Product Description

This, the first book-length study of Hong Kong cult director Wong Kar-wai, provides an overview of his career and in-depth analyses of his seven feature films to date. The study also takes an intriguing look at Wong's commercials for the likes of Motorola, BMW, and Lacoste and at his music video for DJ Shadow. Stephen Teo probes Wong's cinematic and literary influences--from Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock to Manuel Puig and Haruki Murakami--yet shows how Wong transcends them all. This comprehensive and thoroughly accessible study confirms Wong's position as the star of the Hong Kong-global nexus and as a postmodern exemplar of world cinema.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of the Global in The Local
Imprimis: this book covers Wong's work up until 2046 including his commercial shorts; however, Teo was not able to view Wong's "The Hand" in the Eros release - a very important film in Wong's oeuvre in my opinion.Of course My Blueberry Nights is also not included since it came after this book. The format is simple with an introductory chapter, one chapter per film and an ending chapter which covers his commercial shorts and concludes his thoughts about the summation of Wong Kar-wai's cinema.

This is a nice monograph on Wong's work.Where Stephen Teo (author of Hong Kong Cinema: The Extra Dimensions) is strongest and most sublime in this book is associating particular literary influences on Wong's oeuvre.Teo's sums this up in the conclusion of the book where he states: "...Wong paradoxically shows a love of literature that seems far greater than his love of cinema.Literature feeds Wong's faculty of image-making.He is inspired by writers such as Puig and Cortaza, Osamu Dazai and Liu Yichang to express non-linear, illogical narratives, using the word in this own distinctive manner to combine thought and image, and heighten our senses of perception."

Teo does a nice job in explaining some of the cinematic influences on Wong and other movie associations with Wong and his contemporaries. The pre and post handover anxiety and malaise theories and metaphors are covered nicely per film. But like all artists it is important to read a variety of sources on an auteur to understand more about him.I have read David Bordwell's Planet Hong Kong which has a chapter on "avant pop" cinema in HK which most of that chapter is about Wong and it also contains an essay dedicated to Chungking Express. However, there are several more books dedicated to Wong which I will delve into later such as Wong Kar-wai (Contemporary Film Directors) by Peter Brunette and books from The New Hong Kong Cinema Series that deal with specific films.

Where I do have some issues is the overuse of generic terms such as "post-modern" which completely loses context as the years pass.He also perpetuates the theory of Wong as a box-office disaster and suffering artist fighting his way against the HK production companies and disinterested masses with such statements as "...his films are box-office poison in Hong Kong...", "Hong Kong itself has proved resistant to his films, as judged on the whole by their consistently poor domestic box-office earnings", and "It represents Wong's faculty for survival even after the box-office fiasco of Days of Being Wild."This is just not true and I tend to agree with Tony Rayns who has stated on the Criterion commentary for Chungking Express that Wong is not a major flop, just only marginally successful in Hong Kong.If you look at the local box office for Wong's films you find most ranging from 7 to 9 HK million dollars (not counting the 11 HK million for As Tears Go By). While he hasn't had the success of a Wong Jing or Johnnie To's most successful films he also has not had the financial flops that To has had (PTU made about 3 HK million). In an interesting coincidence Stephen Teo would later pen Director in Action: Johnnie To and the Hong Kong Action Film which I feel is a must buy for fans of To.

However, there is so much information that is worth reading and returning to that I believe this as a must purchase for fans of Wong and/or scholars interested in his cinema.Teo sometimes overdoes Wong's position as underdog and he goes into fanboy territory with such statements as "...simply by committing himself in a way that his contemporaries cannot match." and has an annoying habit of using obscure comparisons that sometimes seem a bit forced and a bit Dennis Milleresque like "...kind that incorporates a Menippean discourse..." but his enthusiasm for the subject makes up for these faults.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still waiting for a good book on Wong
The problem for me with Teo's references to telos or Julia Kristeva, to follow-up on the comments of a previous reviewer, is that they seem symptomatic of the author's inability to truly get a handle on Wong's films. Teo applies ideas/theories to Wong's works like a graduate student dutifully displaying his wares. His work seems generally intelligent (as a student he'd get an A- for the assignment), but he provides very little insight into Wong's aesthetic. It came as little surprise, toward the end of the book, when the author admitted his indifference to In the Mood for Love. One thing is for sure: no one is going to write a good monograph on Wong Kar-Wai who thinks that In the Mood for Love is cold and uninvolving.

Product Description
Wong Kar-Wai, the brilliantly manic Chinese film director, is right above Quentin Tarantino on the theoretical film flow chart. With films such as As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, and Ashes of Time, Kar-Wai has been at the forefront of Hong Kong cinema. On the surface, Kar-Wai follows the rules, presenting the usual fare of car chases, explosions, and sex, but in reality his films are much deeper. His characters live and die on the fringe of acceptance and existence, in a nebulous gray area between good and almost evil. Wong-Kai has managed to invent an art that refuses the affluence of the West: by sticking his guns (and knives, fists and chains), this film director has created a bridge between Hong Kong and the rest of the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phtography, quality production, worth reading.
A great book. The photography is well selected. An insightful analysis. A little excessive in intelltualizing the ideas of Wong Kar-Wai's art.

I only wish it would emphasize more on how seductive and sensual his worksare, and how skillfully he uses the props and sounds(cigarettes , blood-redbedcover, the Falls, wallpapers etc.), the lighting (mastered byChristopher Doyle), colours (like stained glasses), and the make-up (thick, dark eye-brows rendering a Latin flavour) to exude nostalgia, time, sensuality, sorrow, and romanticism. It's very Hong-Kongish. Wong's art isall about feelings.

(P.S. Try to get Christopher Doyle's Photo Journal on Happy Together. Magnificient photography from the footages. Well writtenin both English and Chinese).

3-0 out of 5 stars Some nice photos and a lot of highbrow hot air.
As a big Wong Kar-Wai fan, I had to have the book. But most of the "critical analysis" goes way too far in trying to "understand" his films. He must get a great laugh when he reads about these author's claims of knowing the deeper meaning he was going for.Check out the pictures and forget about the articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent critical review of Wong Kar Wai's films.
Every fan of the Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wei should immediatly check out this book.It contains a critical review of all of his films to date, going into depth on the possible meanings and significant aspects of each film. As a graduate of a Film Production program, it can be a bit heady, but still very interesting. The best part is at the end when two interviews with the famed director are combined. It is a real treat to her Wong Kar Wei talk about his own work! The photography, mostly by Christopher Doyle, gives agreat glimpse into the world of Wong's films.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informational, and explains his works well.
This is the only book out on one of the most inspirational director around now. Wong Kar-wai inspired me to become a scriptwritter, and a film director. His films are so filled with real energy and feeling that he shows the asian mind on film better than anyone ever has. This book talks about his achievements, and also explains his films. From his first film, As Teas Go By, to his last film, Happy Together, the writters of this book explain the fundamentals of his writtings and goes further by explaining what every film tried to express. If there was ever an aspect in his movie that you never understood, then it is explained in this book. Although costly, the book is worth all the money because of the rich photographhic pictures included. This is a must have for all film enthusiastics, and any Wong Kar-wai fanatic like myself. ... Product Description
"Wong Kar-Wai" traces this immensely exciting director's perennial themes of time, love, and loss, and examines the political implications of his films, especially concerning the handover of former British colony Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China. This book is the first in any language to cover all of Wong's work, from his first film, "As Tears Go By", to his most recent, the still unreleased "2046". It also includes his best known, highly honoured films, "Chungking Express", "Happy Together", and above all, "In the Mood for Love".Most importantly, Peter Brunette describes the ways in which Wong's supremely visual films attempt to create a new form of cinema by relying on stunning, suggestive visual images and audio tracks to tell their story, rather than on traditional notions of character, dialogue, and plot. The question of Wong Kar-wai's use of genre film techniques in art films is also explored in depth. Peter Brunette is the Reynolds Professor of Film Studies at Wake Forest University. He has written books on Roberto Rossellini and Michelangelo Antonioni and is the co-author of "Screen/Play: Derrida and Film Theory". He is chief critic for indieWIRE.com and reviews regularly for the British trade journal, "Screen International".It is a volume in the "Contemporary Film Directors" series, edited by James Naremore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable look at an imaginative voice in cinema - that helps clarify the continuity and development within Wong Kar-Wai's work
Peter Brunette's brief guide to the work of Wong Kar-Wai is valuable especially for its insight into the continuity and development of Wong Kar-Wai's style and thematics. The book manages to balance careful analysis with scholarly engagement, and to make it personal without becoming precious.Occasionally his claims about style and substance in the work of Wong Kar Wai sound a bit obscure, and are hard to connect back to specifics in the films, but for the most part what Brunette does is trace a set of themes and stylistic elements through each one of the films - at least up through 2046 and the BMW ad that appeared around the same time, since this was written before the appearance of My Blueberry Nights, and while the collaboration with Stephen Soderbergh and Antonioni on Eros was still in development. He engages with other Wong Kar Wai criticism, but mostly in order to clarify and show what questions can be considered in relation to these films - for example, he examines claims that Wong Kar Wai's work is highly political and concerned mostly with issues such as the reunification of Hong Kong with mainland China, and he argues that while such interpretations are not without merit the thrust of the films is to connect such issues with the more dominant concerns in his work such as the impact of memory and the flow of time and the inevitability of loss. The book doesn't ever get bogged down in scholarship, and is an easy read for those familiar with Wong Kar-Wai's films. He helped me to see a number of things in the films that hadn't clicked for me before - especially that Wong Kar Wai is interested in the idea of personal identity as something constructed, an image.I like that Brunette both speaks broadly about Wong Kar Wai's films, and also that there is a section devoted to each film that helps tie the broader claims to specific reflections on the circumstances under which the film was made, the look and approach of each film, the highly important and unique use of music and sound in his works, and the storylines, replete with conflicts and struggles that recur throughout his work, but with important variations. Also valuable is his defense of the value of Wong Kar-Wai's work against charges that it is all style without substance - and at the same time his recognition that there are imperfections in the work, that there are missteps and mistakes, and that some of the criticisms raised against Wong Kar-Wai have merit and deserve consideration.Highly recommended for lovers of great cinema and especially for Wong Kar Wai fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative Study
Honestly written. Unpretentious yet intelligent. Brunette does not reach for dazzling overstatements, but instead keeps his claims conservative and convincing. Of particular interest is his discussion of Wong's recycling of and departure from genre conventions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinema Genius...
Wong Kar-wai is one of the most interesting and innovative directors since the French New Wave, and this collection of nearly all of his pre-"In The Mood For Love" films is well worth owning. These are all movies whose artistic and philosophic dimensions never seem to exhaust themselves...a rare thing in contemporary cinema...and a great reason to own this set...

Product Description
Wong Kar-wai's controversial film, Happy Together, was released in Hong Kong just before the handover of power in 1997.The film shows two Chinese gay men in Buenos Aires and reflects on Hong Kong's past and future by probing masculinity, aggression, identity, and homosexuality. It also gives a reading of Latin America, perhaps as an allegory of Hong Kong as another post-colonial society.

Examining one single, memorable, and beautiful film, but placing it in the context of other films by Wong Kar-wai and other Hong Kong directors, this book illustrates the depth, and well as the spectacle and action, that characterizes Hong Kong cinema.Tambling investigates the possibility of seeing Happy Together in terms of 'national allegory', as Frederic Jameson suggests Third World texts should be seen.Alternatively, he emphasizes the fragmentary nature of the film by discussing both its images and its narrative in the light of Borges and Manuel Puig.He also looks at the film's relation to the American road movie and to the history of the tango.he poses questions how emotions are presented in the film ( is this a 'nostalgia film'?); whether the masculinity in it should be seen negatively or as sins of a new hopefulness about Hong Kong's future: and whether the film indicates new ways of thinking about gender relationships and sexuality. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-read of Hong Kong Cinema
Finally, there is a book - not a chapter or paragraph - solely one of the Wong Kar Wai's movie. This time, HKU Press has done a fascinating job in publishing an in-depth study on Wong's Ashes of Time and Happy Together. Jeremy Tambling is an expert in gender studies. In the book, he analyzes the film by using theories of allgeory. Besides, he also reads the film in relation to homosexuality (as expected), Hong Kong's postcolonial situation, melancholy, the American road movie genre, the meaning and tradition of tango and he also suggests the impact of choosing Buenos Aires as the setting of the movie. Tambling has included interesting and impressive perspectives of reading a movie, which brought Wong Kar Wai a best director award in Berlin Film Festival.

You may not buy Tambling's arguments on reading the movie as you may say the author has over-interpreted it. However, what he has done in the book definitely enriches the genre of Hong Kong Cinema criticism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of wonderful insights on a fine HK movie
Wong Kar-wai's "Happy Together", which won some international films awards, is one of the best Hong Kong movies of recent years.

Jeremy Tambling here probes the film in depth an provides lots of interesting insights on the film, as well as the many possible interpretations of the plot as well as the relationship between the protagonists. In fact, Tambling goes deeper to explore the political and social undertones that the movie represents. It is therefore essential reader both for film buffs as well as those who're interested in social sciences. I enjoyed reading it very much!

4-0 out of 5 stars A detailed, original and impressive reading of Wong's movie.

Excerpt: 2046 is a 2004 Hong Kong film (filmed in Shanghai) written and directed by Wong Kar-wai. It is a loose sequel to the 1991 Hong Kong film Days of Being Wild and the 2000 Hong Kong film In the Mood for Love. It follows the aftermath of Chow Mo-wan's unconsummated affair with Su Li-Zhen in 1960s Hong Kong but also includes some science fiction elements. The film is the third chapter of a shared story that began with Days of Being Wild and continued with In the Mood for Love. There are four main story arcs to the film. Three are about the relations of Chow with women that he meets after losing Su Li-Zhen. The first concerns Chow and Wang Jing Wen, the second is about Chow and Bai Ling, and the third is about Chow and a different woman who is also named Su Li-Zhen. The fourth takes place in Chow's mysterious world of 2046 and concerns a Japanese passenger falling in love with an android. Typical of Wong Kar-wai films, the arcs are presented in pieces and in non-chronological order. Also typical of Wong Kar-wai films, many scenes in the film involve characters conversing back and forth in different languages (Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin). It is assumed that each character, while only speaking one primary language, is more-or-less fluent in the other languages. The approximate order of the arcs is listed below. 2047 Arc Part I This section is the only part narrated by Chow's fictional character and not Chow himself. Excerpt: John Woo Yu-Sen (born 1 May 1946) is a Chinese film director and producer from Hong Kong. Recognized for his stylized films of highly choreographed action sequences, Mexican standoffs, and use of slow-motion, Woo has directed several notable Hong Kong action films, among them, A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, and The Killer. His Hollywood films include Windtalkers, Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2. He also created the comic series Seven Brothers, published by Virgin Comics. Woo was described by Dave Kehr in The Observer in 2002 as "arguably the most influential director making movies today". Woo cites his three favorite films as David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia, Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Melville's Le Samouraï. Woo was born amidst the chaos of the Chinese Civil War in 1946. The Christian Woo family, faced with persecution during Mao Zedong's early anti-bourgeois-Nationalist purges after the communist takeover of China, fled to Hong Kong when he was five. His father was rendered unable to work by tuberculosis. Impoverished, the Woo family lived in the slums at Shek Kip Mei. Woo went to Concordia Lutheran School and received Christian education. His Christian background shows influences in his films. The family was rendered homeless by the big Shek Kip Mei fire of 1953. Charitable donations from disaster relief efforts enabled the family to relocate, however, violent crime had by then become commonplace in Hong...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15571 ... Read more
