Events Guest artists will include aaron rosandviolinist , Earl Wild-pianist , BernardGreenhouse-cellist , the Emerson String Quartet , and five of Oscar Shumsky's http://www.shumskymusic.com/Events.html
Extractions: American violinist Oscar Shumsky will be honored in a concert in New York's Town Hall on December 16, 2001, at 3:00pm. Eric Shumsky, (son of the late, great violinist) will appear as violist and conductor and will host the event. Guest artists will include Aaron Rosand-violinist Earl Wild-pianist Bernard Greenhouse-cellist the Emerson String Quartet , and five of Oscar Shumsky's former pupils. Composers represented on this program will be Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Grieg, Bach, Schubert, Vivaldi, Rachmaninov and Mozart. Oscar Shumsky was a musician's musician, a great violin and viola virtuoso, and an excellent conductor who and worked with many orchestras. Less widely known was his extraordinary ability in the field of photography. Though this multitalented artist had remarkable success as a child prodigy (at the age of 7, he was the youngest soloist ever to appear with the Philadelphia Orchestra), his career did not flourish partly due to his unwillingness to travel, and his disinterest in marketing. He was an artist and not a careerist! It is interesting to note, that however, much later in his life while he was in his late sixties, Shumsky staged a major comeback as a soloist causing a sensation in European music circles. His great contributions to the music world deserve to be shared with all music-lovers and musicians. This Oscar Shumsky tribute concert will be presented by the Shumsky Foundation, a nonprofit organization established to preserve the recorded legacies of great musicians of our past and to promote the remarkable artistic achievements these musicians have contributed to our culture. The organization will also provide resources in career development for classical musicians, offer concerts to the public, and establish educational workshops by living masters.

Extractions: Firstly, Aaron Rosand is rivaled by a mere few regarding virtuosity. Having said that, this disc is simply an expressive compilation of technical showmanship rather than musical enlightenment. Glissando! For the sake of all that is pure and Holy. Cat fights have no place in the repertoire of any violinist! Excessive vibrato, rubato and other "tricks of the trade" pervade this disc like locusts descending on the crops of the Heartland. Mr. Rosand knows (and has demonstrated through numerous recordings) the sweetness and emotional content of the instrument better than most. Only he will ever know why he recorded the disturbing content of the disc.

Extractions: About Sidney Stafford by Erwin Fishman Ruth got us started, but it has been Sidney Stafford who has kept us going. He has been moving ahead since, at age 15, he moved from his birthplace of Joliet, Illinois, to Kenilworth on Chicago's North Shore. After high school graduation, Sidney attended Sherwood Music School in Chicago, where he had some wonderful piano and music instruction. Then he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and served as an infantryman until 1945. Sidney saw action on New Guinea at the Nassau Bay-Salamaua campaign (for which his unit received a Presidential Citation) and Hollandia followed by Biak Island, Dutch New Guinea, and then in the south and central Philippine Islands. Sidney's brother Ernie also served in the South Pacific and the two brothers managed to visit each other on three occasions: once in Lae, New Guinea, once in Zamboanga, Mindanao, and once on the island of Leyte. When Sidney's military career ended, he returned to Chicago and attended the Chicago Musical College, with the blessings of the GI Bill. He was a student of the great Swiss pianist, Rudolph Ganz and, for chamber music, of violinist Paul Stassevitch. It was at the Chicago Musical College that he began his associations with Sidney Weiss and with the famous violinist Aaron Rosand, who had graduated from Curtis and was living in his hometown of Chicago. Sidney's professional career actually started back in 1937 when he accompanied a group of opera singers on tour. However, he went "big time" in 1948, leaving school and joining national tours. That year he accompanied Aaron Rosand and cellist Raya Garbousova.
