PARK, Ruth (1917– ), novelist, autobiographer and children’s writer, was born and educated in New Zealand but has spent much of her adult life in Australia and has written extensively on both countries. Much of her childhood was spent in a small King Country town, and she has drawn on that experience to write fiction in which Maori–Pakeha relationships in rural communities play an important role. In The Drums Go Bang! (1956) she and the Australian writer D’Arcy Niland tell amusingly how they came to meet as young journalists, how Park went to Sydney to marry Niland (in 1942) and how they then travelled adventurously through the Australian ‘outback’ before settling in Sydney. Their efforts to get established as full-time writers are described vividly and reveal much about the conditions of literary life in both countries during the war years. In Sydney they lived in a slum area called Surry Hills and made strenuous efforts with partial success to get work published in newspapers, journals and through the broadcasting system.

Review
In each of these stories, set in Australia, a character is confronted with the unexplainable: mysterious disappearing shapes in the elevator, an old woman who climbs to the roof of an apartment building, holds out her arms and flies off into the night, a rear-view mirror reflecting something that isn't there, a fur collar comes to life and an old car is haunted by the ghost of a man who drowned his family in it, to name a few. Each of these apparent apparitions helps the main character face something very real. These tales make good read alouds or read alones for kids who want to read Stephen King but aren't quite up to it.

A lively account of the history and culture of Sydney by a much-loved local author. The book is intended for residents interested in the history of their city, and for the more cultured tourist. Contains a great number of fascinating anecdotes about places and buildings and the historical figures associated with them. It serves as an admirable companion to the more practical guides to Sydney (eg. Lonely Planet) and is much shorter than its house-brick competitors. Contains six maps and 24 pages of colour photos. Brilliantly written, as if Ruth Park is actually there with you as a friend. ' Elizabeth Ellis in the Sydney Morning Herald The Park style is a perfectly tuned instrument, in charge of imagery and information, with a little picture bomb going off in the mind's eye every third line or so ' Alex Buzo, Sydney Morning Herald

Patients treated by cauterising suffered from high fever and their wounds were swollen and painful. His patients suffered little from pain and without swelling. (1771-c1806) Explorer of Niger River.
He returned to Bathurst in 1805 with a party of 40 Britons to compete his exploration of the Niger. By the time he had reached Bamako some 29 had died from malaria and dysentery and all but four died before he set off downriver in a boat. In November he sent one of his guides back to Bathurst with his records to that date. He was never heard from again. Later explorers learnt that his party had been attacked along the river (perhaps for not offering tribune) and finally his boat had been ambushed and all drowned at Bussa Nigeria (about 700km from the mouth of the Niger or about 2500km along the river from Bathurst). His records of the middle section of the Niger had been lost. NZ writer Ruth PARK says he was an ancestor of hers. [DRD] PARK

The Frost and the Fire
by Ruth Park Chapter 8 HERE at the end of the century they still speak of the snow of '63. Nowadays, with roads criss-crossing the Province, such a freeze would not cause death and devastation as it did then. But then, as we know, most of the fields were linked only by bridle or wagon tracks through the tussock. When the snow fell they were created islands, and the plains and valleys between became perilous seas. Here is the sidling where a mail coach and four fine horses vanished for three weeks: on yonder stony ridge fourteen men and a drunken woman froze to death one August night. This river, black and rapid, was solid from bank to bank, and even in the mud-marbled ice you could see the golden streaks. Perhaps it would not have been so bad if the floods had not come first. We were still floundering in skilly mud when the freeze began. A wattle-and-daub house is tight and snug. Its foot-thick walls are barriers against the cold, especially when the air is warm within. But our windows were glazed with calico that in a few hours was like a brittle sheet of spun sugar. You could feel the cold coming through those windows in oblong blocks extending far into the room. "Well," said Uncle Alick. "It's either pitch darkness or freeze to death", and he fastened wooden shutters to the dowels that had been left protruding from the earth walls for the purpose. So we spent most of the winter in lamplight. When my mother complained he answered, "You're lucky. Some of the diggers have no more lamp than a hollow turnip with a bit of cannle inside."
