Continental Siege Aircraft, By Greg Costikyan Continental Siege Aircraft. by greg costikyan. 10.0 Introduction. ContinentalSiege Aircraft is a variant of Ogre adding bombers, fighters http://www.sjgames.com/ogre/articles/csa.html
Extractions: by Greg Costikyan "Continental Siege Aircraft" is a variant of Ogre adding bombers, fighters, anti-aircraft units, and the airborne equivalent of Ogres to the game. This rules section deals with the rules common to all aircraft. The following three sections deal with the individual aircraft types, and the last deals with anti-aircraft units. When the players choose to play one of the standard scenarios using air rules, bombers, fighters, and AA units are all considered to be armor for point purposes. The strengths of bombers and fighters are given below. Bomber Fighter D3, M5 D4, M6 6/0 4/3 At the beginning of a game, all aircraft enter from an edge of the map. Which map edge an aircraft enters on is determined by the initial positions of the owning player's units. Thus, in a straightforward, defense vs. Ogre scenario, any aircraft would enter on the defender's map edge, and so on. Aircraft move in a manner different from normal units. Firstly, aircraft are considered to face towards a single hex juncture (see illustration, below). [I have to scan this in. Basically, they face towards a hex's corner rather than edge.] A hex juncture is defined as the point at which two sides of a hex intersect. The "nose" of an aircraft counter must always be set pointing towards a single hex juncture.

Extractions: Tor, 287 pages Order this book "Ah, life is sweet." That's the mantra of Johnson Mukerjii, CEO of Mukerjii Display Systems, a high-tech company about to unveil a revolutionary new holographic display device. Indeed, life has been good to Mukerjii, whose business success has allowed him to acquire the very best in palatial mansions and trophy wives, and to indulge his taste for fine wine, gourmet food, Saville Row suits, and Jaguars. He fully expects the holographic display device, the MDS-316, to make him even richer. Then the aliens arrive. Not with lasers and plans of Earth domination; these aliens are capitalists, and want to trade. On offer: a complete library of alien scientific and technological knowledge. The price: only the planet Jupiter. "Jupiter? What's it good for?" the Earth negotiators shrug, and hand it over. The trouble is, the alien tech is useless because it's so far in advance of ours. Earth has just sold a precious resource for peanuts, as the Indians did with Manhattan Island centuries ago. And the first group of aliens is only the beginning. Suddenly, Earth is a tourist world, a quaint backwater destination for rich interstellar vacationers. Earth markets are flooded with alien products; the result is global economic collapse. After all, who wants a Jaguar when they can have an antigrav vehicle that will travel at Mach 6? Who wants the MDS-316 when they can have complete holographic sensory immersion?

Greg Costikyan First Contract. by greg costikyan. First published 2000. What's upwith that? Earth is contacted by vastly superior aliens, who by http://www.flyingturkeys.com/gsg/gsgcostikyan.html
Extractions: Earth is contacted by vastly superior aliens, who by dint of better technology render almost all human business enterprise obsolete. This book follows the story of Johnson Mukerjii, a bright but ethically challenged high-tech tycoon who decides, in his own way, to start over: by catering to the intergalactic need for nice trinkets to buy in airports. He's written a couple of fantasy novels, but is probably better known as a game designer; he has also published many articles about the game industry. His home page is here (This link will open a new browser window.) There aren't a lot of science fiction books that have capitalism as a theme. Certainly plenty of SF has incredibly wealthy, usually sinister, multinationals or multiplanetaries (e. g., Joshua Mertz ), but how many of them have an IPO as an essential plot device? The acknowledged classic of business-SF is Pohl and Kornbluth's The Space Merchants , which this book in no way resembles.
Greg Costikyan First Contract Reviewed By Rick Kleffel greg costikyan. Tor / Tom Doherty Associates. But the alien scenario is playedout to nearperfection in greg costikyan's pre-crash novel 'First Contract'. http://trashotron.com/agony/reviews/costikyan-first_contract.htm
Extractions: Agony Column Home Agony Column Review Archive REFERENCES COLUMNS Science Fiction Summer 2000. The girls were good looking and the stock market was high. High tech was still high profit. We were all going to retire early, live the good life. And then the aliens came, and ruined it all. As 'First Contract' begins, life is sweet for Johnson Mukerjii. He's a go-getter jet setter of the Internet startup generation, and he just about has a hot piece of technology that could make him a bundle. He has all the good things that go with the job a wonderful house, a hot wife and a couple of fast cars. But when those pesky aliens arrive, they bring more than gifts and greetings. They bring ultra-cheap technology. Suddenly, we're the Aztecs and the aliens are the Spaniards. We don't have a hope of competing with them. Mukerjii finds his life going down the toilet at an alarming rate. Costikyan's scenario isn't all doom and gloom, however. Capitalism is a two-edged sword that can be turned against the aliens just as well as it can be used by them. Mukerjii hasn't forgotten how to cut fiscal throats even though he himself has been under the knife. There's more than a bit of a Douglas Adams vibe at work in this novel, and the satire is relieved by some sunnier thoughts. My only regret is that the novel, even in the title, suggests that there would be a follow up. It hasn't come out as yet, which probably means that Costikyan is doing fine in the game business. But if he ever needs a fallback plan, that novelist gig worked out well in 'First Contract'.

Extractions: Dollar Diplomacy II (vg01) by Greg Costikyan In the ruthless days of the New York Conspiracy (1968-75) that struck deep into hearts and laugh lines of the postal hobby, the delusions of grandeur and glory were no less strong than the current hobby's concern with its own ego. It came to pass that during one session a group of conspiracy members had a typical financial cash flow crisis not uncommon to the fiscal irresponsibilities of the era. In a brainstorm the idea of a version of Diplomacy to make money was born. The idea is that each player puts up $5, creating a total pot of $35. (A Kingly sum in 1968). One dollar was donated to the house hosting the affair, leaving a grand total of $34 to be divided up as follows: Winner: Gets all $34. If no winner then the survivors get $.50 per supply center and $17 is divided equally amongst the survivors. It should be noted that there could be no voted conclusion to a game that was not unanimous and no draws that did not include all survivors. The game could end at a time or a year to make things clean and deadly.
Dudness By Scott Rosenberg And Greg Costikyan Dudness (rr11). Designed by Scott Rosenberg and greg costikyan. Afterthe Spring 1901 move, one province is randomly chosen to be http://www.variantbank.com/rules/d/dudness.htm
Extractions: Dudness (rr11) Designed by Scott Rosenberg and Greg Costikyan After the Spring 1901 move, one province is randomly chosen to be "dudded"; thereafter, one of the provinces adjacent to the dudded province(s) will be dudded (which adjacent province is determined randomly) at the end of each Spring or Fall move. In other words, the Dudness spreads from an initial single province. Any unit in a province when it is dudded, or that moves into a dudded province, is randomly transported to a vacant province somewhere on the game-map. (Hmm, that's an SPI-ism I mean board, of course.) Note that units are eligible to be transported only to vacant provinces. Transportation, like dudness-spreading, occurs after the moves are adjudicated: thus, a unit ordered to move into a dudded province in a Spring move would be considered transported after the Spring adjudications but before the Fall moves. Dudded supply center provinces remain supply center provinces, and the player who owned the supply center when the province was dudded retails ownership of the province. If a unit moves into a dudded province in a Fall move, it is considered to capture any supply center in that province before it is transported. Units may stand each other out of dudded provinces.

A line of holes stitched the left wing, and an engine began to sputter. Were going down, Cap'n! A holographic explosion filled the viewspace, to be replaced by the Crawford Entertainment logo. "Where'd you get the game, boy?" Pa demanded from the doorway. "Huh? Jimmy copied it for me." "Copied, eh? You didn't pay for it, then." I blinked. "Well, no, Pa. He just copied it. Took maybe fifteen seconds." Pa grunted. "Yep, easy as pie. Comes natural, does piracy." Oh, crap. Janie's head peered round the door, smirking; she could always tell when I was gonna get it. But Pa just pulled over a chair and sat down. "Now, see here, son," he said. "When you buy a game, you ain't paying for the memory bubble and the box. You're payin' for maybe a coupla man-years of work. The cost of the product is labor and imagination, not materials. A man's got a right to the fruits of his own intellectual endeavor. When you copy a game, you're stealin' same's when you sneak out the door to the gun store with a box of shells in your pocket." I winced; that was last year's transgression.

Extractions: (Tor, July 2000, US$24, 287 pages, ISBN: 0312873964.) Rating: "A/A-" First Contract is a very entertaining update of a classic SF question: what happens if the aliens arrive, and WE become the Aztecs or Incas or South Sea islanders? Costikyan's answer: a business collapse that makes the Great Depression look like a 'rolling readustment', bringing 50% unemployment, shantytowns and soup lines to Silicon Valley and to every industrial country. After all, who's going to buy a Lexus, when you can buy an alien aircar that goes from zero to Mach 1 in 60 seconds for $30,000? Johnson Mukerjii, the fabulously wealthy founder of Mukerjii Data Systems, quickly becomes a statistic as he loses his company, his mansion, his Jag and his trophy wife, the treacherous but practical Maureen, who, noting it was "sweet, but possibly unwise" of him to have given her power of attorney, cleans him out of everything but his underwear and pocket change: $17.41. Mukerjii finds a certain satisfaction in cooking 'thon pour chat, avec une sauce tomate' for his fellow down-and-outers in Sludgetown. But you can't keep a good entrepeneur down, and with an unwitting grubstake from a wealthy, right-wing SF author the galactics find his human-supremacist novels a hoot he introduces the Mukerjii Drink Valet: an improved drink-bulb for zero-gee travel. It's a hit with the alien tourists, but there are

Extractions: Buy it A novel of alien invasion and big business First Contract isn't your usual first contact novel. The aliens don't want to invade us or enslave us. They'll trade with us and send us their tourists, but only because hey, they're already here, so might as well. Mainly, they want tometaphoricallybuy Manhattan for $24. Johnson Mukerjii isn't your usual SF hero. Rather than the typical all-American, laser-wielding athlete, he's a portly businessman in his forties. Sure, he's a bastard sometimes, but a likable one. The aliens arrive one day, give a good sales schpiel, and promptly buy Jupiter. In return, Earth receives the accumulated knowledge and technology of hundreds or thousands of alien cultures. Pretty sweet deal, huh? But it quickly becomes apparent that Earth got screwed: on one hand, Jupiter represents 70% of all of the mass of the solar system. That is, if we ever had any hopes of getting out into the universe with our own local resources, we now have 70% less to do it with. A more immediate problem is that Earth is quickly inundated with alien technology: who needs a $10,000 holographic computer display when you can have full-sensory VR for $1,000? Earth quickly suffers the worst depression since the fall of the Roman empire.
