Product Description
Mount Rainier is the fifth highest peak in the United States outside of Alaska, and it soars higher above its immediate base than does any other in the lower forty-eight. Its geological and glacial origins and current ecological health are described in the book, as is the century-old stewardship of Mount Rainier National Park. Its stories include accounts by Native people such as Saluskin and Wapowety, climbers from John Muir and Fay Fuller to Willi Unsoeld and Lou Whittaker, and entrepreneurs from the Longmire family to Paul Sceva. Here, too, are the tales of scientists and tourists, park rangers and volunteers. A wealth of illustrations span the decades. Some of the photographs are from albums of the 1912 and 1915 Mountaineers outings; others are by noted early photographers such as Imogen Cunningham and Asahel Curtis and by contemporary photographers such as Ira Spring. Paintings include a sumi by George Tsutakawa and a series specially created by Dee Molenaar.Amazon.com Review
This compendium makes a useful addition to the existing canon of personal accounts, age-yellowed histories, and helpful guidebooks to Washington State's Mount Rainier National Park. Kirk, who has written on both nature and history, lived in the park for five years, and has both climbed and circled Rainier. The book ranges widely, if not too deeply, into just about everything to do with a remarkable natural landscape capped by the highest mountain--from its base--in the lower 48 states.

Kirk ably considers all sides of the park: the local animals, the history and nature of volcanic activity, the politics of the name "Rainier," and the environmental changes wrought by a boom in the region's population. In the "Voices of the Mountain" sections of the book, first-person written and photographic accounts of Rainier experiences highlight human interaction with the mountain over the last century. Centenarian Floyd Schmoe writes about working in the park in the 1920s, and poet Denise Levertov, who never visited the mountain, writes of its effect on her each time she viewed its snowy peak from her home in Seattle: "always loftier, lonelier than I ever remember." Enlivened by photographs on each page, some from as early as the turn of the century, this book is a fascinating introduction to the mountain Native Americans called Tahoma. --Maria Dolan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.
This book shows the history of Mount Rainier National Park, from Sunset to Paradise. The photos are great and the paragraphs are informative and don't run on. The book also goes into the history of the 14,411 foot Stratovolcano, and how 5,600 years ago, the peak was at 16,500 feet, but a major eruption caused a massive collapse and created the peak we know, love and cherish today.

The Sleeping Giant... The Mountain...Mount Rainier...

5-0 out of 5 stars Appeals to both mind and eye.
Years ago I hiked at Mt. Rainier, took pictures in its flower meadows, and slid in its summer snow. I thought someday I'd climb its glaciers to the summit, 14, 410 feet. That never happened. But this book brings back allthe old impressions and delights-and adds to them. Lots of photos (280!).Lot of information, most of it new to me. Richard P. 4-0 out of 5 stars A timeless warning about the disappearance of natural resources
My Sister Sif by Ruth Park (Playing Beatie Bow) tells the tale of Rikoriko and her sister Sif. Orphaned after their father died, the girls are sent to live with their aunt in Australia. After growing up on the tropical paradise of Rongo, their new home Sydney, with its mad rush and choking pollution, is absolute torture, and Riko (known as Erika in the city) hatches a plot to escape.

Riko's idyllic summer on Rongo turns sour with the arrival of an American scientist, Henry Jacka, who's falling in love with Sif. Riko is bitter and upset, lashing out at those closest to her. She escapes up into the hills to vent to her friend Pig, a ground-dwelling Stone Age dwarf with an intense fear of fire.

The book inserts a dizzying blend of science fiction (telepathy, space age materials, mermaids, dwarves) and heavy-handed environmental warnings (mankind will destroy the earth!) into a relatively slim story; the main focus is on Riko's intense jealousy of Henry attempting to take Sif away from her. The climax felt forced and the sacrifice trivial; the ending fared better. This was originally written in 1986, and its age clearly shows in the descriptions of the "near future": rather than space-age technology, we get environmental disasters such as underwater dead zones, active volcanoes, tornadoes and floods, resulting in the death of butterflies (not quite yet!) and bees (much closer to reality). It's still an engaging read, especially for fans of mermaid- and dolphin-centered novels such as A Ring of Endless Light: The Austin Family Chronicles, Book 4 and Emily Windsnap: Three Swishy Mermaid Tales: Books 1-3, but is much more serious in tone than other books in this genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a young person
I read this book when I was really young and loved it, it was intelligent and captured my imagination. I ended up reading it more than once

1-0 out of 5 stars My Sister Sif
I wasn't very impressed by this book. It was colorful and fairly well written, yet somehow, it seemed as lifeless as an artificial flower. It wasn't easy to get into and I lost interest before I'd even got halfway through. The story itself was bizarre, and for the most part, torpid; the casual indifference and bluntness to which we're treated to the sudden appearance of mermen, telepathic dolphins and even dwarves(!) only seemed to make it worse. After fifty or so pages, I skipped straight to the end, only to find more of the same. Heck, I only paid 99 cents for my copy and I still feel ripped off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and hard to put down!
I truly love this book. It was one of those books that held my interest the whole way through and was definitely worth the time. This story includes fantasy, adventure, a bit of romance, and a whole new way to look at mermaids. I really recommend it to anyone who loves reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good fantasy for the younger readers.

Product Description

She just wouldn’t get up—and with that simple, courageous act Rosa Parks struck a blow against injustice. Parks showed what one person, without guns or violence, could do to change the course of history forever. Nelson Mandela claimed “she is who inspired us…to be fearless when facing our oppressors.” As a volunteer secretary for the NAACP, Parks chronicled racial injustices and fought for desegregation. Then, on December 1, 1955, she made a stand on a Montgomery, Alabama bus: she refused to relinquish her seat for a white man. Her arrest mobilized the black community for a citywide bus boycott that led to a landmark Supreme Court decision. Award-winning author Ruth Ashby beautifully conveys Park’s dignity and determination.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old favorite
I loved this book when I got it for my children many years ago-especially the humorous ending.Their copy was lost and I was thrilled to find another copy (like new!) on Amazon.I highly recommend it.

When I looked at it anew, I hesitated for a moment to read it to my 3 and 5 year old grandchildren because the faces the little boy makes are drawn so gruesomely.I couldn't remember how old my own children were when I read it to them.I went ahead. Both grandchildren were thoroughly tickled with the book and we read it over and over again.Even the 3-year old thought it was very funny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poking faces
"There was this boy named Josh. He could do lots of things. There was one thing he could do best of all. He could make faces."

This was a favourite story of mine as a child, and it is still amusing today, mostly due to the illustrations. Josh pokes really ugly faces to his advantage and disadvantage.
This book appeals to children 4 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read-aloud from down under
Watch as Josh makes some really scary colorful faces. Large colorful pictures and the story keep the attention of young listers as they listen to Josh's story.

Josh learned how good he was when he made a face that scared the big, angry dog next door. He scared Gran and the mailman. His dad told him, "I don't know if you've heard Josh, but if you are making a face and the wind changes, it will stay that way."Josh scoffed.

When the wind changed one day while he made his best face ever, Josh heaved and squeezed it to smooth out his face. How could he change it? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5.5 Stars. SHOULD BE MADE INTO A MOTION PICTURE OR A MINI SERIES!!!
A client of mine came in and said she is listening to the audio of SWORDS AND CROWNS AND RINGSby Ruth Park. Her comment was she didn't want to ruin the story BUT he was born a dwarf had trouble finding work but was a great lover.Well that got my curiousity going as I thought I may have already bought that audio and filed it away. I had it upstairs. So within 1 day of that recommendation I was listening to the audio.

The correct beginning is Jackie Hanna is a dwarf who had the most loving mother. His father had trouble accepting Jackie being a dwarf. The father died while Jackie was young.Jackie's mother remarried and the "Nunn" his nickname who gave Jackie total love and support to be confident and achieve.

The girl Couchie Moywho lived nearbybecame Jackies best friend and they both went through their childhood together. Jackie had to leave home at 15 years as noone would give a dwarf a job due to every excuse under the sun.

But relatives gave him a job on a fruit farm there were 6 brothers and one girl. 5 of the 6 brothers (most were over 6ft tall) would pick Jackie up like a rag doll and throw him around. One who was drunk often picked on his badly daily. Jackies life was hell but he needed the work. The young female cousin crept into his bed one night and after a few nights of this she ended up being pregnant. But so was Couchieback in town.

Back in the depression daysyou had to marry the girl if she was pregnant. He didn't know that his true love Couchie Moy was pregnant also.

The story stretches brilliantlywith Jackie's special kind of courage and captures the mood and tempo of Australian life from 1907 until 1931

This story in my opinion is equal to THE THORN BIRDSby Colleen McCullough.

Highly recommend this wonderful and moving story!!!!!
