Left Hander Feb 1999 Traded by the Yankees to the Blue Jays 1994 Topps - For a good portion of his career, David went both ways, sometimes starting and most times laboring in midle-relief. But in 1993 the Tigers used him in the starting rotation 30 times. This seemed to suit David quite well for he began the season with a rush, going 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA. By mid-season he ranked with the best pitchers in the league with a 9-4 mark. A big, burly, hard throwing southpaw, David features a riding 93-mph fastball, a sharp breaking curve, a slinker and a changeup. 1999 Topps Opening Day - David's perfect game of 5/17/98 was the 2nd by an AL LHP.

Perfection Firing a wicked fastball and a snapping curve, the Yankees' David Wells retired 27 straight Twins to complete only the 13th perfect game this century
More Flashbacks
by L. Jon Wertheim Issue date: May 25, 1998 Spend a few nanoseconds around the New York Yankees' hefty lefty, David Wells, and it is abundantly clear that he is a man who embraces convention as lustily as Germans embrace Scientology. In the Yankees' cathedral-like clubhouse, a place that almost demands a respectful silence, Wells blasts AC/DC, Metallica and Styx from his stereo. He counts among his friends various Hell's Angels and Mark Fuhrman, who visited Wells in the Yankees locker room in Seattle in April '97. Never mind his pierced ear and the tattoos of his late mother, Eugenia Ann (Attitude Annie) Wells, and his son, Brandon, that adorn Wells's chest and shoulder, respectively. While his colleagues boast bulging veins on their arms and washboards for stomachs, Wells looks as if he just climbed out of the cab of an 18-wheeler. "It's just the way I am," he says, scratching his hairline, which is climbing into the hinterland of his head. "A little different, I guess."
The popular Wells has always loved Yankee tradition, and after adding to it, he was exhultant.

by Don Malcolm on February 27, 1999 last updated January 25, 2000 Send us feedback on this article Myles McDonnel writes regarding QMAX and the Clemens/Wells Deal: Liked the piece until I saw the end, where you suggested what Gord Ash should have held out for. Clemens and Fletcher for Wells, Posada and Bradley? Are you nuts? There's simply no way the Yanks make that deal, in February, March, or ever. Posada is one of the "almost- untouchable" players on the team (admittedly, with Steinbrenner, no one's completely untouchable); he's an AL catcher who can hit with power and is still getting better every year. Getting Fletcher back for him would be pointless; you might as well just give Posada away. And Bradley is currently considered the prize pitching prospect in the Yanks' system (unless you count the recently acquired Ed Yarnall).
This ain't the '80s no more, and even given Steinbrenner's greed and dopiness, the Yanks don't make trades like that anymore. They didn't NEED to make a deal for Clemens, and the deal happened because Ash made an offer that was too good to refuse. Essentially, Cashman (and Steinbrenner) pulled the trigger because they were able to get Clemens without losing much in the way of their future. If their future had been part of the dealas any deal including Posada and Bradley for veterans would have to be consideredthey would most certainly not have made it. Might as well say Ash should have asked for Wells, Jeter and Mariano Rivera. If your proposed deal had been the final word from Ash, Clemens would still be in Toronto (which, I agree, might have been better for Toronto...).

Cartoons Hooters calendar girl Becky and David Wells Hooters Restaurant, NYC, 11/10/01 Photo by Glyn Emmerson "Delightfully Tacky Yet Unrefined" is the slogan of Hooters, the chain of restaurants where "bird watchers" can drink beer and eat chicken wings amidst all manner of wild life in the form of "flattery operated" waitresses dressed in tiny orange jogging shorts and even tinier owl-emblazoned tank tops. What better place then to combine "bird watching" with our nation's other pastime. No, not reality television, but baseball. Hooters calendar girls Hooters Restaurant, NYC, 11/10/01 Photo by Glyn Emmerson Of course, the gaggle of gorgeous calendar gals (back-cover babe Becky from Sarasota, in particular) was seamlessly easy on the senses. At one point I wondered "what smells so good?" only to turn around and find them coming up behind me for the check presentation ceremony. But, clearly the rowdy working class crowd also filled Hooters to get a glimpse and maybe a high-five with David Wells, a hard-throwing, harder-living throwback to old-time baseball, not to mention all-time all-stars like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, who wore their hangovers as proudly as their pinstripes. Though an autographed calendar went for only $10, since the event was for charity, anyone who wanted a one-on-one with Wells had to dig deeper into their pockets of compassion. Autographed baseballs were clocking in at a fast $50 each. And the big-ticket souvenir was the Perfect Game Package which at $250 included a Beanie Baby, game ticket and game ball.

Claremont McKenna College Mourns Death of
Former Coach and Athletic Director David Wells CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA-David Lloyd Wells, 50, former Athletic Director and head men's basketball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, has died following a long battle with cancer. Wells died July 2 at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Arizona, while in the area to attend a baseball tournament. Wells is survived by his wife, Jodie Burton (head women's basketball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps), three sons, John, Todd, and Michael; his father and step-mother, John F. and Lois Wells of Sonoma; three brothers, James, Farmington, Timothy, Burbank, and Robert, Albany; two sisters, Mary Wells Cutone, Burbank, and Jane Wells, Vancouver, Washington; and hundreds of student athletes who competed with, for, and against Wells during his 32 years with CMS athletics. David's mother, Mary Elizabeth Wells, died in 1974. David and Jodie were the only husband-wife team to coach NCAA basketball on the same campus. Memorial arrangements are pending and will be announced by the College.

Home About CMC Admission Administration ... Gateways A Hero Remembered Longtime CMS coach David Wells is eulogized for his heroism, and for his commitment to sports and family By Alissa Sandford These and other memories of the former athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, were shared with family, friends, and members of the community on Saturday, July 14 at memorial services for Wells, 50, who died earlier this month in Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his wife, Jodie Burton (head women's basketball coach for CMS); three sons, John, Todd, and Michael; his father and stepmother, John F. and Lois Wells of Sonoma, Calif.; and hundreds of student athletes who competed with, for, and against Wells during his 32 years with CMS athletics. "And maybe (that loss) was fitting because David had lost his own battle while he was with us," Edwards said of Wells' six-year battle with cancer. Guest musician George Allan, on bagpipe, led family and friends in a recessional to the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, where reception guests reminisced and enjoyed David Wells' favorite Motown hits. After his tracheotomy, Wells wrote on a yellow notepad, as his trademark voice failed. Tim Wells recounted how once during a cancer support group meeting, David had asked a member to read something he had written. It said: "I just had one of the most wonderful moments of my life, standing on the ladder and cutting down the net with my wife."
