Average Customer Review: Baseball Records, Feats and Top 10 Lists Scroll Down to See Entire Page Top 10 Lists
The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes. Batting Categories: Hits/Avg, Doubles/2B%, Triples/3B%, HomeRuns/HR%, StrikeOuts/SO%, Walks/BB%, Runs/RBI, StolenBases/SB%, TotalBases/SLG%, RunsCreated/OPS%

Jimmie Foxx was a catcher when Frank "Home Run" Baker discovered him playing in Maryland. Since Mickey Cochrane was the Philadelphia A's backstop, Foxx moved to first base - and he stayed there, becoming the second-best first baseman of all time, behind Lou Gehrig At bat, Foxx presented a menacing picture. A strong, powerful man, he held the bat at the end and stood fairly deep in the batter's box, using a wide stance and a full stride into the ball. As the pitch approached, his powerful arm muscles flexed visibly before he hit the ball. Like many sluggers, Foxx struck out often, and he led the AL seven times. The three-time MVP and two-time batting champion became the second man in history to hit five-hundred plus home runs. Foxx led the league in slugging percentage 5 times, and he is 4th all time in career slugging percentage. He is 6th all time in RBI with 1921. He is tied with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for the record of most seasons with 100 or more RBI with 13.

Career Batting Record Foxx was 6-foot and 195 pounds, but he seemed bigger, probably because he could hit the ball so far. He joined the AL's Philadelphia Athletics in 1925 as a catcher, but didn't play much during his first few seasons because Philadelphia already had the best catcher in baseball, Mickey Cochrane. In his infrequent appearances, Foxx showed that he could hit, and in 1929 he became Philadelphia's starting first baseman. He hit .354 with 33 home runs and 117 RBI. It was the first in a record streak of twelve years in which he hit 30 or more home runs and drove in 100 or more runs. Foxx had a .335 average with 37 home runs and 156 RBI in 1930, then batted .291 with 30 homers and 120 RBI in 1931, as the Athletics won their third straight pennant. In their three World Series appearances, Foxx hit .344, with 4 home runs, 11 runs scored, and 11 RBI. Philadelphia owner-manager Connie Mack began to dismantle the team in 1932 because of financial problems. The Athletics started to slide, but Foxx didn't. He led the AL with 58 home runs and 169 RBI, batting .364. Foxx lost two home runs that were hit in games called by rain before they became official, which kept him from tying Babe Ruth's famous record of 60 in a season. He was also deprived of the triple crown because the batting title was awarded to Dale Alexander, even though Alexander didn't have the required 400 at-bats for the season.

Lanham, MD 20706
PH: 1-800-462-6420 Larger Image Through the use of contemporary newspaper and magazine accounts, plus interviews with family members, former teammates and opponents, author Mark Millikin has prepared the definitive work on Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. Considered to be one of the top right-handed sluggers of all time, the biography of Foxx begins in Sudlersville, a small town on the eastern shore of Maryland. A detailed look at Foxx's childhood reveals that young Jim began showing his extraordinary baseball skills at age 13. Former major league star Frank "Home Run" Baker, a native to eastern Maryland, signed Foxx to his first professional contract in 1924 with Easton of the Eastern Shore League. Just 16 years old, Foxx, a catcher, was a success in the field and at the plate. During the same season, Foxx's contract was purchased by Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics and, one year later in 1925, the 17-year old was in the big leagues. Unable to unseat the great Mickey Cochrane as the Athletics' starting catcher, Foxx was switched to first base where he enjoyed enormous success. In 1929, the slugger began a run of 12 consecutive seasons in which he hit 30 or more home runs. Interspersed amongst that streak were five years of 40 or more homers and two years with 50 and 58. Foxx's roundtrippers not only came frequently but also traveled great distance.

More headlines No. 38: JIMMIE FOXX Foxx and Sox were good match By Steve Richards, Globe Staff, 11/24/99 t had to have been among the most imposing sights in baseball: Jimmie Foxx, one of the most powerful righthanded hitters in history, standing at the plate in Fenway Park, with the Green Monster looming a mere 300 feet away down the left-field line. The prospect so enticed Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey in 1935, two years after he bought the team, that he swung a deal with Connie Mack to bring the Philadelphia A's slugger to Boston for the '36 season. In anticipation, Yawkey had a 23-foot screen installed atop the Wall to keep some of the home run balls from sailing onto Lansdowne Street. Foxx, who is No. 38 on the Globe's list of the top New England sports figures of the century, did not disappoint.

Hubbell gets 5 stars for this striking performance
Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons and Cronin go down swinging By Bob Ryan, Globe Staff, 07/11/99 There were six doubles, two triples, and two home runs. There were 26 runs scored. There was a six-run inning. There was even the classic exhibition game circumstance of a man (Billy Herman) pinch hitting in the third inning, retiring back to the bench, and then being allowed back into the game four innings later in time to lash out a double. Aside from direct descendants and particularly obsessed members of The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), no one remembers any of that. There is only one thing people recall about the 1934 All-Star Game, and that is Carl Hubbell and his unforgettable run of strikeouts. Classic baseball folklore includes Bobby Thomson's home run, The Babe calling his shot, Mickey Owen missing the third strike, and Pudge Fisk whacking one off the foul pole. It includes Don Larsen's perfect game and Bill Mazeroski's homer. In the All-Star Game, it most certainly includes Ted Williams's homer off Claude Passeau and Pete Rose bowling over Ray Fosse at home plate. But in terms of All-Star Game pitching feats, there is one standing far, far apart from all others. On July 10, 1934, in the Polo Grounds, the National League's Carl Hubbell wrote himself some baseball history by striking out the final three men of the first inning and the first two of the second. Any self-respecting baseball historian knows the names by heart, and almost invariably rattles them off so quickly it's as if the five men had one name: Ruthgehrigfoxxsimmonscronin.

Jimmie Foxx was one of Baseball's all-time great power hitters. The slugging first baseman belted 534 home runs over 20 seasons, hitting 30 or more a record 12 successive seasons. Double-X walloped 58 for the A's in 1932, only to miss Babe Ruth's mark when rain erased two others. He won the Triple Crown the following year when he repeated as MVP. Foxx had a 50-homer season with the Red Sox in 1938, but Hank Greenberg's 58 cost him a second Triple Crown.

Richard Nixon's Letter to Jimmie Foxx's daughter President Richard Nixon was known to have drawn up an 'enemies' list during his presidency, but he also made an extremely well-thought out list of who he considered the greatest baseball players of all-time. A week before the Watergate break-in, in 1972, President Richard Nixon sat down with his son-in-law, David Eisenhower and picked what he thought were the greatest players in history. When they had chosen those players, the President had a gold booklet made up that named his picks. His choice as the greatest first baseman pre-World War II was the "The Beast" Jimmie Foxx, the slugging Philadelphia A's first baseman. Foxx died in the mid-1960s. This is the letter from Nixon to Foxx's daughter, Nancy Canaday, informing her that he had chosen her father as baseball's best first baseman.
