3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to Kasparov's great works
Kasparov's great works of chess literature: The Test of Time, New World Chess Champion, London-Leningrad Championship, tower above this watered down career summary, Fighting Chess.Much of the book is taken verbatim from those other works. There are many additional annotated games here, but there is nothing to recommend this book if you have the other mentioned works. Those other books are still available through various sources on the 'net.Certainly, Fighting Chess is essential for hardcore Kasparov fans; but The Test of Time alone can keep you occupied for probably a year, so I see little need for this book.Plus, it is a physically smaller book, unlike the previous Pergamon works, which were the large softcover, double-column format that was so attractive. In sum, this is a nice summary work of Kasparov's career to '95, but get the other books instead!

5-0 out of 5 stars gary kasparov's fighting chess
gary kasparov, one of the best descriptive annotators of all time, dazzles us with brilliant combinations of wit and chess moves. A great collection of games from a great chess player! This book also comes with crosstables of tournaments which add even more character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting Stuff!
This book contains 91 games, 38 of which are annotated by Kasparov himself.Kasparov's games are some of the most exciting in chess. It's hard to find much to criticize in a book by and about the man who isprobably the greatest player of all time.My only beef is that it's alittle on the pricey side (almost 27 Yankee dollars, including tax).ButI've spent more money on worse books, so I shouldn't complain.I amsurprised that the book is out of print. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Garry's Vol 1
The collections of games in this book are interesting and allow the average player to see how even master play has mistakes to be taken advantage of. Kasparov is one of the best players ever and this volume is even more entertaining than Vol 2 with his youthful dynamic play. Igor Stohl examines these games with current understanding of thematic analysis of the master level play. I have bought both volumes and enjoyed both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done analysis
Stohl's book on Kasparov's greatest games, pre-1994, is terrific. The layout is easy to follow and the analysis sharp.I anxiously await volume 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reminder of a remarkable talent
Do you realise that it is nearly 20 years since a collection of Kasparov's games appeared? Remarkable but true. So such a book as this is certainly not premature, though one might think that the author was clairvoyant in view of the fact that its publication coincides with Kasparov's shock declaration of his retirement from competitive chess.

In this, the first of two volumes, the author takes 74 of Kasparov's best games from the period 1973-1993, and subjects them to a detailed analysis. The author is well known for his analytical writings, and has already had published by Gambit a collection of games (Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces) based on his column in a Czech magazine.

In this book he has drawn on a wide variety of sources, including Kasparov's own annotations, and the emphasis lies in explaining the thought processes behind the moves. It is impossible for me to say anything about Kasparov that has not been said before, but for a reminder of the remarkable talent that now appears to be lost to the chess world I recommend that you simply read and enjoy!

This review first appeared in 'En Passant' magazine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of games
I really enjoy the collection of games. The analysis is very good. If you like Kasparov, you will like this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Chess Meat!
This book is a little loaded on the front end...meaning it seems to overanalyze the opening (meet the modern era!), but it certainly doesn't neglect the rest of the game either.Games are annotated heavily (sometimes after just about every move) so that the games are often around 7 pages long!Lots of chess meat, right?Of course, great, but it is so exhausting, after about the first 10 moves I have spent almost 2 hours on just half the opening (I am the type of person that has to go through every annotation and analyze every line till the end or I just feel dirty :).By then I am ready to go to sleep and tackle the rest of the game the next day, which invariable I never do...

That said the annotations are very accurate, very informative, and I am sure took a very large amount of time to complete. And although I prefer the Andrew Soltis style (ala "Bobby Fischer Rediscovered" and "Why Lasker Matters") of giving games with just enough annotation to give you a good idea of what the player had in mind and why other moves are bad or better-- mainly because this method allows me to solve some of the problems myself and think for myself more--but I cannot really knock Stohl's more in-depth approach as it allows me to look at stuff I wouldn't have thought of.Only thing is the Soltis style is much more pleasurable a read and allows you to view the game as a whole without the feeling you need to take a break after the completion of each phase of the game (opening, middlegame, endgame).

The only real complaint I have about the games chosen is he includes a few blitz and rapid games. As a wise man once noted, "he who analyzes blitz games is stupid." No matter how well the player played relative to time, they can't be included in a player's Greatest Games Ever book.

But in the end, I would recommend this book if you like a challenge or just like Kasparov's style of play.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining..and more.
Having gone over only the first few games in this book (and not owning Volume one) I can definately say these games are highly entertaining. Whether you can learn much from such high-level chess is debatable but certainly there are excellent notations and it is evident why Kasparov was world champ. Not just great chess, but dynamic, exciting chess. Playing over some of the games just leaves you in awe. It's expensive, but if you get it as a gift as I did, it's like a treasure. Some of you may do better to seek out cheaper versions of his games. If you play chess, you can not ignore Kasparov and certainly the author has put a great deal of effort into this contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stohl is Superb!
If you're the type of hardcore chessplayer who isnt satisfied by the average 'best games' anthologies, thinking the analysis either too skimpy or full of too much calculation and not enough words - pick up these two vols of perhaps the greatest player of all time.Stohl annotates these games the way I wish most anthologies were annotated.Lots of calculation, but lots of words explaining the ideas as well. The book (hardback) is nice and big, well put together and easy to work with. The games are of course breathtaking and I hope one day Stohl works on the games of my favorite player, Karpov. I have over 20 anthologies of great players, but these two vols are by far the most impressive analytical work. They are absolutely perfect for "Kotov Sessions".The author may be criticized for being a bit cold and removed, but I'm looking for hardcore top level chess and I am 100% satisfied with this work.Beyond Impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all players.
Without doubt, Garry Kasparov should be considered the greatest palyers of all times. Not only his ELO rating 2851, the quality of games are all speaking for themselves. Yes, Fischer in the period 1970 -1972, I think his strength was on par with him.( in fact the two giants's style of play are very similar!!) But only 3 years!!Kasparov dominated the chess world for 20 years. He accepted all the challeges from the old masters, like Karpove and Korchnoi, he defeated his comtemparies like Hubner, etc,
and even the younger stars, except Kramnik, cannot give him much trouble.I think the other player can stand with him was Lasker. Who before World War, dominted the chess world for 27 years and also never afraid any challanges to him!!
The two volumes are must for all players, no matter what level your are!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Deep Calculations at your Fingertips
As you may well know, Garry Kasparov is the highest rated player in chess history, it is said that he aclompished that because of his deep knowledge and preparation in openning theory, his extreme study in the end game, but most of all, he is considered a combination genius. Some of his most impresive victories come from amazing sacrifices and moves that lead to unquestionable wins, and now you can have them explained to you by the master himself, who in his own words, tactics is the most important thing to be studied in chess, after tactics have been mastered one can move to openings.

Not only will he explain the moves from his own games, but from other masters as well like, Kramnik, Anand, Polgar, Shirov, and many others. The book is dividen in perfectly defined sections like queen sacrifices and rook sacrifices with a short exaple at the begining of each chapter and a collection of exercises taken out from real master's games. A little hard for complete begginers, but nevertheless invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garry Kasparov's puzzle book
This book is great! Ideal 4 the improving player.Written by the world's best attacking player! What else can u ask 4! You 'll be in 4 some spectacular combinations!

It has a chapter for every piece (usually the combination starts with that piece)& a few annotated games at the start of each chapter too (usually from crunch time until resignation) It opens your mind to new posivilities & they serve as new chess weapons to players unwary of them.A VERY good book.

The only drawback is that you know with wich piece the combination starts with, wich makes it sometimes too obvious the starting move order. On the 2nd puzzle book by Kasparov this is improved by giving you hints of what the position calls for, so you will have to guess what piece is the one the combo start with.

Excerpt: Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (March 9, 1943 January 17, 2008) was the eleventh World Chess Champion. He is widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Fischer's achievements are legendary. At 13, he won a brilliancy that became known as the Game of the Century. Starting at age 14, he played in eight United States Championships, winning each by at least a point. At 15½, he became both the youngest Grandmaster and the youngest Candidate for the World Championship up until that time. He won the 1963-64 US championship 11-0, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. In the early 1970s he became the most dominant player in modern historywinning the 1970 Interzonal by a record 3½-point margin and winning 20 consecutive games, including two unprecedented 6-0 sweeps in the Candidates Matches. According to research by Jeff Sonas, in 1971 Fischer had separated himself from the rest of the world by a larger margin of playing skill than any player since the 1870s. He became the first official FIDE world number one rated chessplayer in July 1971, and his 54 total months at number one is the third longest of all-time. In 1972, he wrested the World Championship from Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland that was widely publicized as a Cold War battle. Excerpt:Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik (Russian: , pronounced ) (August 17 1911 May 5, 1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion. Working as an electrical engineer at the same time, he was one of the very few famous chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He also developed a chess-playing algorithm that tried to "think" like a top human player, but this approach has been superseded by a brute-force search strategy that exploits the rapid increase in the calculation speed of modern computers. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union (Alekhine was a top player before the Russian Revolution), putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. Botvinnik also played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II and becoming a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. His famous pupils include World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik.
