29. NativeTech: Nipmuc Splint Basketry
Nipmuc Splint basketry 1820's~ Arnold family, storage baskets paintedin walnut stain Mohegan pink. Nipmuc basketry Traditions.
http://www.nativetech.org/weave/nipmucbask/
Native American Technology and Art Nipmuc Splint Basketry Prepared in conjunction with A Special Talk and Exhibition of Nipmuc Baskets "Remembering Nipmuc Homelands in Histories" led by Dr. Russell G. Handsman at The Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford. sponsored by The Nipmuc Indian Association of Connecticut, Inc. on June 30, 1996 If we only ask how or when a basket is made or decorated, we will find out little about the lives of Nipmuc basket makers . If we ask Who made Nipmuc baskets? and Why ?, we may glimpse into the lives of the basket makers, and understand a little of their histories.
Splint baskets therefore can be about society, people, and history, yet it is often difficult to realize this when we look at a basket on a pedestal and read a label with little more than names
(Handsman and McMullen).
Nipmuc Basketry Traditions The Nipmuc people of southern New England have always been known for their beautifully decorated baskets. Inside a wigwam in 1643, these baskets were used instead of shelves to store all kinds of food and household supplies (Roger Williams 1973). A European traveling In 1674 described these traditional baskets as "very neat and artificial, with the portraitures of birds, beats, fishes and flowers, upon them in colors" (Gookin 1970). Long before European contact, Nipmuc people made baskets from materials including: birchbark, bulrush, cattail, cornhusk, sweetgrass, dogbane, cedarbark. Nipmucs and other New England Natives began making baskets out of prepared wood splints in the 1600's. Natives in the Delaware River area may have first learned the preparation of wood splints for baskets from the Swedes (Snow 1980). Some of the earliest known woodsplint baskets were made in the mid-1600's by the Iroquois in what is now western New York.

Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art Tai Gallery / Textile Arts represents over 30 Japanese bamboo artists. Most of these artists belong to one of two professional associations although a few are independent. The Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) emphasizes art and sculptural beauty. The Nihon Kogeikai (Japan Craft Arts Association) emphasizes beauty in functional form and technical excellency. The Kogeikai works with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in the selection of craft artists to be named as Living National Treasures of Japan. Some established artists choose to not be associated with a professional association. Young artists who have not yet joined an association are also included in this group.
More information on the professional associations and many of the artists represented by Tai Gallery / Textile Arts can be found in Robert T. Coffland's book, Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Arts, available from Paragon Books and Amazon.com.

    Looking for Basketweaving SUPPLIES

    Look for the monthly specials:
What are most baskets made of?
    What are "reed" and "cane"?
Reed and cane are the products of the tropical vine "calamus rotang". They're harvested in various parts of Asia, then processed in factories into the different sizes of reed and cane. Reed is the inside of the vine, and cane is the outer bark. Cane is also the material used for woven chair seats. Flat reed comes in various widths as measured in fractions of inches: for example, 3/16", 1/4", 1/2", 7/8", etc. Round reed is measured in numbered sizes. Smallest numbers measure the smallest diameters. #1 is a very narrow weaver, whereas #6 is a good sized spoke. Anything larger than #10 is generally furniture-gauged.
Why are basket materials used wet?
What kind of basket should a Beginner start with?
"Round" means one that has spokes in a radiating base pattern- like the spokes of a wheel. "Square" means any kind of simple square or rectangular base pattern- woven like a checkerboard.
