LAS VEGAS RJ: NEON: Boy Wonder Boy Wonder. Acclaimed violinist stefan milenkovich closes Las VegasPhilharmonic's season. By KEN WHITE REVIEWJOURNAL. violinist stefan http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2002/May-03-Fri-2002/weekly/18637907.html
Extractions: Violinist Stefan Milenkovich returns to Las Vegas as the featured soloist for the Las Vegas Philharmonic's season finale Saturday night in Artemus Ham Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Milenkovich is no stranger to the Philharmonic. He has performed at two of the orchestra's soirees. "He just knocked everybody out," said Harold Weller, music director of the Philharmonic. "Instant standing ovation." Weller first heard of Milenkovich through friends in Flagstaff, Ariz., where Weller had been conductor. "They said, `You have to hire this kid for something.' He impressed us so much at the first soiree that we invited him back last year." Milenkovich will perform Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's romantic Violin Concerto "It's a real tour de force," Weller said at Saturday's concert. Milenkovich gained recognition by winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1997. He also received the silver medal at the 1994 Indianapolis Violin Competition when he was 17.
Extractions: Choosing a season's worth of music to perform isn't an easy task, says Las Vegas Philharmonic artistic director Harold Weller. "It's really a protracted and agonizing process to balance styles in a program and to find the best guest artist to appear," says Weller, who also conducts the orchestra in all but one of its programs this season. In February, the Philharmonic audience members were surveyed for their input. About 700 surveys were returned and "one suggestion was to play more from the classic period. So our March concert" with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann and Ludwig van Beethoven "is a direct result of that." Rosen won the 1977 International Naumburg Competition and the following year was the first American cellist to win the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky International Competition. He began studying the cello at 6 and at 13 began studying with famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.
