News More News Kasparov wins chess Oscar for 2001 World No. 1 Garry Kasparov won the Chess Oscar for 2001 for his stupendous show during the year 2001. The award instituted in 1967 goes to Garry Kasparov for the eleventh time. Over 300 journalists from over 60 countries voted and when the scores were weighted and added up, Kasparov was the easy winner with a tally of 3,943 (including 260 1st places) votes. However, there was a very close race for second between last year's winner Vladimir Kramnik and the new teenage FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov. In the end Kramnik, with a tally of 2,970, nosed out Ponomariov, who took the third spot with 2,959 - over 1,100 votes ahead of countryman Vassily Ivanchuk. The award was the brainchild of Spanish journalist Jorge Puig - with the co-operation of the International Association of Chess Press (the AIPE abbreviation is derived from the French name of the organisation - Association Internationale de la press echiqueene) - who initiated the annual award in 1967. In 1989, following the demise of the AIPE, the Oscar became defunct. However, following a seven-year hiatus, Alexander Roshal, the influential editor of the top Russian magazine "64-Chess Review", revived the annual award.

CHESS - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! Garry Kasparov (1964 -) That Garry Kasparov should be both Russian (in the broadest sense), and a Western hero may seem contradictory, but is not if viewed correctly. He first came to prominence in 1978 at the age of 14, when he played in and won an elite tournament in Minsk. His arrival on the scene coincided with Glasnost and the break-up of the former Soviet Union. When he played Anatoly Karpov for the World Championship in 1985, it was young versus old, new Russia versus the Establishment, and everyone in the West was cheering for one person only. Karpov in Russian actually means 'fish' and well suits his cold, clinical style and character. Kasparov, on the other hand has always produced adventurous games, sometimes brilliant, sometimes flawed, but always inventive. Rarely content with attack on one side of the board, he often conducts a kind of 'global warfare', striking at his opponent where he least expects it! Kasparov also embraced the computer age completely, allowing his to be the brandname on one of the top new chess-palying computers for the home market. He has his own website ( KasparovChess ), full of news, facts, lessons and an alternative to ICC (

Garry Kasparov beats Deep Junior supercomputer
New York 23 January 2003 The championship seriesis being held at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) from January 26 to February 7, 2003, in 6 matches with classic time control. Kasparov is the highest rated chess player in the world with a FIDE rating of 2829. Since a young age, he has shown a level of chess mastery that few have been able to match. At age 12, he was the USSR Junior Champion; a Grandmaster at 17, and at 19 years old, he was regarded as the second strongest player in the world. At 21, he played his first World Championship match against GM Anatoly Karpov, which ended when FIDE called off the match when neither player was able to achieve the required six victories after forty-eight games. This was the first of five world chess championship matches between Kasparov and Karpov. Kasparov won his second match with Karpov in 1985 to become the youngest world chess champion ever. Kasparov then successfully defended his world championship title three times against Karpov in 1986, 1987, and 1990. Deep Junior, programmed by Amir Ban and Shay Bushinsky, has won the world computer chess championship three times. With an opening database by GM Boris Alterman, grandmasters have commented on its aggressive attacking style and tremendous tactical ability.

    Garry Kasparov
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Garry Kimovich Kasparov , born April 13 as Garri Weinstein in Baky , but adopted his mother's maternal surname of Kasparov when he was 12. He first started learning to play chess after studying a chess problem set up by his parents, and proposed a solution to it. Garry's rise up the FIDE ranking order is nothing short of phenomenal. Starting with an oversight by the Russian chess federation, Garry Kasparov participated in a Grandmaster tournament in Banja Luka whilst still an unknown (the federation thought it was a junior tournament). He emerged from this top-class encounter with a provisional rating of 2595, enough to catapault him into the top group of chess players. It was clear from early on that Garry had the playing strength to match the then current world champion Anatoly Karpov - a firm favourite of the Russian Chess Federation. But first Garry had to pass the test of the Candidates Tournament to qualify.

On Saturday, he spoke with CNN technology correspondent Daniel Sieberg. SIEBERG: People might remember his match in 1997 against IBM's Deep Blue, but last night was the conclusion of this first annual official man versus machine match, and joining us now is the man from that match, considered by many to be the best chess player in history, often likened to the Michael Jordan or the Wayne Gretzky of the chess world, if you will. In this unique series of videos, World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov tells his own amazing story, from teenage hotshot to modern chess icon. For the first time ever we go behind the scenes and catch the inside stories to discover the real Garry Kasparov. Along the way we will gain a privileged insight into how the strongest player of all time learns and improves. Every chess player will be fascinated by Garry’s unique chess theories of "material, time and quality". Indeed, Garry's often nonchalant attitude to material and his patented tactical bludgeonings remain the new blueprint for aspiring attacking players today. Kasparov's style - brash, energetic and aggressive - has set the standard for the next generation of chessplayers, where risk-taking in the pursuit of victory has almost become an end in itself. As Garry takes an emotional trip through his career, he holds up up for examination some of his most cherished memories, forged in nerve-wracking hours spent in mental combat at the board.
