Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Lovable Ruth was everyone's Babe
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
Babe Ruth's popularity and fame were so widespread that even America's enemies knew of him. Almost a decade after he had bashed his last home run, his presence still was felt. Babe Ruth's record of 60 homers in 1927 stood up for 34 years. During World War II, when Japanese soldiers charged American troops, they would sometimes scream, "To hell with Babe Ruth." Not "to hell with FDR" or "to hell with Douglas MacArthur," but "to hell with Babe Ruth." What bigger compliment could an American receive? Ruth was a man of mythic proportions. He became even more than the ultimate American sports celebrity. He was "a unique figure in the social history of the United States," wrote Robert Creamer in Babe: The Legend Comes to Life . "For more than any other man, Babe Ruth transcended sports, moved far beyond the artificial limits of baselines and outfield fences and sports pages." The New York Times called Enrico Caruso "the Babe Ruth of operatic tenors" and Time magazine called Willie Sutton "the Babe Ruth of bank robbers." And even another sports icon was compared to him when Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf called Michael Jordan "the Babe Ruth of basketball."

69. The Sultan Of Swat, George Herman Babe Ruth
babe ruth's legacy went well beyond baseball statistics. ruth was so well paid bythe end of his career, that he helped increase the salaries of all players.
http://www.baseballhistorian.com/html/babe_ruth.htm
George Herman 'Babe' Ruth was one of the most phenomenally gifted and well-liked baseball players who ever lived. According to histori See Babe Hit New York Daily News Photos ans and baseball writers, "Ruth was a presence of mythic proportions. When he was pitching for the Boston Red Sox, he was one of the best left-handers the game has ever known." Because of his awesome abilities as a hitter, base runner and fielder, Ruth was converted to a outfielder-pitcher in 1918. He was sold to the New York Yankees in 1920. Again, historians note, "Ruth was the outstanding outfielder of his time and he single-handedly changed baseball and its economics forever. Ruth possessed a strong, rapid throwing arm, he could beat any of his teammates in a foot race and was the greatest home run hitter who ever lived." Babe Ruth's legacy went well beyond baseball statistics. Ruth was so well paid by the end of his career, that he helped increase the salaries of all players. When he made $80,000 in 1930, someone pointed out to him he earned more than the President of the United States (Hoover), Ruth replied, "So What?. I had a better year than he did."

September 23, 2002
White House photo by Paul Morse WASHINGTON, D.C.Cal Ripken served as baseball's unofficial ambassador during his 21 seasons with the Orioles. A year after his retirement, he continues to carry the mantle. Ripken's approach focuses on building the game at the grassroots level. He has purchased a team in the short-season New York-Penn League, broken ground on a youth baseball training facility in Aberdeen, Md., and had Babe Ruth Baseball's Bambino Division named after him in the last year. Ripken was at it again Sunday, this time with a tee ball game on the White House's South Lawn. "To me it's the ultimate celebration of baseball," Ripken said. "How great is it to come to the White House South Lawn and play? It's a festive time and a celebration of baseball."

JACKIE MITCHELL
Pitcher Chattanooga Lookouts, 1931
In the spring of 1931, Joe Engel, owner of the Southern Association's AA Chattanooga Lookouts, signed 17-year-old pitcher Jackie Mitchell. The Chattanooga papers were full of stories about the first woman to ever play in the minor leagues. (Jackie Mitchell was actually the second woman to sign a minor-league contract. In 1898, Lizzie Arlington played one game, pitching for Reading (PA) against Allentown.) On April 2 of that year, the New York Yankees stopped in Chattanooga for an exhibition game, on their way home from spring training down south. A crowd of 4,000 came to watch, including scores of reporters, wire services, and even a newsreel camera. Manager Bert Niehoff started the game with Clyde Barfoot, but after Barfoot gave up a double and a single, the manager signaled for Jackie Mitchell. The rookie southpaw took the mound wearing a baggy white uniform that had been custom-made by the Spalding Company. The first batter she faced was Babe Ruth. Jackie only had one pitch, a wicked, dropping curve ball. Ruth took ball one, and then swung at and missed the next two pitches. Jackie's fourth pitch caught the corner of the plate, the umpire called it a strike, and Babe Ruth "kicked the dirt, called the umpire a few dirty names, gave his bat a wild heave, and stomped out to the Yank's dugout."

compiled by A.S. Kaswell, AIR staff Baseball fans who are cool to psychology and psychologists who disdain the sport of the little hardball can still agree that " Why Babe Ruth is Greatest Home-Run Hitter " is a worthy piece of research. Written by Hugh S. Fullerton in 1921, and published in Popular Science Monthly (vol. 99, no. 4 pp., 19-21), it is still provocative. Here is the beginning of the article: The game was over. Babe, who had made one of his famous drives that day, was tired and wanted to go home. "Not tonight, Babe," I said. "Tonight you go to college with me. You're going to take scientific tests which will reveal your secret." "Who wants to know it?" asked Babe. "I want to know it," I replied, "and so do several hundred thousand fans. We want to know why it is that one man has achieved a unique batting skill like yours just why you can slam the ball as nobody else in the world can." So away we went. Babe in his baseball uniform, not home to his armchair, but out to Columbia University to take his first college examination.

The BASEBALL RELIQUARY Inc Babe Ruth Sacristy Box Babe Ruth was such an incomparable figure in the annals of American sport that author Donald Honig once remarked that had the Bambino not lived, it would have been impossible to invent him. The Baseball Reliquary's collection of Ruth artifacts includes a partially smoked cigar and a sacristy box used by a priest from St. Patrick's Cathedral to administer last sacraments of the Catholic Church to a gravely ill Babe Ruth at New York's Memorial Hospital on the evening of July 21, 1948. Remarkably, Ruth, who was dying of cancer, recovered overnight, and the next morning he joked with a friend, "Say, were you here yesterday when I nearly kicked the bucket?" In fact, the Babe felt well enough to leave the hospital on the evening of July 26 to attend the world premiere of his screen autobiography, The Babe Ruth Story , at New York's Astor Theater. Before the film was over, however, Ruth fell ill and had to return to the hospital. Ruth's condition steadily deteriorated and he fell into a coma at approximately 7:00 p.m. on August 16, 1948, a priest gave him a final blessing at 7:30, and he expired at 8:01 p.m. The funeral was on August 19 at St. Patrick's Cathedral with Cardinal Spellman presiding at the Requiem Mass. It was a very hot day in New York, and among the pallbearers were the Bambino's former Yankee teammates Joe Dugan and Waite Hoyt. "Christ," Dugan whispered, licking his dry lips, "I'd give a hundred bucks for a cold beer." Hoyt, nodding at the coffin, whispered back, "So would the Babe." The sacristy box was obtained by a former New York Yankees executive shorly after the funeral, and it remained in his family for many years.
