Editorial Review Product Description This classic text in basket-making, now in paperback, shows how to transform fragrant pine needles into stunning coiled baskets and other decorative items. It’s surprisingly easy, with all 40 projects based on wrapping needles around a center. From this simple technique, however, crafters can create limitless variety through the way they shape the coils, dye the needles, vary stitches, embellish with beads and seeds, and incorporate leather and wood. Special sections address gathering and storing materials, making lids and handles, and more. Customer Reviews (22)

Editorial Review Product Description Even baskets of everyday use, such as cooking baskets and seedbeaters, exhibit an astoundingly sophisticated level of design, while specially made gift baskets adorned with bird feathers and beads are objects of pure exuberance. Some of them are over 150 years old, while others were made within the last few years. Color photographs of each basket are accompanied by insightful commentary not only from art historians and knowledgeable academic scholars, but also from prominent native weavers and California Indian artists in other media. Their eye for native aesthetics shows us how to look at the baskets in a new and exciting way. This strong combination of visual beauty and knowledgeable insight makes _The Fine Art of California Indian Basketry_ one of the most important books ever published on the subject. Great book on California Indian Basketry
Just fabulous It covers all basketry traditions from the various geographical areas in California, looks at differences between and within tribal styles, includes utility as well as art or "tourist" baskets, discusses baskets by makers both unknown and extremely famous, and it doesn't ignore baskets made by*male* weavers. No tradition is marginalized in favor of another in this work, and that's unusual! What makes this book really great, though, are the mini-interviews with contemporary Native California weavers and other artists (including the late Vivien Hailstone and Harry Fonseca) about the individual pieces reproduced in the book. These people give the reader insights into weaving that would otherwise be missed. It's nice to see a book on Native America where the Indian voice is so fundamentally present. ... A lovely book that will teach you Lonning's art
Basketry as Art Most basketry books, written by well-knownartists, give very good basic techniques but stop short of givinginstructions in the way the work was made to be distinctive. Not so withThe Art of Basketry. Beginning with the basics, she soon follows withclearly written instructions, illustrated with color photographstep-by-step sequences of her distinctive styles: her double wall coneshaped pieces, her "hairy" baskets, her grid bases and herbeautifulcolor patterning. For example, her spiralpatterns look verydifferent from the wicker spirals I have been taught. How does she do it? By using 4,5, even 6 rod waling- that's how. All illustrations are donewith color photographs, not diagrams. Many full color photographs of herwork are included. The remainder of the book explores the work of 23other recognized baskets artists such as Leon Niehues, Dona Look and theMcColleys. They each give their artist's statement, their motivation, andsome "hints" at how their items are created.Again full colorphotographs of their work make each page interesting and beautiful. Thisbook is a "must have" for anyone wanting to expand their wickerbasketry skill to "beyond the ordinary". It is also for anyoneinterested in a collection of photographs of artistic baskets and foranyone who works with design through color combinations. I would highlyrecommend it. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description In Columbia River Basketry, Mary Schlick writes about the weavers who at the time of European contact lived along the Columbia River from just above its confluence with the Yakima River westward to the vicinity of present-day Portland, Oregon, and Indian groups living along the river, she presents the baskets in the context of the lives of the people who created and used them. She also writes about the descendants of the early basket weavers, to whom either basketry skills have been passed and from whom she herself learned to make baskets. Schlick blends mythology, personal reminiscences, materials, and basketry techniques. Written with deep understanding and appreciatoin of the artists and their work, Columbia River Basketry will be an inspirational sourcebook for basket weavers and other craftspeople. It will also serve as an invaluable reference for scholars, curators, and collectors in identifying, dating, and interpreting examples of Columbia River basketry. Customer Reviews (1)
