Al Bello/Allsport FILDERSTADT, Germany (Ticker) Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic saw her 12-year career come to an end Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Italian qualifier Silvia Farina in the first round of the $520,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Novotna, last year's Wimbledon champion, had announced she would retire at the end of the year following her third-round loss at the U.S. Open. But a first-round loss to Magdalena Maleeva at the Seat Open at Luxembourg two weeks ago made the 31-year-old cancel the rest of her appearances, except this one. "I feel very fortunate that this sport has given me so much," Novotna said in Luxembourg. "When I look back on my career, winning a Grand Slam was the biggest goal for me and when I finally fulfilled that last year, it was a dream come true. I have no definite plans yet as to what I will do after my career I will stay in tennis in some form or another."
Extractions: Flushing Meadows, New York September 3, 1997 L. DAVENPORT/J. Novotna An interview with: JANA NOVOTNA Q. How difficult were the playing conditions? We saw some very erratic tennis from both ends. JANA NOVOTNA: Well, absolutely. It was really difficult. This morning when I was warming up, I knew that it's going to be really hard because it was really windy. Basically the wind was coming from one side of the court. So you felt like when you were on the other end, against the wind, it would be really difficult to return or to win the games. That's how it was, basically. It felt like on one side you couldn't win your serve, you couldn't break. On the other side, everything was coming really easily. But you know, there's other things you can't influence at all. You just have to go into the matches and you have to know that is something you have to deal with. Unfortunately, Lindsay was better in doing it today. Q. Do you really think she was better in doing it? Was it a hundred percent even match, when you have match points on either side? JANA NOVOTNA: Absolutely. I think it was a great match, especially the end of it. I definitely didn't start the match very well. I lost the first set very easily. I was able to find my game. Started to be a little more aggressive. You know, from then on, the match came to be really even. When I was down in the third set 1-4, battled a couple breakpoints there, I thought it was a fantastic comeback for me. Unfortunately, on the approach when I had match point, I mean, the wind just blew it away one inch beside the line. There's nothing you can do. I kept on fighting. It was a great match towards the end. Then, especially at the tiebreaker, I think we both played really good tennis. You know, at the end there is nothing to be really disappointed about.
Extractions: An interview with: JANA NOVOTNA Q. Looked like you ran out of gas in that second set. JANA NOVOTNA: Well, I think not only in the second set, I think that already in the beginning of the match I was going into the match not feeling really 100%. Obviously I was very tired from playing night matches and a lot of tennis this week simply. That simply is impossible to play Steffi if I am at a stage like that. With her you have to be 100% sharp and extremely quick around the court because she will just keep on hitting hard and run you from one corner to another. So it has been awhile since I played her so it was good to play her just before the Open just in case we have to play each other again so I am prepared. Q. Are you okay other than just being tired, are you otherwise all right? JANA NOVOTNA: Yes. Do I look so bad? (Laughs) (laughter). Q. There was a streak there where you lost 16 of 18 points. I don't think I have ever seen you do that against anyone. JANA NOVOTNA: I think I cannot give you any different answer than I did already the first one I think, as I said, Steffi was on top of her game. She was playing extremely well against Davenport last night. I could see she was running Lindsay from one side to the other. Obviously that gave her a lot of confidence going into the finals and and she is rested. She has been training very hard so, she is obviously prepared. That is about it.
