plant Succession, etc.

I have used this book for years at Boy Scout Summer Camps and I knowthe American Camping Association recommends this book for anyone involvedin teaching Environmental Skills & Nature at a camp setting.

Perhapsthe only draw back is the plain colorless sketches of the book.A teacherwould appreciate the book's content but I would not get this book for akid.Having said that, this book is a great pick for any leader, summercamp, or school where teaching an understanding & appreciation ofnature is a priority. ... Product Description
Environmental issues have in recent years come to the centre stage of political and ethical debate. This is a crucial topic to engage in this series. Moreover, there has long been the charge, classically formulated by Lynn White Jr, that the biblical and Christian tradition has legitimated and encouraged humanity's aggressive domination of nature to serve human interests. Biblical visions of the future, with destruction for the earth and rescue for the elect, might also seem to discourage any concern for the earth's future or the welfare of future generations. In this volume, David Horrell sets out this context for discussion, and illustrates the diverse ways in which the Bible has been interpreted in relation to issues of ecology and the environment. A wide range of biblical texts are discussed, from Genesis to Revelation, and competing interpretations are contrasted and evaluated. This analysis shows that the Bible provides a thoroughly ambivalent legacy, which cannot straightforwardly provide positive teaching on care for the environment, but nor can it simply be seen as an anti-ecological book. Finally, then, Horrell argues that what is needed is the explicit development of an 'ecological hermeneutic'. This involves constructing certain interpretative lenses which both arise from the engagement between our contemporary context and the biblical text and also generate a new reading of the biblical tradition appropriate to face the challenges of the ecological issues that face humanity at the beginning of the third millennium. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Many Light Bulb Articles
Having read some articles in this textbook for class, I came across some readings that opened my mind to new ideas that I never considered.

For example, I never considered myself to be a religious person because I didn't want to be told how to live my life. However, after I read Loy's article in the textbook, I discovered that I did buy into a religion called market capitalism, and that I didn't think completely for myself, as I had previously thought.Unconsciously, market capitalism was telling me how to live (by keep working), how to percieve the world (by being competitive), and how much I was humanly worth (by the amount of money I made).

This textbook has many eye opening articles as the one mentioned above, and some of your light bulbs may get lit too. ... Read more

Product Description
This comprehensive introduction to the physics and chemistry of Earth's atmosphere explains the science behind some of the most critical and intensely debated environmental controversies of our day. In it, one of the world's leading experts on planetary environments presents the background necessary to assess the complex effects of human activity on our atmosphere and climate.

Unique in its breadth and depth of coverage, The Atmospheric Environment includes a survey of Earth's climatic history to provide a context for assessing the changes underway today. It is written for--and will be of lasting value to--a varied audience, including not only students but also professional scientists and others seeking a sophisticated but readable introduction to the frontiers of contemporary research on biogeochemistry, depletion of stratospheric ozone, tropospheric air pollution, and climatology.

The book covers both the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere with an account of relevant aspects of ocean science, treats atmospheric science and the climate as an integrated whole, and makes explicit the policy implications of what is known. Its critical account of steps taken by the international community to address the issue of climatic change highlights the challenge of dealing with a global issue for which the political and economic stakes are high, where uncertainties are common, and where there is an urgent need for clear thinking and informed policy. The book also sketches key gaps in our knowledge, outlining where we need to go to fully understand the impact of our actions on the climate.

Thorough, timely, and authoritative, this is the book to consult for answers about some of the thorniest and most pressing environmental questions that we face. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional and thorough
I took Mike's class at Harvard and found it fascinating. The book is thorough and extremely clear - when I first opened it I was intimidated by the number and complexity of some of the diagrams but all is explained in the book in short order. The chapters on climate change and urban ozone are particularly interesting. I think this book could easily be read even if you don't have a scientific bent by just skipping some of the more technical work - you don't need to understand the photolysis of ozone to understand smog. I don't know of any other text that applies to so well to a fairly broad audience.
THe only group to whom I would not reccommend this book are serious grad-level atmospheric chemists. This would be a little infantile for that group. ... Read more
