Duff Berg Bows, Inc. was honored and very happy to exhibit six of our finest cello bows, crafted especially for the occasion, at the Indiana University Musical Arts Center during Maestro Janos Starker's 75th Birthday Celebration. Unlike other exhibitors, traveling to the "MAC" was not a problem since our studio is only one and one half mile from campus. To begin with, we are very gratified to be able to say that Mr. Starker has endorsed the Berg cello bows, having critiqued many. He has praised the great improvement in their performance quality over the years. This is in part due to following his advice on aspects important to him as a virtuoso, and mathematical studies on the design of the stick.

A group of more than 20 members of Kappa Kappa Gamma lined the second row of the Dixie Chicks concert wearing black shirts adorned with sequins spelling "Kappa Chicks" across their chests. Kacy Gillogly, junior in advertising, was one of four sorority sisters who camped near Bramlage for the tickets. She said after the four found out they were not allowed to camp near the coliseum doors, they found a spot close to the parking lot to spend the night. Thirty days later, a crowd of all ages filled the coliseum to hear the Grammy award-winning trio. Vida, a Tex-Mex band from San Antonio, served as the opening act for the 7:30 p.m. concert. The artists were in Manhattan as part of their 38-state MusicCountry.com-sponsored tour.

"We were thrilled by the number of players who joined the celebration, as well as the publicists, writers, and venue managers who help us daily in our coverage of string music. And we couldn't have done it without the wonderful staff of Machold Rare Violins on Broadway, who provided the beautiful location and helped make sure everything ran smoothly. The Durango Herald - Bernard Rubenstein Review The final concert was no exception. The cornerstone and highlight wasthe performance by 21year-old violinist stefan milenkovich. http://www.webtek.com/rubenstein/durango.htm
Extractions: Special to the Herald Tuesday, April 28, 1998 The San Juan Symphony Orchestra concluded its first season under the direction of Maestro Bernard Rubenstein with an exhilarating concert Sunday afternoon. This has been one of the best seasons in recent memory with Maestro Bernard Rubenstein programming a variety of music which the orchestra has played very well while also introducing new artists to the Durango community. The final concert was no exception. The cornerstone and highlight was the performance by 21-year-old violinist Stefan Milenkovich. Having made his New York debut less than two weeks ago, this dynamic young artist performed with the maturity and charisma of a seasoned artist. Milenkovich performed the "Concerto for Violin No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22" by the noted Polish composer Henryk (Henri) Wieniawski. The concerto is a minor masterpiece, full of romantic sweep and emphatic expression. Milenkovich played with expressive lyricism displaying a full spectrum of dramatic dynamic contrasts. His technical virtuosity was in abundance and flawless throughout the piece but particularly impressive as he played the demanding finale movement, "allegro con fuoco." In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin, Milenkovich was featured playing "Prelude No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra," by the American composer. Originally composed for the renowned violinist Jascha Heifitz, "Prelude No. 2" is the embodiment of Gershwin's style in his serious works. The rhythms are dynamic, trenchant, and highly syncopated. Milenkovich captured the style and feeling of Gershwin with expertise, further demonstrating his musical adaptability and insight.

Extractions: Until Sunday night I thought I was going to have to spend the rest of my life mentioning only Ida Kavafian every time Ravel's Sonata in G Major came up. While Kavafian's performance of the work in the 1982 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis remains memorable, Stefan Milenkovich's interpretation now can be discussed in the same breath. The 18-year-old silver-medalist of last year's fourth quadrennial competition included the Ravel in his all-sonata benefit recital for the Indiana Scholarship Fund (four stars out of four) for the Aspen Music School in the DeHann Fine Arts Center. He opened and closed with solo worksin order, J.S. Bach's Second Sonata in A Minor and Eugene Ysaye's Ballade Sonata No. 3 . Between these, his mother, pianist Lidia Caenazzo, joined him for Ravel's G Major and, after intermission, the big Frank A Major Sonata Frankly, when it comes to the violin competitions [of Indianapolis], I'm a devout silver-medalist, preferring [Ida] Kavafian in the first one, Leonidas Kavakos in the second, Marco Rizzi in the third and Milenkovich in the fourth. Of these, the young Yugoslav-born Milenkovich is the most impressive. Some people have said he should stop studying with his father, who is not famous as a fiddler or teacher, and take up with an artist-teacher. Perhaps, but why fix what's not broken?
