Before 1918, the Boston Red Sox were unstoppable. They won World Series after World Series, thanks in part to their charismatic pitcher-slugger Babe Ruth. But some people on the Red Sox felt the Babe was more trouble than he was worth, and he was traded away to one of the worst teams in baseball, the New York Yankees. From then on, the Yankees became a golden team. And the Red Sox? For over 80 years, they just couldn’t win another World Series. Then, in 2004, along came a scruffy, scrappy Red Sox team. Could they break Babe Ruth’s curse and win it all? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story and message for readers of any age
Boys and girls who like baseball--or comeback stories--will enjoy this tale of Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox. The story of Babe Ruth and his history with both the Red Sox and the New York Yankees -- and the ups and downs of both teams from 1915 to 2004 -- is told in a fresh and engaging way. The successes of Ruth and the teams are pegged to qualities that anyone can benefit from--taking responsibility for one's actions, working hard and being persistent can reap huge rewards, believing in one's abilities, staying positive. A very enjoyable and informative read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for the die-hard baseball fan or the casual reader.
Going, going, gone!Aaron Boone's "walk-off" homer won the game for the Yankees. It was 2003 and they were going to the World Series again.Anyone who knows baseball knows the disappointment of that game for the Red Sox.It has been rumored that ever since they traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920 they'd been jinxed. They say that the "Red Sox were doomed to fail because of Babe Ruth and the baseball curse."No kidding!

George Herman Ruth wasn't the luckiest kid in the world. He was so much trouble he got sent away to St. Mary's, a school mostly for orphans and "incorrigible" kids like "Babe."The only thing good about it was that Brother Matthias taught him to play baseball and eventually he signed on with the Sox.He still acted like a kid and claimed he could "burp louder than a tractor."Even if he was kind of childish acting, he was considered to be one of the best pitchers in the world and was getting to be pretty hot in the hitting department. He still was a rule breaker (so what!?) and he was asking a lot of money. Solution?Sell him to the Yankees. It was the start of the "Curse of the Bambino."

And perhaps you know the rest of the story. This is a great story of Babe Ruth, wild and crazy, full of fun and smooth.David Kelly has a real page turning hit here. There are lots of stats for the avid young fan to digest, but even if the reader isn't a die-hard baseball fan the story has a great flow and is fun to read.Did Lee Gavin really break that curse? You'll just have to decide for yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cool book
Love that book!I like how there is so much detail. I like that you had a fact sheet at the end with a picture of babe Ruth. I like that you made it about babe and him saving baseball. Babe is my favorite player. When you had to look up facts about him I bet took really hard. You are my favorite author. And you are my fourth grade teacher.I like a lot of your books. But this is the #1 book that I like.

5-0 out of 5 stars for a baseball lover
I love the book Babe Ruth Saves Baseball. It is one of my favorite books in the world. It is so sublime. I prefer it for a young reader. It is one of Frank Murphy's best books in my opinion. I never knew Babe Ruth saved baseball by hitting homers. And, by the way, Mr. Murphy is my teacher!

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK!!!
I love this book!I love how the author makes Babe come alive for kids.I am a teacher and have read this book to my class. All of my students loved hearing it and have read it again and again. We really felt like we got to know Babe and looked up to him so much more than we already did!!!Frank Murphy does an excellent job telling the sad story of baseball and how it did almost die, but heleaves the reader feeling very positive and inspired to be their own kind of hero!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why do kids need to know that baseball players cheated ?
I am very disappointed with this book.I was really hoping for a children's book that I could use to introduce my 8 year son to Babe Ruth. But, instead, I read a book that refers to baseball players and cheating. In the end, I will never read this book to my son. In my opinion, young children do not need to be introduced to the concept of baseball players cheating. My suggestion, publish a book that highlights Babe Ruth's accomplishments as a world series pitcher that becomes baseball's home run legend.I do not recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My First Mystery
I first read this book when I was about 7 years old, and it started a lifelong interest in mystery stories.I practically squealed with joy when I found it again at the library recently.

The story is pretty simple, but it really encourages kids to think as they try to solve the clues to the mystery along with the heroine, Meg.Meg is visiting her grandfather when he tells her about a sort of treasure hunt that his cousin, Alice, created for him years ago that he was never able to solve. Alice took his prized possession, a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and refused to tell him where it was.Instead, she left him a series of clues leading to the place where it is hidden.Although her grandfather was unable to find the answers to any of the clues, Meg is determined to solve the mystery and find the baseball. To add to the challenge, Meg's brother is also trying to solve the mystery, and she is trying to find the baseball before he does.At each stage of the mystery, the book asks readers to consider the clues Meg finds and to study the pictures to find the answers before turning the page to find out what Meg's conclusions are.

All the clues in the treasure hunt are based upon popular nursery rhymes, which kids can easily recognize. From personal experience, I know that kids are impressed when they realize that they know enough to figure out the meanings of the clues on their own. This is a good book for kids in early elementary school, especially ones who enjoy mysteries and puzzles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from an 11 year old Catholic homeschooler
The book "Babe Ruth One of Baseball's Greatest" is a spectacular 5 star book. It tells of George Ruth from age 7 till his death. It depicths him at St.Marys school, where he first learned Baseball. It's where he won his first Championship and the academy game. At that game a Baltimore Baseball scout saw him pitch and was amazed, he reported about George to the owner of the Baltimore Oriels. One afternoon George and his friend Rod were having a catch. George was pitching, Rod was catching when they saw a man walking with the brothers who run the school. They called George in, theman was the Baltimore Oriels manager and he wanted George to play for them. This is where he got the name Babe since he was so young. Thus the career of Babe Ruth began. If you love Baseball and it's heroes you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent biography about the Babe ~ a natural page turner!

Babe Ruth was one of a kind, a man difficult to deal with as a colleague, yet adored by the masses. It was even reported that a man "died from `excitement' while watching Babe Ruth at bat in 1920."He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in a neighborhood called "Pigtown," along with seven siblings, only one other, his sister Mary survived.Things weren't easy when he was a youngster. His mother died of exhaustion at the age of 39 and he was sent to St. Mary's where he learned tailoring and, best of all, learned the game of baseball from Brother Matthias.

Babe was the kind of kid who was nothing but trouble from the get-go, but his sports ability would take him far.Jack Dunn, talent scout of the Orioles signed him on to play ball and the rest is history. When he was sent to Boston he tended to be an annoying show-off and "his Red Sox teammates did not much care for him," but the man could play ball.He could whack the ball out of the park when homeruns were merely an oddity. His behavior wasn't going to change and at one point he even hit an umpire.Going, going, gone. . .he was sold to the Yankees.

Reform wasn't exactly Babe's middle name.Yankee Stadium may have been "The House That Ruth Built," but even after the Yankees won the World Series for the second time, all those promises he made to himself he "was once again drinking heavily, eating gluttonously, and spending money on extravagant amusements."Was Babe Ruth ever going to change?

This is an excellent young adult baseball biography that would even interest an adult audience. It was well researched and the smooth flow of the book held my attention, making it a natural page turner. There are numerous photographs, sidebars, statistics, tributes from fans, a chronology, timeline, an excellent glossary, a bibliography an index and further recommended reading resources and web sites.Say, do you really believe he "called shot" in the 1932 World Series? ... Product Description

This brief but readable biography tells the story of the most recognized figure in baseball—Babe Ruth. Besides vividly describing the highlights of Ruth's career, author Wayne Stewart examines the unprecedented impact Ruth had on the nature and future of the game. Ruth's ability to hit the long ball and the flamboyance of his off-field persona infused the game with a new excitement that rescued baseball from the negative effects of the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Making extensive use of interviews conducted by the author with members of Ruth's family and with players who knew Ruth, this biography is an engaging exploration of how Ruth helped shape modern baseball.
