Guests Logon Account Signup Lance Armstrong, Performance Enhancing Drugs, and Deion Sanders's Retirement By Brian Carnell Tuesday, July 31, 2001 This weekend I happened to run across ABC News doing a brief bit about Lance Armstrong winning his third straight Tour de France. Of course they couldn't leave the topic without mentioning long-standing suspicions that Armstrong uses performance enhancing drugs. ABC falsely reported that Armstrong had flat-out said he doesn't use such drugs. But they were running clips from an interview in which Armstrong never actually says, "no, I don't use performance enhancing drugs," but rather dances around the issue by noting he's passed all his drug tests, he can look his family in the eye, etc. He's so good, that I don't think it would really matter whether he is or not (I doubt drugs can give him such a huge advantage in quantities that won't show up in a drug tests). But the thing I found strange was the cycling world's position on cortisone it's banned, except in very small amounts, by the Tour de France and other races. In fact the press freaked a few years ago when Armstrong tested positive for very small amounts of cortisone he'd used a cortisone cream to treat a minor injury, and the level in his system was only about 8 percent of the maximum level.

While watching Chris McAlister (#21) of the Baltimore Ravens make his way into the NFL record books with his 108 yard field goal return to stun the Broncos, dancing and high-stepping his way down the sideline on his way to the endzone, I felt a lump grow in my throat and felt a tear coming to my eye. I had to do a double take at the TV screen, was that...no, could that have been...no way! Images of the greatest cover corner danced in my head as McAlister made a very Deionesque jaunt to the endzone. That's right. McAlister on prime-time TV made a play that conjured up memories of "Prime Time" himself, Deion Sanders. You either loved him, or you hated him. There was no in-between. However, he may have been the most captivating athlete of his era. If you loved him it was for the way he taunted his opponents and riled up the crowd, the way he danced and celebrated after every score and big play, the flashiness, the gold and jewelry, the self promotion, the rap CD, and all of the great sound bites that were provided during his tenure in football. Dan Rather "Our job is to is put the best foot forward for CBS," said Rich Valenza , CBS Sports' "stylist" for apparel. "But we don't want to take away from personalities." Neither does CBS Sports President Sean McManus , who found Sanders "unbelievably good" on TV over the years and says he's "unbelievably serious" about his budding TV career. Which is good for CBS, because McManus says the studio show faces "an almost insurmountable battle. It's increasingly evident we need contemporary star power to be competitive." Competitive, that is, in a novel TV sports venue. Usually, big-time TV sports amounts to writing checks to get exclusive TV rights to events, then hoping the events become compelling. But NFL pregame shows constitute that rare area where networks, competing head-to-head, must rely on their creativity. Because many viewers gravitate to pregame shows on the channels that also carry their NFL home teams, CBS is handicapped: Its AFC TV package has teams in only two of the U.S.'s top-10 TV markets.

On the diamond, Deion is a real gem By Joe Posnanski, Kansas City Star As is customary for this time of year, Chain of Lakes Ballpark in Winter Haven plays host to the humidity chapter of the Florida Mosquito and Gnat Foundation. There are so many little flying bugs that the air looks dark, and ballplayers wave their gloves in front of their faces. They slap at the backs of their necks. They do little bug-dodging dances. Multimillion-dollar heartthrobs prance around like your Uncle Bob at a family picnic. Somehow, Cincinnati center fielder Deion Sanders still looks cool. "Don't even notice the bugs," he says. "I'm here to hit. Let me hit. Give me a bat. I'm hitting." I love this guy. Deion the baseball player. You know about the football player, the high-stepping, big-talking, rap-singing defensive back who hates to tackle, the gold chain collection who chases money the way Jimmy Carville chases Kenneth Starr, the two-nickname hype hound who always carries a spare spotlight, in case the one on him burns out. That's football.
