Extractions: The Seiler Strings Chamber Orchestra was founded by violinist Mayumi Seiler to perform gems of the vast string orchestra repertoire. The ensemble performs without a conductor and is led from the front desk by Ms. Seiler. The 15 member core orchestra boasts some of Torontos top professional musicians and the best young talent in a group that played to critical acclaim in its inaugural season. The Globe and Mail has hailed this "elite band of string players", and referred to it as "warm, focussed, and very much in tune", while the Toronto Star lauded its "ebullience"and "glowing tone". Few string orchestras can boast the variety of styles and repertoire that the Seiler Strings play. Each piece and every performance reflects the attention to detail and commitment that is unique to this group. They have quickly been recognized as a dynamic and virtuosic string orchestra that is comfortable in any repertoire. 2003-4 WEST TOUR SOLOIST BENJAMIN BUTTERFIELD, Tenor Admired for his enthusiastic approach to music making and his compelling musicianship, Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield has enchanted audiences on both the concert and operatic stages of the world. In 2002-2003 Mr. Butterfield returns to Toulouse to sing Figaro in The Barber of Seville and Messiah with the Philharmonic Baroque and the Toronto Symphony. He will sing Nanki-poo (Mikado) with the Edmonton Opera, and Tamino (Magic Flute) at L'Opera de Montreal. Orchestral highlights include The Seasons with the Orchestre Metropolitan Montreal, Bach B Minor Mass with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Bach Cantatas with the Bethlehem Bach Festival and a recital with the Aldeburgh Foundation.

Mayumi Seiler Reviews Isserlis was joined in this Via Salzburg recital by violinist mayumi seiler in MauriceRavel's alternately aggressive and voluptuous Duo For Violin And Cello. http://www.mayumiseiler.com/review/review1.html
Extractions: The Seiler Strings Chamber Orchestra, house band of the Via Salzburg concert series, is another of those small, savvy, vital Toronto ensembles like Tafelmusik, Amici, the Toronto Consort and Opera in Concert who take the trouble to discover their particular audiences and have figured out how to tempt and engage them. They perform with passion and dedication and tend to sell out. Quarrington in turn captivated the capacity audience with two works by Giovanni Bottesini, the acknowledged perhaps the only master among 19th-century composers devoted to the largest and lowest-voiced member of the violin family. Bottesini made the double bass jump, as no one before him had done. His music was pretty good, too, but it was its Paganinian high-wire display that gave it celebrity, and we only hear it when an individual bass player has the skill and wit to bring it off. Not many have, but Quarrington has. He first made a touching communication of Bottesini's Elegy. Then, matched move-for-move by his duo partner, violinist Seiler, and animated by an instinctive and exuberant hilarity, he made a proper joy ride of the same composer's Grand Duo.

Mayumi Seiler 1999/2000 Concert Schedule Japanese sensation, pianist Ikuyo Nakamichi, and violinist mayumi seiler join forces in a collaboration spanning three http://www.mayumiseiler.com/concerts/concerts99.html
Extractions: Besides being the birthplace of Mozart, a renowned cultural capital, and a city of beauty, Salzburg is the city that shaped my musical influences. Though I was born in Japan, I was steeped in the musical culture of Salzburg throughout my childhood and student years. So, like me, this series comes to Toronto via Salzburg. I hope you enjoy being part of this wonderful music. Canada's premier horn player James Sommerville, Japanese sensation, pianist Ikuyo Nakamichi, and violinist Mayumi Seiler join forces in a collaboration spanning three continents. Mr. Sommerville, recently appointed Principal Horn with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, has recently won a Juno award. Just prior to her appearance at Glenn Gould Studio, Ms. Nakamichi will perform as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the baton of Pinchas Zuckerman. The programme here includes Beethoven's Horn Sonata op. 17, Brahm's Violin Sonata op.108, and Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses for Piano. The centrepiece of the concert will be one of the most beautiful works in the chamber music repertoire, Brahm's Trio op. 40 for Horn, Violin and Piano.

Extractions: Violinist and Via Salzburg artistic director, Mayumi Seiler, who moved to Toronto only three years ago, combines an international performing career, teaching at the RCM and at the U of T Faculty of Music, and raising a young family. One of four siblings, all of whom are now professional string players, her introduction to Toronto audiences was sudden: a request at 5:30 one afternoon to perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the TSO that same evening!. Mayumi Seiler Her new chamber music series, Via Salzburg (referring to the city where she lived from the age of six), will bring together local musicians and musicians from abroad. The first concert in the series, October 22, is the Smithsonian Institutions distinguished Axelrod Quartet, of which Ms. Seiler, along with Toronto violist, Steven Dann, is a member. The quartet will play the Smithsonians priceless decorated Stradivarius instruments, which give the quartet a unique, rich sonority. These instruments, on which the A and E strings are gut, produce a pure sound with a deep core. Subscribers to the series are invited to purchase tickets to a post concert gala reception at which these rare and remarkable instruments will be on display. Via Salzburg's third and fourth concerts will feature a 15-member chamber orchestra, a hand-picked combination of top ranking experienced players, such as Joel Quarrington, Marie Bérard and Brian Epperson and young professionals. This should offer an intriguing contrast with Sinfonia Toronto (see our cover story, page 12) in that Via Salzburg's chamber ensemble will be led from the first desk by Mayumi Seiler. "Whats special about this orchestra" Seiler commented, "is that it will play without a conductor," which, she added, demands an even higher level of attentiveness to the ensemble than is usually required.
