Excerpt: James Emory "Jimmie" Foxx (October 22, 1907 July 21, 1967) (nicknamed Double X and The Beast) was a right-handed American first baseman and noted power hitter in Major League Baseball. Foxx was the second major league player to hit 500 career home runs, after Babe Ruth; and, at age 32 years 336 days, is the second youngest to reach that mark, behind Alex Rodriguez. His three career Most Valuable Player awards are tied for second all-time. Born in Sudlersville, Maryland, Foxx played baseball in high school and dropped out to join a minor league team managed by former Philadelphia Athletics great Frank "Home Run" Baker. Foxx had hoped to pitch or play third base, but since the team was short on catchers, Foxx moved behind the plate. He immediately drew interest from the rangers and New York Yankees. Foxx signed with the A's and made his major league debut in 1925 at age 17. The A's catching duties were already filled by future Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane, so by 1927, Foxx was splitting time between catching, first base, and the outfield. In 1929, installed as the A's regular first baseman, Foxx had a breakthrough year, batting .354 and hitting 33 home runs. In 1932, Foxx hit .364, with 58 home runs with 169 RBIs, missing the Triple Crown by just 3 points in batting average. Boston Red Sox first baseman Dale Alexander hit .367, but in just 454 plate appearances; he would not have won the batting title under current rules, which are based upon 3.1 plate appearances per team games played. Foxx did win the Triple Crown the following season, with a batting average of .356, 163 RBIs, and 48 home runs. He won back-to-back MVP honors in 1932 and 1933. Foxx was one of the three or four most feared sluggers of his era. The great Yankee pitcher Lefty Go... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=158191 ... Read more

Product Description
In February 1925, 17-year-old Jimmie Foxx left his home in Sudlersville, Maryland, and joined the Philadelphia Athletics in spring training. Over the next twenty years, Foxx was one of the most consistent stars in the majors. His long home runs were legendary—his 535 were second only to Babe Ruth’s 714 when he retired in 1945. Only six years later, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Foxx tried his hand at a variety of jobs after he left baseball, but seemed always to be drawn back to the game. He coached and managed in the minor leagues and even managed the Fort Wayne Daisies of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1953. This is the story of Foxx’s rise to glory, his life in and out of the game, and his love affair with the national pastime. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Enigmatic Slugger...Enigmatic Read
Well, I read the book. That is all that I can honestly say.The book just never had imagination or anything that one would expect from a superstar of Foxx's stature and lore. This was like reading a Grade 8 assignment.Structure and content are terribly lacking.A subject loaded with plenty of history and ammunition, yet it looks as though the book was put together piece by piece with not a clue where to begin or end.The only break for the author is that Foxx had a historical abstract that indicated beginning and end to his career. At least the author stayed in that timeframe.Too good a subject for such a poor and lacadasical effort. Two stars is too generous, but the statistics carry the book.Such a shame!

4-0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD READ
THIS BOOK IS A WELL WRITTEN STORY ABOUT THE MARK MCGWIRE OF HISTIME. AN INTERESTING AND SAD STORY ABOUT AN INCREDIBLY STRONG MAN, PHYSICALLY BUT NOT EMOTIONALLY. THE AUTHOR DOES A GOOD JOBDESCRIBING HIS GREAT CAREER AND HIS VERY SAD LIFE OUTSIDE OF BASEBALL. JIMMIE FOXX WAS A VERY MODEST MAN. ALCOHOL TOOK ALOT OF HIS GOODNESS AWAY AND COST HIM JOB AFTER JOB. JIMMIE FOXX IS A HERO TO ME. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB OF SHOWING HOW HUMAN THIS MAN WAS. A BOOK THAT MUST BE READ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent "just the facts" biography one of baseball's best
I realy enjoyed this book about baseball's forgotten hero. One of baseball's best hitters, Jimmie Foxx life after baseball was tragic. The author uses extensive research throughout to present the basic facts of the career of Jimmie Foxx--from the young farmboy from Easton, Maryland to his superb career with the Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies. The one weakness in the book, though understandable, was the lack of development of the relationship between Foxx and his Hall of Fame teammates such as Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, and Lefty Grove. Writing a book about a man who was forgotten from the world of baseball fifty years after his career ended was no easy feat. It is truly unfortunate that this book wasn't written in the 1960's when Foxx was still alive and most of his peers were still around to lend insight and develop the relationships that he had between teammates and opponent ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
Finally Mark Millikin's biography, "Jimmie Foxx: The pride of Sudlersville," brings Mr. Foxx the recognition he richly deserves as one of baseball's all-time greatest home run sluggers and one of baseball's best first basemen. This book makes the case that Foxx and Lou Gehrig who played against each other in the 1920's and 1930s were very similar in overall batting and playing ability. This fact is lost in most baseball books, especially the ones written about Gehrig. Some players who played against both Foxx and Gehrig told Millikin that they rated the two star sluggers about even, while others gave a slight nod to Foxx over Gehrig or Gehrig over Foxx.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This book has detail about Foxx that has never appeared anywhere before except possibly contemporary newspapers. Foxx's minor league career, largely ignored by previous biographers, is treated extensively. A compelling treatment of the life of a Hall of Famer who hasn't received as much publicity as many players of lesser talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there on Double X
A very informative book. It covers his childhood until his death. Mostlyit covers his major league career of 20 years but covers his childhood inMaryland with lots of good details too. However, after his playing years(20+ years) is covered rarely quickly in about 20 pages. It was wellwritten, but sometimes had too much game by game details and stats. Is thisbook worth the 40.00 price tag? No, and I'm a huge Foxx fan. Cut the pricein half or wait for the softback edition to come out, and save yourself25.00 bucks. A few pictures in the book that are average-nothingspectacular.
