Extractions: Some might say there's a gulf between teenage violinist Vanessa-Mae 's classical and pop music careers, but it's one she appears to bridge with little effort and to great success. At just 18 she has already achieved the kind of credibility at both ends of the musical spectrum that some musicians strive for all their lives. And although her second pop recording, Storm , has been three years in coming due to her classical commitments, EMI Records Group UK Ireland Jean-Francois Cecillon has no doubt that it will be well received.

Extractions: Ananova: Nigel Kennedy and Vanessa Mae inspiring musical children Violinist Nigel Kennedy is the biggest musical influence on schoolchildren wanting to learn to play instruments. A survey found stars such as Vanessa Mae and The Corrs are also helping to make the violin trendy. Classic FM Magazine polled 1,000 parents to find which artists are inspiring children to take up music. Singer Charlotte Church and pianist Jools Holland are also seen as inspirations to youngsters. The survey followed a three-month campaign aimed at encouraging youngsters to learn to play a musical instrument, the Daily Express reports. The piano proved most popular, followed by the recorder, violin, flute and clarinet - but the selections were more likely to reflect the limited choice offered by schools rather than outside influences, the survey found. Classic FM editor John Evans said: "A guitar might look fashionable, but artists such as Kennedy, Vanessa Mae and The Corrs are inspiring a new generation." Extractions: document.write(dateText); News Headlines Homepage Commentary Funny Money Site Search: By Country By Industry Vanessa May help Goldman in Singapore By Steven Irvine 09 August 2001 Gorgeous Pop-violinist Vanessa Mae will be the star attraction at Goldman's tech conference next month With Goldman Sachs's fortunes at a low ebb in Singapore thanks to the DBS fiasco, the firm may be hoping to strike a chord with the authorities in a musical sense, if no other. That's because it has hired Singapore-born violin-babe, Vanessa Mae to play at its tech conference next month. The tech conference will take place between the 17 th and 19 th of September, and Mae will play at the outdoor gala party which will be held on the roof of Ocean Terminal on Hong Kong's Kowloon-side. Mae, who first came to prominence playing Bach waste-deep in water on a tropical beach at the age of 16, is one of Singapore's most famous daughters, and has now released several platinum albums. Her latest album 'Subject to Change' involves the violinist playing lively pop-fusion and also, for the first time singing. She is sure to be the highlight of the tech conference, given how downbeat the markets are right now.
Extractions: I had never heard of Vanessa-Mae until I one day back in in 1995. At the time, she was a sixteen year old who had just released her first "pop" album "The Violin Player". By this time, she was already a well-known concert violinist who had three classical recordings to her credit. Vanessa-Mae was suffering from some bad publicity. It seemed that the classical music community in England of which she'd been a part for almost half her life was now snubbing her because of the "low brow" recordings on "The Violin Player". After hearing about her and listening to her recording of "Warm Air", one of her cuts off of the CD "The Violin Player," I knew I had to have this CD. The music was so relaxing. I had wonderful visions of resting in a hot bubble bath with this beautiful music swirling around my head. Besides, if the artist had upset the British THAT much, she MUST be worth hearing!

Clive: My next guest is, well, she's very like me, except that she's young, talented, beauitiful and a brilliant musician. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome.. Vanessa-Mae! Vanessa bounds on stage, and sits down at the desk. The audience are ecstatic I Guess from the crowds reaction that everybody knows who you are, but in case anyone doesn't, you're this brilliant prodigy violinist, and you've been a brilliant musician since, well, since you were born? Vanessa: No, basically I started when I was four on the piano and five on the violin but for anyone who doesn't know me, I'd describe myself in a few words as The Violin Player: Vanessa-Mae. Clive: But you didn't start off playing the violin, you started out as a brilliant pianist. Vanessa: No!, That's right! It's very kind of you to say so, I started out on the piano at the age of four, and when I was five I started the violin. Clive: So why did you put away the piano? Because the violin's easier to get under your chin?

I've now put these entries into a rough order, most recent to earliest. Note that I can't be sure of the order of entries if I'm not sure on the date (the late '95 entries, for example) A neutral (for once) article about the classical tour. Pictures from the Reading Hexagon. Some information about next pop album. Date: 2/11/97 An interview just after release of the "Storm" album. It's actually quite good. An interview with Cathy Secker, and an opportunity to see most of the video for I'm a doun for lack o'Johnny, although they irritatingly put the credits on during it! Heads will roll... a fairly good appearance on a show which usually has an abnormally large number of sheep on it. From the title, you can guess it's only a regional programme, so while the rest of the country had to endure Seaquest, we had VM. Best reason yet for living up North.. :-) Electric Circus: Length; 3 minutes. Date; 19th Oct '96

Extractions: Her fusion style and success outraged die-hard traditionalists in the classical world but they couldnt argue with her playing abilities. Described, at 10, by the director of the Royal College of Music as "like Mozart and Mendelssohn before her, a true prodigy", her violin teacher, Professor Felix Andrievsky, revealed "I was jealous to see how easily she plays the most difficult things she looks as though she was born with the violin". Her friend and mentor Vasko Vassilev, concert master of the Royal Opera House Orchestra, believes "you have to go back to Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin and Fritz Kreisler to find a young violinist with her spirituality." Today, after a roller-coaster ride to 23 and a professional musician for 13 of those years Vanessa is an independent woman, carving out a new career with her own music, and happy to have moved on from the child prodigy. "Many things about me have changed," she admits, "but something that will always remain is my determination to play music that satisfies me, and never to be restricted by categories imposed arbitrarily from outside. I have continued to play, and will always love, classical music it is my heritage. But I will always want to experiment, to discover new musical experiences. This is just the beginning, I can promise you!"
