What the notes don't do is offer any background on the music on Devil's Dance , or offer a shred of information about violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Jonathan Feldman. There are 13 pieces, mostly arrangements of well known romantic classical works with satanic and/or supernatural associations. The first two tracks are different. The opening 'Devil's Dance' is arranged as a duet for violin and piano by John Williams from his own score for the 1987 film
Extractions: This beautiful disc should win quite a few admirers - both for the music and for the soloist, Gil Shaham. Shaham is probably the finest violinist of his generation, the natural heir to Perlman, and the only violinist of the Dorothy Delay school of violin teaching who has anything remotely like an individual sound, blessed as he is with the ability to spin a bel canto line of pure soul-searching sound. Either live on the stage, or recorded on disc, a Shaham concert is high quality - and his sound is both instantly identifiable and instantly unforgettable. At one stage during the Waltonian slow movement of the Violin Concerto he produces a pianissimo of such breathtaking clarity and beauty it is literally heart-stopping. The excerpts from Schindler's List put his sound into perspective: the three pieces have an elegance and tonal refinement that is utterly compelling to hear (and the recording he is given is simply sumptuous). Yet, whilst superficially beautiful they are also as moving as Perlman's were for the original soundtrack, even if Shaham does not surpass Perlman's own recording of them. Perlman is simply elemental in a way unlikely to be surpassed born, as it were, to play this music.

The performance is part of the 1997-98 Celebrity Series, sponsored by the UA School of Music, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Gloria Narramore Moody Foundation. At age 26, Shaham is praised by music critics and leaders of the world's celebrated symphonic ensembles as a veteran virtuoso of the instrument. A Chicago Tribune music critic, after experiencing a Shaham performance wrote, "He seems poised to become the Itzhak Perlman of his generation. There is in Shaham that same facility for reaching out in a very personal and immediate way to an audience through whatever music he happens to be playing." Another reviewer exuded, "With limitless technical resources, he tosses off the most difficult passages as if they were child's play. Few if any living violinists are as comfortable as Shaham in such a broad spectrum of repertoire."
