Product Description

"You are about to read the tale of the toughest Irish lass who ever took on Hollywood and became a major leading lady....In a career that has lasted more than sixty years, I have acted, punched, swashbuckled, and shot my way through an absurdly masculine profession....As a woman, I'm proud to say that I stood toe-to-toe with the best of them and made my mark on my own terms. I'm Maureen O'Hara and this is my life story."

-- From Chapter One of 'Tis Herself

In language that is blunt, straightforward, and totally lacking in artifice, Maureen O'Hara, one of the greatest and most enduring stars of Hollywood's "Golden Era," for the first time tells the story of how she succeeded in the world's most competitive business.

Known for her remarkable beauty and her fiery screen persona, Maureen O'Hara came to Hollywood when she was still a teenager, taken there by her mentor, the great actor Charles Laughton. Almost immediately she clashed with the men who ran the movie business -- the moguls who treated actors like chattel, the directors who viewed every actress as a potential bedmate.

Determined to hold her own and to remain true to herself, she fought for roles that she wanted and resisted the advances of some of Hollywood's most powerful and attractive men. It was in the great director John Ford that she first found someone willing to give her a chance to prove herself as an important actress. Beginning with the Academy Award-winning How Green Was My Valley, she went on to make five films with Ford and through him first met the great John Wayne, with whom she also made five films.

In O'Hara, Ford had found his ideal Irish heroine, a role that achieved its greatest realization in The Quiet Man. And in O'Hara, John Wayne found his ideal leading lady, for she was perhaps the only actress who could hold her own when on screen with "The Duke." Ford, however, was not without his quirks, and his relationship with his favorite actress became more and more complex and ultimately deeply troubled. The on-screen relationship between Wayne and O'Hara, on the other hand, was transformed into a close friendship built on mutual respect, creating a bond that endured until his death.

Writing with complete frankness, O'Hara talks for the first time about these remarkable men, about their great strengths and their very human failings. She writes as well about many of the other actors and actresses -- Lucille Ball, Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn, John Candy, Natalie Wood, to name a few -- with whom she worked, but ultimately it is about herself that she is most revealing. With great candor and a mixture of pride and regret, she reflects on just how this young girl from Ireland made it to America and onto movie screens all around the world. There were missteps, of course -- a troubled and deeply destructive marriage, a willingness to trust too readily in others -- but there were triumphs and great happiness as well, including her marriage to the aviation pioneer Brigadier General Charles F. Blair, who tragically died in a mysterious plane crash ten years after their marriage.

Throughout, 'Tis Herself is informed by the warmth and charm and intelligence that defined Maureen O'Hara's performances in some sixty films, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame to Miracle on 34th Street to The Parent Trap to McLintock! to Only the Lonely. 'Tis Herself is Maureen O'Hara's story as only she can tell it, the tale of an Irish lass who believed in herself with the strength and determination to make her own dreams come true. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maureen is Blankety-Blank Wonderful!
Other reviewers can tell you about this book and Miss O'Hara's life.I just want to say that I enjoyed her swearing.Like my Irish relatives and I, Miss O'Hara knows how to lay out a curse word in just the right place to make the thought she is expressing hilarious. For example, when telling a charming anecdote about how her husband Charlie and John Wayne got into some serious mischief and talked their way out of it by lying to officials, she writes, "So Charlie and Duke, those two bastards..."

In this world of F-ing this and F-ing that, I found her judicious swearing to be harmless and hilarious.

Maybe you have to be Irish to understand, but when a dignified, accomplished ladylike Irishwoman who knows all of the rules and abides by them - lets 'er rip - it's very effective and funny.

I enjoyed the book, and I think Miss O'Hara sometimes comes off as weak or passive only because she is choosing not to tell her full story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truely Wonderful!!
It was insightful , deep and wonderfully personal. She doesnt sugar coat anything and is wonderfully open about her life. I really loved this book and would recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Written in a strange style
Would have been easier to read if written by a real writer, the style was strange, that was the biggest drawback.I've read other books where it seems the author is directly talking to the reader, but this was just an odd style and sometimes hard to take, just didn't seem to "flow" like a well-written book does, language too "cutesy" at times.I did find many of the parts interesting, though, some good Hollywood gossip and she did seem honest in telling her story, however, some of it just seemed too far-fetched to be believable.Thought it was refreshing when she came right out and said she didn't like someone and why, without sugar-coating it.But several parts about John Ford and her last husband (and the conspiracy theory)just seemed at the very least, exaggerated. You are constantly asking yourself why she kept shooting herself in the foot and making the same mistakes over and over. When she was told NOT to reveal something, she did anyway and seemed to have lost some really good parts because of it and she marries 2 men who she didn't even like that much.Other than a few good parts, she seems to have spent most of her career in bad films.I did appreciate her honesty, when she often says she stupidly did things that she knew better than to do.And her honesty about her second awful husband and what she put up with.....but it makes you wonder, why?Why would someone with access to the best lawyers and the bread-winner put up with that? Why would you let the guy who stole your money when you were married manage it afterward? And you can understand putting up with abusive behavior to get a good part in a film (with John Ford directing) but why put up with that low-life husband of hers?Maybe she doesn't know either as she states many times in her book that she did stupid things.

3-0 out of 5 stars 'tis herself not quite what was expected
This book was in a little worse shape than I thought it might be.There was a hole in the cover and the pages aren't as tight as they should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tis Herself Autobi by Maureen O'Hara
John Wayne said she was just one of the boys, and was her best friend! This frank and often funny account of her eventful life is a read not to be missed, could not source in Australia, but as usual Amazon solved the problem ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books about high frequency trading
High frequency trading involves a deep understanding about the dynamics of the double auction book, how orders are being placed in the queue, the probability of being filled, etc. This book is indispensible and unique on this regard. No high frequency trader will survive these days' market microstructure unless she/he is familiar with the models and concepts discussed in this brilliant work.

A lifetime of brilliant research is condensed into this book. Those who dismiss it because it is theoretically sound and rigurous will be punished when that same theory they didn't care to understand plays with their portfolio.

I'm glad to say that this book saved my day on May 6th 2010, the same day when Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and many others lost hundreds of millions of dollars. Additional proof that this book is today more relevant than ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This year is the fifteenth anniversary of publication of the "Market Microstructure Theory." Since then, many books on the subject appeared, most prominently Hasbrouck's "Empirical Market Microstructure" (2007) for advanced readers and L. Harris' textbook for the first acquaintance with the subject(2002), but none, as yet, can substitute for readability and mathematical presentation of MMT.I had not obtain yet a copy of DeJong's book (2009), which seems interesting in its scope and composition. Even this author published in 2009 his error-ridden and overpriced (not my fault!) book--in which I attempted to organize material appearing since 1995 in a logical sequence--but failed. I give it four stars only because if I give five, where should we put La Divina Comedia and Anna Karenina? But the whole subject of microstructure is in dire need of work summarizing the latest achievements and outlining the failed promises. Nowhere it is as pertinent as in the field of high-frequency trading that did not exist when M. O'Hara wrote her classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book!
Perfect to review material from various papers, very good for initial introduction to the field, very nice for systematizing the material!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of current literature
This book is probably best for someone with some formal economics or mathematics training. Or at least a reader with a strong interest in this field. If you are interested in microstructure and want a good review of current models, this book is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, if you are prepared for it.
If you are serious about learning Market Microstructure this book is a great preview to reading the actual papers. It gives you enough intuition that you can approach classic papers by Stoll, Glosten and Milgrom, Easley and O'Hara, Kyle, etc.

Also, you do not need a serious knowledge of the subject matter to open this book (although it helps to have an undergraduate level investments class under your belt). However, finance prerequisites aside, you should be prepared with a fairly thorough knowledge of microeconomics and statistics.A semester or two at a good graduate economics program should do the trick.Otherwise, this can be a tough read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IA Chronicle: Up to date and rife with authoritative biographies
Irish American Chronicle isn't a publication readers can categorize as merely a lengthy coffee table exercise to unravel the Irish American experience in chronological sequence. An incredible amount of hard work obviously went into the production of IAC, and frankly, it's both newer and therefore more up-to-date than Long Journey Home, which was the herculean effort from the 1990s that wound up serialized by the Public BroadcastingSystem in hard copy, on DVD and VHS.

Commencing with a quaintly disarming foreword by Maureen O'Hara--an Irish American lass who symbolizes having one foot in the old country and one foot in the new--obligatory background material sets the stage for the rest of the book.Back to 8000 BC readers time-travel to meet up with Ireland's first inhabitants, an unruly mob that traversed a land-bridge from Scotland to Ireland. Skipping forth a scant 6000 years, readers find the Beaker people arriving in Ireland around 2000 BC. Hailing from Western Europe and crafting bell-shaped drinking vessels, they evidently envisioned the coming of the Guinness family a couple thousand years later.

The tall, blond and nasty Celts began arriving from the Balkan steppes in around 900 BC, with mass migration of their ilk continuing for hundreds of years, until around 150 BC, when the Gaels arrive from Spain to evade the westward expansion of the Roman Empire.

Ultimately Roman Emperor Claudius invades England in 43 AD, but fails to completely subjugate the British Isles contingent, and abandons plans to attack Ireland--a decision having a decided long-term effect on the evolving ethnic composition of the Emerald Isle.

Around 432 AD Saint Patrick arrives in Ireland from Britain to establish his mission and instruct locals in monotheistic Christianity. Saint Patrick dies in 461 AD and is buried under or near today's Down Cathedral, in Northern Ireland's County Down.Surrounded by haunting grounds enveloped in lush, verdant foliage, the cathedral is a must-see for anyone who travels to the North from Dublin and wishes to place themselves on some terrain walked by Saint Patrick himself.

Not surprisingly, the English and their heavy-fisted impetus in fomenting both the mass Ireland-to-America emigration and attempts to squash both Ireland and America's rallying cries for independence from the Crown, is allowed ample ink in Irish American Chronicle. It never hurts to read about it all again, just to be reminded of whence and why Irish Americans came to the shores.

The level that Irish American Chronicle best succeeds on is compiling a concise and understandable history of the Emerald Isle, astride a highly complete and detailed biography of the significant Irish who abandoned Ireland to help build a new life for themselves and their loved ones in a new country--to say nothing of their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who carry forth the generational torch in America today.

You'll even find President Barack O'bama inside IAC. `Tis true. The president is part-Irish on his mother's side, with family roots in County Offaly. (Chicago Alderman Ed Burke recently learned that O'bama is part Irish, offering that, "I was not surprised to learn that O'bama is of Irish heritage. He's got such a way with words.")

We'd be remiss if we didn't add that Arizona's venerable U.S. Senator John McCain occupies the same IAC page as President Obama. Two of John McCain's great-great grandparents, John and Mary Young, hailed from County Antrim. Senator McCain, the 2008 Republican nominee for American president, remains a strong advocate of immigrant's rights.

IAC's pages are rife with Irish American politician's biographies. Wisconsin's Senator Joe McCarthy is awarded almost an entire chapter on his own, having led the insane witch hunt to expose Communists in all levels of American society during the 1950s.

Recent American presidents like JFK, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and the aforementioned Barack Hussein O'bama all boast Irish lineage. Of course, a few of our Irish American politicians were `unjustly' accused of unseemly activities during their political reigns. "Gentleman" Jimmy Walker, New York City's mayor from the 1920s was supposedly on the take. Tsk, tsk.Who can forget shady Governor Huey Long of Louisiana, felled by an assassin's bullet in 1935?

From America's beginning to today, from priest to nun to banker to cop to politician to actor to writer, noted Irish Americans of both sexes find their way to the pages of Irish American Chronicles.

Could "Bugs" Moran and Dion O'Bannon possibly have been the Chicago American gangsters they were accused of being? You'll find the answers contained among the 420 pages of Irish American Chronicles. This must-read chronicle was assembled by a host of collaborators, among them: Peter Quinn, Thomas Fleming, Terry Golway, Tom Deignan and Vincent Feeney, Ph.D.

Excerpt: Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 25 October 1957) was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Dunsany lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, worked with W.B. From the author: Children in foster care have a high prevalence of developmental delay. A program for developmental screening was designed to address the increased risk of developmental delay among children in foster care. Fifty-two children birth to 18 months were evaluated using the Denver Developmental Screening Test-II (DDST-II), Early Language Milestone Scale-2 (ELM-2), and the HOME Scale. Forty-nine children were screened with the Infant Neurological International Battery. Thirty five percent of the children failed DDST-II screening. Language assessment with the ELM-2 resulted in a mean global ELM-2 standard score of 89. Sixty-one percent of children had abnormal neurologic INFANIB screening exams. HOME scores reflected foster care environments that provided adequate developmental and emotional stimulation for the children. Implications for future interventions should move from developmental screening to comprehensive developmental testing and expansion of foster parent education regarding the growth and development of the foster children in their care.
