Extractions: Comment: I sprinted to the bookstore the day this book was released and snatched up the last copy. And, by and large, I wasn't at all disappointed. It's beautifully done, with style and originality. Tons of great pictures of Oksana, and she writes in a pleasant, simple manner. But I get the feeling that she just wasn't ready to truly share herself at the time, which makes sense, considering when she wrote it. The only other problem is that in light of the changes in her life since this book was done, it seems to focus on a very short period of time in Oksana's life. Nonetheless, Oksana is a remarkable, beautiful, incredibly talented young woman, and I wish her all the best in the world. I have a feeling that if things continue as they are now, the next book she does, if she does one, will be a lot more intimate.

(Oct 15, 1998 - 19:38 EDT) Olympic gold medalist Oksana Baiul has returned to skating and hopes to eventually regain her amateur status and compete in the 2002 Olympics. In her first meeting with reporters in eight months, including three spent in an alcoholic rehabilitation program in Connecticut, Baiul said: "I really wanted to go back into amateur status. My dream, my goal for the future is Salt Lake City in 2002." University of Delaware skating director and former Olympian Ron Ludington told Reuters he thinks changes in the regulations of the International Skating Union will allow Baiul to regain her amateur eligibility. "In the near future, before year-end, we expect approval by the ISU. They're still working on it," Ludington said. Baiul has grown four inches to 5-foot-5 since 1994 when, as a 95-pound, 16-year-old waif, she was the darling of the Winter Games in Lillehammer. In January 1997, Baiul was charged with drunk-driving after she ran her Mercedes-Benz off a Connecticut road and crashed at 97 mph. Last month her probation ended and charges were dismissed.

Extractions: Gr. 4^-6. Preteens who love figure skating will enjoy Oksana's story of how she came to win the Olympic gold medal in 1994. She provides very little information on her life now, concentrating instead on her early years, the death of her mother, and her training for the Olympics. Large full-color and black-and-white photographs document a childhood spent on skates, with more recent photos presenting a very Americanized, more glamorous Oksana. Readers who remember the 1994 Olympics and the TV profiles of Oksana won't find much that is new here, but this profile is pleasantly written, and Oksana's account of her medal-winning performance makes interesting reading. Chris Sherman While coping with the deaths of her mother and grandparents, Baiul pursued her dream of becoming a reat skaterin Ukraine. The hard work this sport demands comes across in spite of Baiul's bubbly accounts of her performances at competitions. The text doesn't offer much depth, but this gliding-over-the-surface treatment will interest fans and anyone looking to relive her gold-medal performance at the 1994 Olympics. Glossy color photos and exclamation points abound. Book Description

Extractions: DANCE REVIEW By Garry Maskaly and Karlene Rosera associate photo editors Each performance had a unique feeling. Some skaters interacted with the audience, while others enriched their acts with emotion, making them much more than a series of jumps and spins. Three-time World Champion silver medalist Surya Bonaly executed her world-famous back flip and other complicated jumps with perfect timing and perfection. She enlivened the crowd with her upbeat performance and her never-fading smile. Olympic gold medalist Oksana Baiul, on the other hand, gave an artistic and emotional performance. At one point, her expression conveyed pain as she contorted on the ice. She rarely smiled throughout the performance, never dropping the emotional facade that was quintessential to her act. Even while completing remarkable jumps, she never allowed herself to smile. Other crowd pleasers included the sword-toting Philippe Candeloro, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, who astounded the audience with a fencing routine on the ice. He later discarded his sword to do a difficult series of jumps, finishing the performance to great acclaim. Maya Usova and Evgeny Platov conveyed unparalleled emotion as they completed their dance routine. Having been paired for only a year, they recently secured a World Championship title. This would come as no surprise to the Fleet Center audience who was mesmerized by their fluid routine. Seeing the performers enjoy their skating without competitive pressure made the show an even greater treat.

Extractions: search tips sitemap Extras News ... History Oksana Baiul O Oksana Baiul The life of the little girl was not so sweet. When Oksana was ten years old, her grandfather died, very unexpectedly. One year later her grandmother became very sick and died. Her life changed because a big part of her family was missing. In 1994 Oksana went to European Championships and won silver medal again. The most important time was coming up. It was the 1994 Olympic Winter Games. She began preparing herself for the most important competition in her life. Oksana had chosen a great piece of music, Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, for the short program. The time came for Olympic Games. Oksana skated the short program perfectly, but she was in the second place. It was a good spot... She had to get better scores from judges on the long program to win but she could not afford a single mistake. Everything seemed like it was going to be fine, but problems started to pop up. When Oksana was practicing for her final performance, Tanya Szewchenko from Germany and Oksana crashed into each other. Oksana had a deep cut in her leg and back pain. With the injury she had it was impossible to skate for the next few days. But the dream didn't end. Nothing could come between Oksana Baiul and the chance of winning the gold medal. When the time came to get ready to skate again, Oksana was given an Olympic-approved shot for pain. And on that day, Oksana became an Olympic Champion at the age of 16. Her dream came true.
