Product Description
This book examines the political behavior of primates in the context of a comparison of human and nonhuman social life. Essays by leading scholars from primatology and the social sciences explore the extent to which it is justifiable to speak of politics as a phenomenon among primates and show how human politics can be more deeply understood in the light of hominid evolution and primate behavior. The new paperback edition includes a new preface which reviews developments in the field since the original publication by Southern Illinois University Press in 1991. Contents: Foreword by Albert Somit; Preface to the Paperback Edition, Glendon Shubert and Roger D. Masters; Editors' Preface; PART I: PRIMATOLOGY AND POLITICS; Introduction: Primatological Theory, Glendon Schubert; Primate Politics, Glendon Schubert; On the Significance of the Concept of the Harem When Applied to Animals, Thelma E. Rowell; Redefining the Social Link: From Baboons to Humans, Shirley S. Strum and Bruno Latour; PART II: CHIMPANZEES; Introduction: The Missing Political Link, Glendon Schubert; Gombe Chimpanzee Politics, Jane Goodall; Sex Differences in the Formation of Coalitions among Chimpanzees, Frans B.M. de Waal; PART III: HUMAN; Introduction: Human Politics, Roger D. 4-0 out of 5 stars An effort to link primate behavior with human politics
In its time, this was a pioneering work. It brought together a team of primatologists and political scientists, to discuss primate politics generally and the extent to which this might enhance understanding of human politics, more specifically. The editors, Glendon Schubert and Roger Masters, represent two of the leaders in the movement termed "biopolitics" (the use of biology to understand human politics, in its many manifestations). As with many edited volumes, this is not as cohesive as one might like. Nonetheless, a provocative volume that provokes reflection. . . .

As the editors say on Page xli: "In our experience, the topic of primate politics is of interest to social scientists as well as biologists, to students as well as professors, and to the general public as well as to academic professionals. It is timely to expand the circle of those who understand human life from an evolutionary perspective."

The first part is titled "Primatology and Politics." Glendon Schubert's introduction sets the table for a series of essays. Schubert composed a chapter on "Primate Politics." Some well respected students of primate behavior, Thelma Rowell, Shirley Strum, and Bruno Latour, add a couple chapters focusing on harems among primates and social behavior from baboons to humans.

Part II is labeled "Chimpanzees."Glen Schubert begins with an essay on "The Missing Political Link," suggesting the relevance of chimpanzees for understanding human behavior. There follow essays by Jane Goodall and Frans de Waal.

Finally, Part III-"Humans." Masters begins with an introductory essay on the relevance for primate biology to human politics. Primatologist Nicholas Blurton-Jones authors an essay on sharing scrounging, and hoarding. Masters (and a team working with him) contributes a chapter on human leaders' facial displays. James Schubert reports on his research regarding human vocalization. Finally, Masters provides a final piece on "Primate Politics and Political Theory."

Of course, not everyone will be enamored of this work. Those who believe that primates have no relevance for humans will not be appreciative of this work. But for those who are intrigued by the possible implications of the behavior of our primate relatives for Homo sapiens, this is an intriguing and thought provoking volume.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stories
Some really good stories and some rather confusing stories. If you're a James Tiptree, Jr. fan, of course, you must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid collection -- with 1 all-time CLASSIC!
This is as solid as NE Tiptree collection, but worth it all 4 "A Momentary Taste of Being," 1 of THE most devastating SF stories U'll ever read. Impossible 2 Dscribe, it takes 70 pages, but U'll B knocked out. Should've won an award, Cms 2 B completely overlooked, even by Tiptree's fans -- would make a great movie: the enormity & the Dspair, as U discover what Man's Ultimate Goal really is. Vivid, riveting, totally involving. A tough read, but what an impact! "Her Smoke Rose Up Forever" is pretty powerful, 2. Tiptree's suicide was a big loss 2 the SF field. I also recommend her novel BRIGHTNESS FALLS FROM THE AIR, & many of the stories in her earlier collection, WARM WORLDS AND OTHERWISE. ... Read more

This abundantly illustrated look at orangutan life tells the story of one of the most fascinating members of the great ape family. In Orangutans, conservation biologist Junaidi Payne presents an informative and compelling description of the lives of orangutans, from their habitat and behavior to the complex intricacies of orangutan society, with discussions of such topics as the differences between wild and captive creatures and characteristics of age and sex. He provides information on orangutan conservation and rehabilitation as well, discussing threats to orangutan welfare and strategies for safeguarding orangutans in the future. Extraordinary color photographs by award-winning photographer Cede Prudente reveal little-seen aspects of orangutan life in the rainforest and showcase the breathtaking landscapes of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutans also includes a map of orangutan distribution and information on where to see orangutans in the wild.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and great buy!
I bought this book for my grad. student daughter who spent 9 months in Indonesia studying orangutans. It's a great book and a great bargain. Many of the book's wonderful photographs are similar to photos she emailed home. This book helped us "experience" her great adventure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wimps out where it counts the most
This book has gorgeous photos that will make you fall in love with orangutans - the people of the forest. It also has very good explanations about the animal and forest characteristics. HOWEVER, the authors have missed a huge opportunity to move people to protect this endangered great ape. The book's conclusion is very disappointing, in that it pretty much lets the oil palm companies off the hook for their wanton destruction of the orangutan's rainforest. (Since this book promotes the WWF perspective, one has to wonder if some corporate "partnership" is involved here.)

If someone wants an accurate portrayal of this spectacular animal -- and the spectacular annihilation of its habitat -- I strongly recommend "Thinkers of the Jungle: The Orangutan Report" by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits, and Jay Ullal. Be warned: "Thinkers" has some disturbing pictures of the cruelty being inflicted, to this day, on our close relatives. There is no corporate greenwash in this book.Thinkers of the Jungle ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money - don't buy this book
If you like photos, you will be disappointed with the fuzzy, poor quality black and whites at the end of the book. The author's degree is in criminal justice, and perhaps she should remain in that field. This book has short, choppy paragraphs and a "messy" chronology, going backward and forward through time in a confusing manner. The book lacks "tone" as if the author cannot decide whether she wants to be scientific or humorous. Worse, the science is not objective and the humor is not funny. The author describes what is going on in Ziggy's head as if it's factual(for instance, if the monkey hates or harbors resentment). Save your money. This is not a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Ziggy
Andrea Campbell's book, Bringing Up Ziggy, portrays a realistic and honest picture of life with a monkey, and the commitment needed to foster a primate for the Helping Hands program.

Can you imagine living 30 years ina wheelchair unable to move your arms or legs? Quadriplegics can live anaverage lifespan of 60 to 65 years. Simple tasks such as getting a drink,or turning the pages of a book eludes them. Inspired by the Helping Handsprogram that breeds and trains capuchin monkeys to assist quadriplegics, and seeing first-hand the quality-of-life that a capuchin-assistant adds toa quadriplegic's life, Andrea Campbell became a foster-parent in1989.

The book supplies information on raising an infant capuchin, offersemotional details of dealing with the hierarchy of troop mentality within afamily unit, and in general, is a study in animal behavior.

Campbell'sstory is one of inspiration, love, and dedication. An entertaining, trueadventure, "Bringing Up Ziggy," is sure to tug on the heartstrings of allwho read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Primate Portrait of the non-human kind.
This book presents refreshing insight into the dedication and commitment necessary to raise a non-human primate (a capuchin monkey) for the Helping Hands Program (a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the qualityof life for quadriplegic individuals by training capuchin monkeys to assistthem with daily activities) located in Boston, MA. Ms Campbell relates herjourney with Ziggy, a female capuchin monkey, from infancy adoption toadulthood. The delights of raising a baby, the trials of adolescence andthe compassion needed to understand the intricacy of maturity are alldescribed with comprehensive detail.

The tantalizing prospectof living with one of our closet relatives is quickly dispelled as infantantics turn into potential difficulties. Each member of this family mustlearn their place in Ziggy's world. And, indeed, each member is quicklyplaced in a particular category, according to Ziggy's personal hierarchy.Ms Campbell weighs the pros and cons of having accepted the responsibilityof foster caring this incredible creature. She holds back nothing indescribing what it is like to share her home with a monkey. Controversyabounds in regards to some of the necessary procedures and Ms. Campbellpresents them astutely. She interjects facts about these incrediblecreatures among the personal account of her life with Ziggy.

Theaccomplishments of Ms. Campbell and her human family, in learning tounderstand who Ziggy is, along with Ziggy's own accomplishments, makes foran engaging narrative. Several black & white photos enhance thisaccount of one woman's devotion to her diminutive charge and her beliefs inthe benefits proposed by the Helping Hands Program. It is a must read foranyone who has contemplated life with a non-human primate. Having raised acapuchin monkey from infancy to adulthood myself, I can speak fromexperience and highly recommend this book. ... Read more
