Extractions: Published February 24 - March 1, 2000 BY GAVIN BORCHERT CHECK OUT HELMUT Newton's portrait of German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter in the February 7 issue of The New Yorker . To her familiar Breck Girl-cum-Valkyrie persona he's added, by way of deep shadows and an urban setting, a dash of Sophia Loren. Mutter, who appears with pianist Lambert Orkis in the Seattle Symphony's Distinguished Artist recital series this Sunday, has capitalized on her photogenic appeal so unapologetically throughout her career that she makes it all appear completely unselfconscious. It's as though she dares you to criticize her for it. Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter Benaroya Hall, Sunday, February 27 Mutter's most renowned, however, for a repertory decidedly low on marketable glamour. Very few classical megastars have done more for contemporary music than she. Not that she has much competition in the violin world: Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, despite her bad-girl image, has never to my knowledge been so iconoclastic as to actually commission or premiere anything. Her most celebrated peersMidori, Joshua Bell, Gil Shahamhave also made their names and fortunes entirely off the standard repertory, thank you very much. But Mutter has collaborated with some of the most esoteric European composers Penderecki, Lutoslawski, Wolfgang Rihmon works written just for her. She recently swept through New York City with a series of orchestral appearances and solo recitals comprised of almost entirely 20th-century works. She'll bring a similar program to Benaroya, including Anton Webern's

Extractions: Anne-Sophie Mutter was born in Rheinfelden in Baden. Her international career began in 1977 when she appeared as a soloist with Herbert von Karajan at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. Her Berlin debut - again with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic - followed a year later. Since then 'the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin' - as Karajan called her - has scored triumph upon triumph in all the world's leading concert halls. Equally in demand as a soloist and as a chamber musician, Mutter regularly performs in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan. She made her Russian debut in 1985; in 1988 she undertook an extended recital tour of Canada and the USA. The Anne-Sophie Mutter Festival - a unique event staged in London and Stuttgart in 1990 - demonstrated her artistry in a repertory that extended from the Baroque to the avant-garde. Mutter also performs regularly at the Salzburg Festival and other international events.

Extractions: CONCERT REVIEW By Andrew Wong Staff writer FleetBoston Celebrity Series: Joshua Bell Symphony Hall November 11, 2001 Four Seasons was cancelled abruptly after a New York concert. The scheduled tour resumed, however, with a gracious save by violinist Joshua Bell. On November 11, Bell and the Trondheim Soloists performed a slightly altered program. Zwei nordische Weisen . This is only fitting, as Trondheim has recorded every piece for strings written by Grieg, including an arrangement of the String Quartet No. 1 Sarek Orawa Sonata No. 3 Ballade . From the grandiose opening to the most complex chordal passages, his supple bow arm and silky tone made this daunting solo sonata seem easy. The second half of the program, Overall, Bell delivered a satisfactory reading of the piece, although at times the odd combination between the American virtuoso and a Nordic string ensemble was blatantly apparent. Bell twisted and turned to direct his fellow musicians, at times almost thrusting his body into the cello section. His stage manner amplified his climactic solos, but also drew attention away from finer details of his playing and obscured his connection with the ensemble. Extractions: "The greatest youthful talent since Yehudi Menuhin." "A violinist who sets new standards of performance." The publicity comments were predictable, but the authors were not: Herbert von Karajan and Mstislav Rostropovich. Anne-Sophie Mutter, the talent under discussion, who made her Carnegie Hall recital debut at the end of 1988, is far from a predictable phenomenon. A concert violinist who began her collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and its conductor, Karajan, at fourteen, she is perhaps best known to the American public from posters showing her performing in a strapless Dior gown, her long blond hair loose about her bare shoulders. To managers, she's known as a talent who can fill any hall. To her musical colleagues and critics, she is already one of the great masters of the instrument. Mutter was born in a small town in southwest Germany in 1963, and began piano lessons at the age of five. Soon she switched to the violin, and her parents enrolled her in the Winterthur Conservatory in Switzerland. By the time she was seven, Mutter had won the highest acclaim ever given in a nationwide youth competition. On the same occasion, she and her brother Christoph shared a prize in the piano four-hands

Extractions: Ms. Mutter started playing the violin at the age of 5, and have since been associated with tutors such as Erna Honigberger and Aida Stucki, a pupil of Carl Flesch. She soon enjoyed considerable success in several competitions, and notably the Lucern Festival in 1976. This drew the attention of Maestro Karajan and she auditioned for him in Berlin shortly after, at the age of 13. Since her highly acclaimed Berlin debut with Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1978, her live performances as well as her recordings have attracted quite some attention and praise. After some years of focusing mainly on the canonized works of the german central repertoire; from the concertos of Bach through Mozart and Beethoven, to the concertos of the great romantics, Anne-Sophie Mutter has increasingly turned her attention to contemporary music, ranging from Strawinsky, Berg and Bartók to more recent composers such as Witold Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Norbert Moret and Wolfgang Rihm.
