After Charles Laughton chose her to play opposite him in Alfred Hitchcock 's JAMAICA INN (1939), he brought her to the United States where the young O'Hara made her American film debut as Esmarelda opposite Laughton 's Quasimodo in RKO 's lavish production of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939). Memorable Quotations: "Maybe I should be psychoanalyzed." as Lt. Mary Carter in TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI (1942). "I only know, if I never have another child, it will be a government project." as Elizabeth Cooper in FATHER WAS A FULLBACK (1949). The first of five films O'Hara made with director John Ford HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY , (one of my favorite movies) was the only Best Picture in which she starred. Also starring Walter Pidgeon Roddy McDowall Sara Allgood and Donald Crisp , this film beat CITIZEN KANE among others to win the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1941, and overall, it took five of the ten Oscars for which it was nominated.

Extractions: Maureen O'Hara Biography MAUREEN FITZSIMONS was born the second of six children to Charles and Marguerite FitzSimons on August 17, 1920 near Dublin, Ireland. Though tomboyish as a youngster, she eventually developed an interest in acting and as a teenager auditioned for the Abbey Theatre School. After Alfred Hitchcock gave her a role in JAMAICA INN (1939) with Charles Laughton , the English actor claimed to "discover" her. Laughton had gone to America in 1931 and signed a movie contract with RKO Pictures where he was about to star as Quasimodo in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939). He brought Maureen back to the states with him to play his Esmeralda in the film and changed her name to O'Hara. HUNCHBACK became her American film debut, RKO signed her, and she never looked back. After a few unremarkable films, in 1941 she was cast in John Ford 's film adaptation of the Richard Llewellyn novel HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY about a Welsh family in a 19th century mining town struggling to hold onto their way of life in the face of labor unrest and the Industrial Revolution. The picture, also starring Walter Pidgeon Donald Crisp Sara Allgood Roddy McDowall and Anna Lee , won the Oscar for Best Picture of the year, and anyone who had failed to notice her in HUNCHBACK could not have been so oblivious to her remarkable beauty and screen persona this time.

Extractions: By Linda Myers Maureen O'Hara, professor of finance at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, was named president of the American Finance Association this January. O'Hara, who is the Robert W. Purcell Professor of Management at the Johnson School, is the first woman to lead the AFA the premier academic organization on financial economics. O'Hara's area of specialty is the microstructure of financial markets. That research area looks at how the structure of securities markets affects the behavior of financial asset prices. O'Hara noted: "While markets such as stock exchanges or futures markets were largely unchanged for 100 or more years, that all changed with the advent of technology and the stock market crash of 1987. The issue has since become, not how markets are structured but, how they should be structured." Microstructure researchers analyze how the specific rules of exchange influence the prices that emerge, which leads to insights into the optimal way to design and regulate markets, said O'Hara. She explained: "An important issue is how does new information get incorporated into stock prices. Investors will lose to insiders if stock prices do not accurately reflect all available information, but how well and quickly the new information gets into prices depends, in part, on the rules of the trading system. Those rules also influence how much the gains from trade are split between the dealers, who buy and sell securities, and the investors. Moreover, investors watch and learn from market data, so market structure also influences what this data can convey."
