Moynihan (1928-1996) was a world authority on animal behavior, with major contributions to the study of communication in birds, primates and cephalopods. In 1957 he became the Resident Naturalist and Director of what was then a small field station on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, later named the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). He transformed the station into a major research institution in tropical biology. After retirement in 1973, he served as Senior Scientist at STRI, and continued writing and researching the behavior of various species of wild and imported pheasants at his farmhouse in France. DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY These papers consist primarily of field notes, and include correspondence, photographs, sonograms and spectograms, and a small number of audio tapes. Extractions: There exists a great controversy as to whether tree-shrews (family Tupaiidae) should be placed in an order with primates or whether they are insectivores. These creatures are mammals mostly found in south-east Asia. The table 1 shows the extant tree-shrews. There are two subfamilies, Ptilocercinae and Tupaiinae, with the subfamily Ptilocercinae as being primitive because of being nocturnal (Gould, 1978; cited in Martin, 1990). All tree-shrews share some common characteristics: relatively small body mass, generally omnivorous (eating arthropods and fruit), the skeleton has an unspecialized placental mammalian pattern, all digits have claws, and the hands and feet are not prehensile (Martin, 1990). Not all of the genera of tree-shrews are arboreal , the genera Lyonogale and Urogale are mostly terrestrial, and the rest of the genera are probably best described as being semi-arboreal (Martin, 1990). Most tree-shrews share many morphological and behavioral characteristics with squirrels, so much so that the Malay word tupai is used for both tree-shrews and squirrels (Martin, 1990). One view is to place the tree-shrews in the order Insectivora. The order Insectivora is made up of elephant-shrews, shrews, hedgehogs, tenrecs, moles, and possibly tree-shrews. Now it was suggested that the order Insectivora be divided into the suborders Menotyphla (elephant-shrews and tree-shrews) and Lipotyphla (shrews, hedgehogs, tenrecs, and moles) (Haeckel, 1866; Weber, 1928; cited in Martin, 1990). Tree-shrews have been thought of both being primitive and advanced as compared to other insectivores (Martin, 1990). It has been noted that tree-shrews have very primitive placental mammalian characteristics as compared to other members of the order Insectivora (Carlsson, 1922; cited in Martin 1990). Given the differences or rather the primitiveness of the tree-shrews it has also been proposed to place the tree-shrews in the separate order Scandentia (Butler, 1972; cited in Martin, 1990).

Farm Sanctuary owns a 175-acre farm in Orange, New York, where rescued animals and their caretakers live. The Township Board of Assessment refused to grant Farm Sanctuary a charitable exemption from the payment of real estate taxes on the farm. The Township determined that the benevolent care of farm animals was not a charitable purpose, and noted that a large percentage of Farm Sanctuary's funds "appeared to be used for fund raising purposes or other non-care activities." The New York Supreme Court dismissed Farm Sanctuary's petition alleging that it was entitled to the tax exemption. The Appellate Division reversed, holding that the Supreme Court erred in summarily determining that Farm Sanctuary did not qualify for the tax exemption. The case was remitted for determination whether Farm Sanctuary was principally or primarily caring for farm animals, and doing so for the benefit of the public at the New York property.

If confirmed, the new population will raise the estimated numbers of orangutans by about 10%, and would constitute one of the largest populations of orangutans, along with the population of Sumatran orangutans in the Leuser ecosystem. Orangutan numbers are estimated by counting their night nests and making calculations which take into account the quantity and age of the nests. Sumatran Orangutans amongst the Top 25 most endangered primates A report issued by Conservation International (CI) and the Primate Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) states that one in three of the planet's apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primate species is now threatened with imminent extinction - a very alarming statistic. The report noted that primate species and sub-species listed as "endangered" and "critically endangered" by the IUCN rose from 120 listed species in 2000 to 195 in 2002 - a rise of almost 63% over two years! Twenty-three of the primates identified as the most endangered are found in the world's most bio-diverse areas. These are the regions identified by Conservation International which, despite only accounting for a small percentage of the Earth's surface, contain over 60% of all the earth's flora and fauna. These regions include Indo-Burma, Madagascar, the Guinean Forests of West Africa and Brazil's Atlantic Forests.
