Rob was cited for his "steadfast pursuit of excellence in education and for encouraging family medicine residents to surpass their goals." FORTIES In that 55-year lapse, a tiny campus had "exploded" from five buildings into a modern, technologically advanced school. Ronald, accompanied by his wife, Doris 47, didnt recognize anyone or anything. That is, until he sat down at the Class of 44 dinner. From that point on, the dinner quickly became a humourous jaunt down memory lane. As it turns out, Ronald, who held the University record in the 100-metre dash for 11 years, once took Valene on a date to a Hamilton Tiger-Cat football game during their undergraduate years. "I invited her to that football game and it cost only 75 cents each to get in," Ronald remembers. "Imagine that today."

(Tracey Schramm) Australias contemporary arts are as unique and diverse as the society and continent they come from. They reflect an ancient landscape that is home to both the worlds oldest continuous cultural traditions and also to a rich mix of migrant cultures. Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists alike respond to the imaginative challenges Australia presents in diverse ways and have developed new modes of expression that have brought Australias art and culture to international attention. All forms of the performing arts, including music, theatre and dance, have strong followings in Australia and have reached new levels of sophistication and excellence in recent years. Australia has produced many outstanding poets and novelists, making its literature one of the most vital branches of contemporary writing in English. For the last quarter of a century, Australian feature films have enjoyed remarkable success, both in terms of popular as well as critical acclaim.

October and November Also during 1998, a dedication to the Old Sea Wall was made by the Rev Michael H Ellemor. February 1998 Allan will speak on the history of fire services in Inverloch. Last month Frank Eeles spoke on his earliest memories of the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine. Many of the names used in mining came from the Welsh mining influence i.e. "plat", "Skiffe", "plod". The coal seams were 3 to 4 feet 6 inches thick and in places narrowed to 18 inches. In 1937, at Number 20 Shaft, methane gas ignited and killed 18 miners - this was Wonthaggis worst mining disaster. Diesel fuel and natural gas spelt the end of mining at Wonthaggi which had operated from 1909 to 1968. Some of the Inverloch mine workers Frank mentioned were: Horrocks, Dicker, Sneddon, Harrison, Wangman and Hazeldean. Pay for 88 hours was £1.11.6 and 2/6 was deducted from all wages for the hospital fund. This covered free hospitalisation, medical care, pharmacy and dental treatment. A welcome was extended to new member, Joanna Lansdale.
