In the 39-year-old Hong Kong director's previous films of the decade Days of Being Wild Ashes of Time Chungking Express and Fallen Angels characters divulge their feelings only in voiceovers, remaining pensive, solitary and gorgeous to the end. Extractions: Opens Fri Feb 16 at Harvard Exit. At the end of Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels , we find two lovers on a motorbike, racing through an underground tunnel. Suddenly everything hits slow-motion and we sense that something is up ahead. What is it? Are they about to break out into the open country? No, the lovers break out into a financial district with a crop of corporate headquarters rising hazily up into the morning twilight. What is significant about this scene is that the city vs. country binary order and its related formations (evil/good, closed/open, dirty/ clean) are rejected, and as a consequence, Hong Kong (unlike the New York of Taxi Driver ) is never questioned, doubted, viewed as a problem that must be corrected. Like Fallen Angels , Wong Kar-wai's new film, In the Mood for Love , which is set in Hong Kong in 1962, takes place in closed spaces, narrow streets, steamy basement restaurants, shared apartments, and low-ceilinged offices. Yet not once during the sensuous course of the film do we feel claustrophobic or the terror of continued proximity with strangers or neighbors. The reason why is that the small spaces are never contradicted. They are not haunted or challenged by wide-open space. Even the final sequence of the movie, which finds the hero, Tony Leung, contemplating life among some ancient ruins in a faraway rural area, does not denounce the small spaces of his Hong Kong world. Happy Together se passe en Argentine, au début le film devait s'appuyer sur le roman Buenos-Aires Affairs mais au fur et à mesure, Wong Kar-Wai s'en est éloigné : Ce fut difficile car on ne connaissait pas l'argentine, ça a évoluer .En fait ce film parle de Honk-Kong surtout. Au sujet de l'homosexualité des deux personnages principaux, Wong précise tout de suite sa vision des choses : Ce film n'est pas seulement sur deux hommes mais sur la relation humaine, la communication humaine et les moyens de la maintenir ; c'est deux hommes mais ça pourrait être n'importe quel autre couple.

Perhaps the most influential and internationally respected among them all, however, is Wong Kar-wai, one of the last film-auteurs in the tradition of French New Wave cinema and one of the last great mood creators in the world of film. Wong Kar-Wai has recently emerged from a three-year hiatus following the art house and Cannes-winning hit Happy Together to write, produce and direct In the Mood for Love ( Huayang Nianhua It is 1962 in Hong Kong. Maggie Cheung plays Su Lizhen, a secretary at a shipping firm, who first meets journalist Chow Mo-wan, played by Tony Leung, when they move into adjacent apartments in a claustrophobic building. Both are exiles from Shanghai, and the spouses of both are conspicuously absent. We soon learn that their respective spouses are having an affair, a discovery that leads Su and Chow to come together, but eventually also to separate. Wong has never placed a high priority on narrative in his films, though, and to focus obsessively on the plot is to completely miss the point of his stories. By cutting away the plot to its barest essentials, Wong is free to create a slow motion world where characters, setting, and atmosphere crystallize under his breathtaking directorial skill.

If so, it is ironical that Wong Kar-wai is blamed for being commercial, considering that a few years ago audience demanded their money back after watching Ashes of Time and it is not only until recently that the Hong Kong mainstream audience started appreciating him a little bit.
