Extractions: By Jonathan Lee Maroon-News Staff At 3:30 p.m. this Sunday, Professor of Music Marietta Cheng will lead the Colgate University Orchestra in its second concert of the fall season. The free concert, which will be held in the Chapel, should prove to be a star-studded offering, as the Orchestra will be joined by internationally renowned violinist Scott St. John and accompanied by the narration of Chairman of the Board of Trustees Wm. Brian Little '64. The Orchestra will open its program with Charles Ives's Variations on "America." Ives, one of the first American composers to draw his principle inspiration from the music of his homeland, composed this work for organ at the age of 17. He gave its premier performance in New York at the Brewster Methodist Church on February 17, 1892. Described in the program notes for Sunday's concert as "perhaps the most important [composition] of Ives's pre-Yale years," this work consists of five variations on the familiar tune, separated by two bitonal interludes. These bitonal sections stand as testaments to Ives's respect for the music of his father, who was, according to Frank Rossiter, "a restless experimenter who was interested in all kinds of sounds." In the 1950s and 60s, Ives's music experienced a renaissance among the musical community. During this period, William Schuman, one of America's better-known composers of the late twentieth century, became interested in

It was my pleasure well over a decade ago to assist Silverstein for a concert in New Yorks Carnegie Hall where he fashioned together some impressive readings of Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff with 100 young musicians who had been brought together just for the occasion! Ill never forget learning from the violin master how to execute hairpin dynamics by varying the speed of the bow rather than just exerting pressure on the string. For Sundays broadcast I was far from my usual Acoustic Research speakers, within miles of the Papal mass but safely out of the mud and rain. So what better work than Schuberts Rosamunde to coax the sun back into the sky very nearly at the same instant as the dark, leisurely introduction threw off its Masonic minor mode - eager to establish the only major tonality that requires neither flats nor sharps.

Bicentennial of Beethoven Opus 47 Beethoven's Sonata Mulattica for violin and piano was premiered in Vienna on 24 May 1803. Ludwig himself was at the keyboard and George Bridgetower, violinist, performed with him. Aside from the fact that this sonata is one of the landmarks of the classical repertoire the details surrounding the collaboration of the two provide a fascinating look at Europe in the late 1700's. Bridgetower not only performed the work but was in fact the one who commissioned it from Beethoven. That a black violinist was not only touring Europe successfully, but commissioning the foremost composer of the day for material paints an unexpected picture of the period. Clearly the racial bias and cultural hegemony of the 20th century had not yet infected the thinking of 18th century Europe. more Adam Romer to tour East Timor in 2003 Violinist/violist Adam Romer and violinist Miki Takahashi embark on a ten day concert tour of East Timor in January 2003.
