Extractions: The anti-hero as Ms Boyett-Compo refers to him is Captain Kamerone Cree, the Prime Reaper, and one of the most feared beings in this futuristic world. Bridget Dunne is a worker in the Behavioural Modification unit and part of a resistance movement against the Rysalian Empire and she knows that her role in the resistance is to bring Cree over to their side. When Cree is betrayed by an unknown person and sent without a trial to Be-Mod 9 the resistance use this time to bring him over to their side. While undergoing the treatment Cree is forced to suffer his own death in numerous ways and numerous times. A part human and part animal the shapeshifter finds that it is the human part of his being that the Be-Mod unit prey on as they proceed to torture him day after day. The only light in this world of bleak torture is the caring Bridget who he is drawn to even as she helps to torture him. Slowly their work pays off and Cree finds himself becoming attached to Bridget and depends on her more and more to ease the suffering he goes through. Little does he know that it is the subliminal messages being fed to him during the torture that are causing him to think in this way. Nor does Bridget realise that she too is being manipulated so that she can overcome her fear and revulsion for the Reaper, a fear that is instilled in the kidnapped women of Earth.

Warning: If you have never told a fib; fudged on your taxes; told a little white lie to get out of trouble; lied about your age; colored your hair; or forged your significant other's signature to a piece of paper (read check), go no further. You are perfect and have no business consorting with the rest of us mortals. As a child, I sat at the knee of my Cherokee-Irish grandfather and listened with wide-eyed wonder to the glorious stories he could spin. Some made me laugh, but most made me shiver all the way to my curled-up toes and that, after all, had been his intent. He whispered engrossing tales of dark, eerie graveyards and ghostly forms floating above the moss-draped granite tombs; of talking cats who issued dire warnings to human as they carried old Negro women to their rest at the local haunted church; of dead men sitting bolt upright on their cooling boards during the wake. (I shudder even now thinking of that last image because he swore he actually saw that happen! But then again, he said he saw a twenty foot tall goat eating scuppernog in the cemetery late one evening.) Now, there are those with logical minds who could explain away every tale my PaPa ever told me:

The first book in a trilogy that acts as a prequel to the nine-volume WindLegend Saga, WindFall gives new meaning to sword and sorcery fantasy so much so that waiting for the next offering creates a growing hunger for more of this author's work. Boyett-Compo grabs the unwary reader by the imagination and pulls him or her deeper and deeper into a world of magic, love and treachery that never ceases to amaze, entertain and bemuse. Prince Kaelan of the Hesar Clan loves Gillian Cree (the very young daughter of an ambassador to his father's court). Gillian loves him in return, and even though she lacks the years to make a mature decision, they vow to wed when appropriate. The powers-that-be decree a different and far more painful future for them, using deceit and misdirection in order to bring that future into being. Kaelen weds as ordered. But when Gillian reaches a marriageable age, she flees rather than marry the man chosen for her. Gillian's brother Nickolas helps her escape but manages to get them lost in a raging blizzard. Nearly frozen, they stumble onto shelter in the form of an isolated castle that houses an outcast and accused wife-killer. Most of the faults I found with this book could be my own, because I read other books in the saga prior to this one and out of sequence. However, Boyett-Compo fails to provide sufficient explanations of some institutions and conventions of the world of

Extractions: Action-packed, with a carefully woven, intricate plot and a love story of sorts, Charlotte Boyett-Compo's dark and dangerous book balances good and evil, life and death and hate. But it lets the reader judge the validity of all these concepts. In the Teeth of the Wind is not the book for those seeking a sweet romance and happy-ever-after ending. This book plumbs the depths of human depravity and follows the dark paths of revenge and power, drugs and sex. Not a pleasant book, it doesn't prettify the world. Nevertheless, I couldn't stop reading it until I reached the end. Conor Nolan and Rhianna Marek are cops. A womanizer with a past, close to being an alcoholic, Conor sleeps around, lusts after women and finally falls prey to his lusts. But he loves Rhianna, seeing her as the one woman who justifies his faith in goodness and truth. Rhianna returns his love but she refuses to be just another conquest in his stud book. When Conor disappears after being seduced and drugged by a mystery woman, Rhianna receives a letter, written prior to his disappearance, in which he declares his love for her. Rhianna knows she must find him, but she doesn't know that she will endanger her life and the lives of others in the hunt or that the final outcome will prove more horrible than she can imagine.
