Move Over Jimmie Foxx
By Larry Crino
The most wonderful images accompanying a man’s rewriting the baseball history books are of the men whose marks he’s eclipsing along the way. As Mark McGwire passes the legendary Jimmie Foxx and ties the legendary Mickey Mantle on the career home run list in one day, I am compelled to recall the day Mickey Mantle passed Jimmie Foxx in 1968, a year after Foxx’s death. Mickey was in the last few days of his magnificent career, and his Yankees were out of the race. Mickey and the Yanks were in Detroit facing the eventual world-champion Tigers and 30-game winner Denny McLain. The Tigers were safely ahead in McLain’s 31 st win, and McLain had his All-Star catcher, Bill Freehan, let Mickey know what was coming. McLain threw Mickey a fastball with a bow tied around it and Mickey parked it in the right field grandstand at Tiger Stadium and fought his way around the bases for No. 535, his next-to-last homer. It was an NBC baseball moment I’ll never forget as long as I live. Denny McLain did some classy things before embarking upon his accomplished career in racketeering and embezzlement.

Jimmie Foxx biography
James Emory Foxx was born in Sudlersville, Maryland on October 22, 1907. At the age of 10, Foxx ran away from home and attempted to enlist in the Army as a drummer boy. When the Army rejected him, he then turned his attention to sports. He was a member of his high school baseball team and played various positions that later helped him in his major league career. Frank Baker, who was managing Easton in the Maryland Eastern Shore League was impressed with Foxx's power and ability. Baker asked Foxx to come to a tryout. Foxx had to get his father's permission to quit school and go to Easton. He had hoped to play third base or to pitch but Easton was short on catchers and placed him behind the plate instead. Foxx was a success from the start. His skills drew the interest of the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics. Baker advised Foxx to play for Connie Mack and the A's. Foxx was just 17 when he entered the major league. Mack already had Mickey Cochrane and Cy Perkins as catchers so Foxx was on the bench in 1924. In 1925, he spent most of the season at Providence. By 1929, the A's placed Foxx at first base. The A's won three straight American League pennants after that. In 1932, Foxx belted in 58 home runs and won the first of 3 Most Valuable Player awards. The following year he won the Triple Crown with a batting average of .356, 163 RBIs, and 48 home runs. He also won his second Most Valuable Player award in 1933. Foxx refused to sign a new contract with the A's following the 1935 season after a salary dispute. Mack then sold Foxx to the Boston Red Sox for $150,000.

The Memorial Field Dedication
August 8, 2000

Lakewood City Council Dear Friends, One of the joys of living in a small town is that there is a keen awareness of the contributions made by its residents. For any number of reasons, Lakewood is unique among Greater Cleveland's suburbs in that, despite its size, the city retains a small town atmosphere. It is important that Lakewood continue to recognize the contributions its residents have made whether they be in service to their country, government, education, the arts, entertainment or athletics. By recognizing those individuals, it helps each of us put into perspective our own actions and deeds, as humbling as that may be. Recognizing those individuals gives the community and each one of us a sense of dignity and pride, traits that are often lost in today's world. Finally, it lets neighbors and friends know that we care about and appreciate one another. On behalf of the citizens of the City of Lakewood, it is with great pleasure that we dedicate the baseball field at Kauffman Park in honor of Jimmie Foxx who, after retiring from professional baseball, chose to raise his family here, unselfishly volunteered his time on Lakewood's sandlot baseball fields, and who blessed us with his humanity. Sincerely

John Holway Other Leagues (Ladies Leagues) MORE PEPPER TALES: BEER AND CHMPAGNE WITH JIMMIE FOXX By John B. Holway In 1952 we had a great ball club. We had the remarkable Weaver sisters Jean, Joanne, and Betty Foss, her married name. Fossie played leftfield and hit .400-something; no one had done that in our league before. She ws built like a a man, very strong and big; she could have competed in a man's league. I don't mean she acted like a man she was a good-looking gal and married. But you threw a high pitch, she could reach up and club that ball. And she could run. Jimmie Foxx was our manager. At that time he had hit more home runs than anyone except Babe Ruth. He had arms like tree trunks. When he took hitting practice, he put two two girls in front of the pitcher to protect her, cleared the infield, and hit the ball on a line, maybe four feet off the ground, and it just atayed that high all the way to the outfield. He'd hit a ball once, you'd pick it up, it was flat. Jimmie was 44 years old then. If the majors had had a DH rule, I'm sure he could have stayed in the big leagues longer. There's a lot of similarities between Foxx and the character Tom Hanks played in the movie, "A League of Their Own." Jimmie was a great guy, he just wasn't into coaching girls. And he was not too happy about being out of Organized Ball, even if he had himself to blame.
